Not like you pictured it, eh choomba? Well, here's what they didn't tell you. On October 17, 1989, at 5:04pm, the earth split. They called it the Loma Prieta earthquake. Sixty-seven flatlined, almost 4,000 injured. What they didn't tell you is what it broke. The epicenter of that little shimmy was in a state park called Nisene Marks. A nice out-of-the-way place, not too far from Santa Cruz. Real convenient if you want to hide something. Not too convenient, though, if that something's kept in an earthquake-proof shelter built by the lowest bidder, and a 7.0 shaker comes rumbling through.
Whatever it was they had in that underground lab didn't take too kindly to being squashed like a bug. It tore a hole in things Einstein only theorized about, and only the best AI's would ever stand a chance of comprehending. They got a lucky break, though. No one even noticed. No one on your side of the split, anyway.
On this side, everything changed. Everything got a little darker. But there were only a few of us who really knew what happened - knew about the split - knew there was now two versions of history.
So that's the way it is, choomba. Yeah, this is reality, but not like yours. Everything's a little darker here. Get used to it. You're chipped in now.
