The journey back to Otari was tense but uneventful. The group moved swiftly, their senses heightened by the lingering unease from the chamber they had just left. Milo led the way, his keen eyes and ears alert for any signs of danger. The fens around them was eerily quiet, the usual sounds of wildlife conspicuously absent, adding to their sense of urgency.

Sable kept a close watch on Lys, whose wound, though healed, still seemed to cause him discomfort. She made a mental note to have it checked again once they reached Otari. Elspeth and Elowen walked side by side, their minds clearly occupied with the mysteries they had encountered. The strange light and the pool of blood weighed heavily on their thoughts.

As they approached the outskirts of Otari, the familiar sights and sounds of the town brought a sense of relief. The bustling market, the chatter of townsfolk, and the distant sound of the sea were a stark contrast to the oppressive atmosphere of the lighthouse. They made their way to Wrin’s shop, a small but well-kept building filled with curiosities and magical artifacts.

Wrin greeted them with a mixture of surprise and concern. “Back so soon? What did you find?” she asked, her eyes scanning their faces for any sign of trouble.

Sable stepped forward, recounting their encounter with the strange light and the pool of blood. She described the oppressive atmosphere and the sense of danger that had permeated the chamber. Milo chimed in with his observations about the blood and the trapdoor, while Elspeth and Elowen shared their thoughts on the possible magical nature of the light.

Wrin listened intently, her expression growing more serious with each passing moment. “This is troubling,” she said finally. “The light you describe sounds like a powerful magical phenomenon, one that could have dangerous implications if left unchecked. The blood is even more concerning. It suggests that something—or someone—has been there recently.”

She paused, considering their next move. “You were right to come back and inform me. We need to gather more information before we can act. I have some contacts who might be able to shed light on this situation. In the meantime, I suggest you rest and recover. You’ve done well to get this far. We shall reconvene in the morning.”

The group nodded, grateful for the chance to rest and regroup. They knew that their journey was far from over, but for now, they had taken an important step in uncovering the mysteries of the Gauntlight.

The next morning, the group reconvened at Wrin’s shop, the early light filtering through the windows and casting a warm glow over the room. Sable, Milo, and Elspeth arrived first, their expressions a mix of curiosity and anticipation. They noticed immediately that Lys and Elowen were absent, which only added to their sense of unease.

Wrin greeted them with a reassuring smile. “Good morning, everyone. I hope you managed to get some rest. I have some news and a couple of new faces to introduce.”

She gestured to two individuals standing nearby. “This is Isobela de Rhodes,” she said, indicating a tall, composed woman with sharp features and an air of quiet confidence. “Isobela is an adept and a true anatomist. Her knowledge of the human body and magical phenomena will be invaluable to us.”

Isobela nodded in greeting, her eyes keen and observant. “It’s a pleasure to meet you all. I’ve heard about your encounter with the strange light and the blood. I’m here to help in any way I can.”

Wrin then turned to the second newcomer, a man with a calm demeanor and a thoughtful expression. “And this is Larkin Oikeus. He’s a cleric, though not affiliated with any particular religion. His skills in healing and his broad knowledge of various magical practices will be a great asset.”

Larkin gave a small, respectful bow. “I’m looking forward to working with you. Wrin has briefed me on your situation, and I’m eager to assist.”

Sable couldn’t help but glance around the room, noting the absence of Lys and Elowen. “Where are Lys and Elowen?” she asked, a hint of concern in her voice.

Wrin’s expression grew serious. “I’ve sent them to the libraries in Absalom. We need more information about the phenomena you encountered, and the libraries there are some of the most extensive in the world. They should be able to find something that can help us understand what we’re dealing with.”

Milo nodded, though he couldn’t hide his worry. “I hope they find what we need. That light… it felt wrong.”

Isobela stepped forward, her voice calm and reassuring. “We’ll do everything we can to get to the bottom of this. With the information Lys and Elowen gather, and the skills we have here, I’m confident we can find a solution.”

Larkin added, “And in the meantime, we’ll continue our investigation here. We need to be prepared for whatever we might face.”

Wrin nodded in agreement. “Exactly. Let’s regroup and plan our next steps. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but I believe we can handle it together.”

Isobela's heart skipped a beat as Wrin introduced her as a True Anatomist, but calmed once she realized that she'd actually been introduced as a true anatomist - as in, an actual anatomist, and not a reference to the society she was part of. As the panic passed she regained her composure and stepped forward.

"I wish we could meet under less dire circumstances. Larkin and I have just arrived from Absalom and, while he grew up in Otari, it is my first time here, though I will do what I can to help protect your home." She placed two fingers over her heart; the universal sign of the healer's oath. She meant it, too, though she had her own reasons for seeking out the Gauntlight ruins; what luck that there was already a need for help in exploring them here and she hadn't needed to hire adventurers, herself, to accompany her into them.

"Wrin has briefed us on your findings, but I'd love to hear your take on the situation. What have you found, and how can we help?"

Sable frowned. She hadn’t expected Lys to leave without a word to her.

“Lys... left?” she asked, staring at Wrin in disbelief. “Without saying anything? To me?”

Her tone betrayed more surprise than she intended. Lys and she had been through so many things together. She would have expected at least a "goodbye" before he slipped away to Absalom. She let out a quiet sigh. Perhaps he thought it was for the best - get the information and return quickly. Or maybe… he didn’t feel the need to say anything.

Sable sighed again and shook her head, forcing herself to refocus. She nodded, greeting the newcomers. “I’m glad to meet you both, and any help you can offer will be valuable.”

“I can not add anything to what was already said. You need to see it for yourself to really judge the situation. Whatever this light is, it feels very dangerous and ... I don't know how to put it into words ... way above anyone's ability to affect in any way. In short, we need to be ready for anything.”

As Larkin watched Isobela offer their assistance to the group, he took the opportunity to look at their new companions. A Tiefling, an Elf, and a Madrai made for quite the varied party. Each had their own strengths that would help them in the Gauntlight. Besides, they'd come highly recommended by Wrin. Undoubtedly they were formidable allies. He wondered what they thought of him: a man in a black judge's robe with a greataxe strapped to his back is not something you see every day.

He saw the disbelief on the Tiefling's face and the surprise in her voice when she learned about Lys leaving. Were the two together or just very close? Either way, it was obviously distressing to her, and understandably so: who better to face the unknown with than a trusted friend? He had that in Isobela. If she left without saying goodbye, he'd likely be surprised and disappointed, too. He stepped forward to stand beside Isobela and looked at Sable.

"We will be ready, all of us, to puzzle out whatever this is together. Hopefully your companions will return swiftly with helpful information."

He offered her a controlled, but comforting, smile.

"We'll work best together if we know our collective strengths and weaknesses. What are your names and specialties? You already know Isobela's and mine, but I'd be happy to answer any additional questions you may have."

Milo's tail was wagging. New people! He took in as much as he could of the newcomers' scents as he could without making them mad by getting too close. It was a bit hard to differentiate between the scents, but he'd figure that out when they were fine with him sniffing them.

"I'm a Good Boy!" he happily introduced himself, "Just stay behind me, and I'll protect you. And distract the bad guys."

He was kind of sad that bright girl was gone, but not so much with fox boy. He was rude and careless. But maybe not a bad boy? He wasn't sure. It didn't matter. They were off doing important stuff, so now he wouldn't try to get himself killed all the time. Hopefully.

"I'm not good at figuring out stuff," he freely admitted, "We saw this scary light, and it made a really bad noise. I don't like it. You can help, right? You're smart! I can tell."

The return trip through the Fogfen had been surprisingly fine. No monsters at all. The place was still scary, though.

"Be careful in the swamp. There are monsters, many monsters. They can surprise you, and they're dangerous. Just stay behind me, okay?"

Elspeth waited for her turn to speak, letting Sable and Good Boy answer first before addressing the two newcomers:

"Sable is right. We found a room filled with ominous magic, one beyond our skills. We decided to return to Wrin so she could help us solve its mystery. Again, that magic seemed beyond our collective abilities; perhaps your presence in the group will change that equation." she offered.

"Well met and welcome. I am Elspeth. I was trained in the ways of the Arcane arts... I, too, hail from Absalom, where I studied at the Luminous Arcanum." she added with a hint of pride.

'Technically not a lie.' she thought to herself.

"But adventuring is a new career for me, and, truth be told, this is my very first job."

"State your names and specialties!" Repeated Sable Larkin's words with a smirk. "Did you work with the guards? They like to ask these kinds of questions with that very expression."

Her mood was far from light - there were too many reasons for that - and it was written all over her face. She shrugged, flicking her tail in irritation. "Didn’t expect Wrin to leave out details, especially something as basic as our names," she muttered. "I’m Sable. My ‘specialty,’ as you put it, is dungeons. Been doing it for a while—exploring ruins, digging up relics, and hauling anything useful back to Wrin for sale."

She paused, thinking for a moment, before adding, "I’m good with traps, can fight when I need to, and I’ve got a decent aim with a bow. Lys and I, we’ve opened up more than a few ruins together."

Her forced smile barely touched her eyes as she continued. "But this one… it’s tougher than anything we’ve handled before. I just hope Lys and Elowen find something useful, because we’re definitely going to need it."

Larkin listened carefully as Milo and Elspeth spoke, nodding a greeting at the end of their introductions. Though he didn't expect Sable's vitriol, he didn't outwardly respond to it. His expression remained neutral, if not slightly interested, and his overall demeanor remained calm.

"Hearing directly from the horse's mouth provides a better understanding of a person than secondhand information," he said coolly. "Let's hope that, between you and Lys, we retained the more effective dungeon delver."

"Ooookay," Isobela said as she stepped between Larkin and Sable. Clapping her hands lightly to emphasize each word, she continued, "So- tensions are high." She put her back to Larkin and gave Sable a warm smile, with a wink. "Not a guard, but a judge. Whatcha gonna do?" She shrugged with her hands opened outwards at her side. "I'm sorry we're not your friends." No, that didn't come out right. "What I mean is, I'm sorry your two friends aren't here today; I know we probably can't fill their shoes."

She stepped back, next to Larkin. "But we'll try." She accented the last word by nudging Larkin in the ribs. "I'm a scholar and he's the guy with the axe. So, good news, Elspeth - you're not the newest adventurer in the room anymore!" Another, more awkward smile.

"Anywho, when you're ready I'm good to see what you've found. Hopefully Wrin's faith in our ability to help was well-placed."

"Just be sure to stay in front of me," she said to Milo.

Whether it was Isobela’s bright demeanor or because she wasn’t bothered by Larkin’s assumptions about Lys, but Sable's tail had stopped its agitated swishing and her facial expression softened. No point in snapping back at those offering help.

"Scholar is exactly what we need, it seems, and as many as possible. All we’ve got so far are mysteries and way too many questions with no answers."

Sable showed the crude map. "This is what we got from the tribe of Mitflits. As you see, one place is more dangerous than the other. And here," she pointed at the room, "we found that blood spot but the stairs up. It looked as if someone's was drained of all the blood. Yet, no body. And the trapdoor above was well locked."

She unfolded the crude map, the parchment crinkling under her fingers. "This here is what we got from a tribe of Mitflits," she explained, tracing her finger across the map. "Each place on here is more dangerous than the last. And here," she pointed at the room with entrance to the light, "we found the bloodstain. But no body, just a pool of blood beneath the trap door. Looked like someone had been drained completely. And yet the trapdoor above was still locked tight."

Sable paused and her eyes narrowed in thought. "Who brought that light? Where did the blood come from? And what is that light even for?" She shook her head, frustration seeping into her voice again. "Like I said, nothing but questions."

Larkin glanced at Isobela when she elbowed his side. He was pleased to see Sable relax, although he was still suspicious of her sudden animosity towards him. He stepped closer to inspect the map and listened to Sable's explanation.

What in the world are Mitflits? he wondered.

That was a question for another time. He absorbed every detail as Sable's finger traced the parchment. If the rooms were more dangerous as they progressed, then perhaps the room with the light in it was not the place they wanted to be. It could potentially be dangerous to stay within. Whatever lay beyond the trap door might provide more answers. At the very least, there was something up there draining blood from people or animals and taking their corpses. It struck him as incredibly strange and unusual.

"The answer to the light's origins may lay beyond that trap door. Was it made of wood? If so, my axe may be able to get through. We can also borrow a ladder and handaxe from my parents' farm, if needed," he offered. "I'm sure we could find a sizeable log to use as a battering ram, if you think that would be more effective. We have plenty of ways to try opening that trap door."

Sable's tail snapped again impatiently.

"No, we already opened the trap door. It leads to the light chamber, the dangerous one that we described. The point is, the blood was already there in the room when the door was still closed. And we did not find any traps on that door that could cause the death or bleeding of someone."

She stopped and looked at Larkin, checking if the picture was clear to him.

Larkin stared evenly at Sable. He wasn't sure why this woman took offense to everything he said. She was rather defensive and aggressive, seemingly for no reason at all. Suspicion nagged at him. She had lashed out when she said he sounded like a guard, quieted when Isobela mentioned he was a judge, and tempered her annoyance when he'd made a suggestion. Was she in some sort of trouble? Had she done something illegal? Might there be a warrant out for her arrest? He'd prosecuted many an adventurer who thought themselves above the law. Had he just met another one before they were caught?

He scrutinized her, looked her up and down, and took his time measuring her up. He didn't care how long the silence stretched or how uncomfortable it might be for the others. When challenged, he met the challenge. And while he may not react as he normally would due to Isobela's influence, he certainly would not tolerate disrespect.

"Thank you for providing more information. Initially, you didn't indicate you'd unlocked the trap door. In the future, provide complete information so you do not get annoyed by my inability to read minds." His tone was low and calm.

Larkin shifted so his feet stood shoulder-width apart and loosely clasped his hands behind his back, his arms relaxed. He looked down at the map, studied it for a few seconds, and then returned his gaze to Sable.

"At the risk of irritating you again, I have another question: was there blood or evidence of struggle anywhere else in or around this area?" he asked, addressing the room.

Sable gave Larkin a long look. The out-of-place judge’s robe, the greataxe slung over his back like some misplaced badge of authority, and his obvious habit of interrogating rather than conversing - it was all irritating to her in the present situation.

But when he calmly and patiently pointed out the gap in her explanation, something clicked. He wasn’t being difficult for the sake of it. He was trying to help, but in her haste and worry, she had jumped to conclusions.

She took a slow breath, calming down undeserving frustration. It wasn’t his fault, after all. The situation was getting to her, and she wasn’t being fair.

"Alright," she said with a notably calmer voice, "You’re right. I didn’t mention that we opened the trapdoor already. I should’ve been clearer about that."

She rubbed the back of her neck, glancing down at the map to collect her thoughts. "Look, I’m not trying to snap at you. It’s just… this place, the light, the blood, Lys disappearing without a word - it’s a lot. And when you’re in it, dealing with it firsthand, it all feels heavier than it sounds when I’m just explaining it. I’ve been through a lot of ruins, and seen a lot of things, but this is different. This feels dangerous in a way I can’t put my finger on."

She raised her eyes again. "So, no. There wasn’t any blood or signs of struggle outside the light chamber. Just the pool beneath the trapdoor, like it was waiting for us. And the trapdoor was locked before we got there - no traps, no obvious signs of how someone could’ve bled out. That’s what’s throwing me off. Maybe there is something under that blood puddle but we did not check."

Sable paused for a second, with her tail now flicking in an almost apologetic rhythm. "Anyway, I’ll try to keep it clearer from now on. I know we’re all here for the same reason, and we need to work together to figure this out."

Milo sidled closer to the robe-clad lady while the others were talking. He didn't want to interrupt the important discussion, even if he was a bit wary that they were getting too angry. At least they weren't angry at him. But he liked horned girl, and if beard guy was angry with her, that was bad. He'd go between them if they started fighting.

"Uhm, hello?" he tried to get Isobela's attention, "What is an Ant-O-Mist? If you're a true Ant-O-Mist, are everyone else false?"

He kept an ear on talking, even if it was hard to follow along. But he remembered the blood, and there was something horned girl forgot to mention.

"Smart girl said the blood was enchanted," he shared, "It smelled like fresh blood. Maybe magic kept it fresh?"
