A Meeting of the Low Table

The sun hangs low over the city of Tremont casting scarlet colors over the waters of the harbor and various warehouses and taverns there. The streets were quiet, even the taverns across the docks were subdued. A new power has moved into the city of Tremont and tensions have been rising.

The Low Table called a gathering, a time for everyone to come together to voice their concerns and receive council. Orders have been given to travel in small groups, but not larger gatherings or anything that would cause undue attention. The entrances to the labyrinth, the sewers and caves below Tremont were watched closely to make sure that only members of the Low Table entered.

The order to stagger entrance was enforced.

Once inside the large cavern several tables of food had been set up, but mostly fruits and vegetables, some meats were being roasted, but only on coals for a longer cook. Scents of perfume and incense fill the air, groups gather and drift apart organically, none remaining together long as rumors and conspiracies rippled through the crowds breaking upon them like waves.

Rumors that Hammar was dead filled most of those rumors, he and two of his best enforcers were ambushed in the market in broad daylight, though no one has come forward as witness and no investigations have been made.

Wotcha was heading home. The Low Council had called and he would never miss the opportunity to meet up with his "family".

The young kenku had been performing down at the Hornpipe, one of the more raucous taverns down by the docks, but tonight had been a quiet night...as had most nights this week. Every inn, bar and tavern seemed dour compared to normal.

He hustled along the alleys and back streets, hood pulled up and cloak pulled tightly around himself, flitting from one shadow to the next. Gone were the glamorous clothes, the trappings of his trade...there would be no more performances this evening, though his work was far from over.

Stopping suddenly, he glaced around then raised a horn to his lips, its silent call warning Blind Bill of his approach. The "beggar" sat at one entrance to the labyrinth and held out a begging bowl as Wotcha came close.

"Alms fer the poor, an a copper fer Copper!" whispered the fledgling, dropping a single coin with 6 nicks in the edge into the bowl...a ritual that granted him passage. Normally he'd have stayed for a chinwag, but today he had more important business.

...for today he'd heard a rumor, a rumor he knew was spreading like wildfire, and he had to find out the truth! Swiftly, he hustled on into the tunnels.

Inside a most curious member of the Low Table already sat off to the side, and was very much was dressed glamorously like he always was. The Magi, or Priest of Arcana by another name, had his normal finery kept immaculate by generous uses of Prestigitation and Mending on his expensive white robes and colorful livery. In a room of mostly tension and unease, Egg, for this is the name he preferred to go by, held his normal subtle, pleasant smile and the same glimmer in his eyes that had led him to many a strange beverage, and many a strange bed.

It's not that he was unaware of the troubles, but a certain optimism gripped him that things will work out. It's not that he didn't feel the loss, but his way was to celebrate through mourning, just as he preferred to celebrate successes, holidays, and just about any excuse he could find, and an excuse he could certainly find most days.

Why such a man held company with the downtrodden of the Low Table was asked often, always with a similar response. "Those who have little and struggle are far more intriguing, make for far more fascinating company than the well-off and content". He himself though put on a front of being well-off and content even as he gambled away and spent any coin he earned, one thing that made him fairly popular along with his ability to cure all but the most persistent ills.

Hm... I feel tonight is a good night for a passionate tryst, to lay our feelings and hearts out at the passing of poor Hammer, to loosen our doubts and woes in ecstasy. But who... surely would be uncouth to spend a whole evening flirting and persuading. Indeed, someone else already looking to find another soul to share time with...

As the holy man contemplated upon worldly pleasures, he took a sip of the glass of wine he had in hand, and looked across the room, gauging the overall mood, and to see if he couldn't find his paramour of the night...

Kit copes with the day's tension by stealing everything he can get his hands on. Nothing that isn't nailed down is safe from Kit! He cuts a swathe of theft across the city and strides into the gathering with a heap of rings, a duchess' coral rosary, and a bundle of the good bishop's correspondence with his mistress. He simply quirks an eyebrow at the refreshments on offer before taking seat. He glances back and forth, curious what this is all about.

Tiny Tony
Medium, Human Fighter

AC 18

HP 56/56

HD 4/4d10, 2/2d8

An old man sits by the pier, watching as the hustle and bustle of the day die down. He takes in the sight of the sunset, a beauty so breathtaking yet so fleeting. Gold hues morph into fiery crimson, only to deepen into a rich royal purple. The glory of the heavens fade away before our very eyes, each and every day. The fleeting nature of this celestial display is a bittersweet reminder of the impermanence of all things beautiful.

He coils a rope on top of his shoulders, moving in time with the lapping of the waves. Tidied up and tucked in, he gives one last look at the sky and sea before making his way to a familiar food spot.

There is a strange stillness in the air. It feels charged almost electric, like it is waiting for the briefest touch to come alive.

He greets servers and patrons alike, heading towards the back of the house. At a lone corner, past all the cookery, he shimmies past a tiny door, opening up to a winding path to the aqueducts. During his slow descent, his hands can't sit still. They yearn to do something, to wring something. He comes upon a queue, a door, and a doorman.

Veins pop out of his forearms and neck. The wait is getting to him. Once he is free to talk, he lets out a barrage to whoever is closest, his fervor curbed as he can, his teeth gritted the whole while. "Hammar? Dead?! In broad daylight?! Where are the corpses? Where are the coffers? How come nobody has any answers?! I fear that as we scurry after phantoms, the enemy pulls puppet strings!"

Copper would have preferred to keep a low profile at the large gathering. A disguise, perhaps. But Silk had forbidden it the first time they'd talked about these gatherings. While she wanted to keep his work for the Fourth Chair on the down-low, there was value in others of the guild knowing he was Low Table.

So he'd adopted the opposite tactic. Hide in plain sight.

Responding promptly, he'd arrived relatively early to start identifying marks--the dim, the non-angry drunk, the nervously friendly. Acting as if he knew them from previous gatherings, he'd chatted them up, learning what he could of their lives. Placed in that awkward social situation of having to admit they'd forgotten the friendly young rogue, most of the marks had played along, allowing him into their confidences. A master of the con, Copper had kept his information gathering efforts friendly and vague, feeling them out to learn about hobbies, personal relationships, achievements... the kinds of details a casual work friend might know.

He'd kept his story straight as he moved from mark to mark, doling out the same work-friend level of personal details based on an alias he'd prepared in advance back when Silk had first told him about these gatherings and shut down the idea of a disguise. His alias was mostly true, only deviating in terms of how long he'd been a guild member and the work he'd been doing.

As he worked the gathering crowd, he looked for his real friends. Three were members of his urchin family. They'd be difficult to spot in the crowds, and likely find him before he found them--given his hide-in-plain-sight approach. His other friends were both standouts: Wotcha the kenku, and Egg the... egg-headed elf.

Egg was the standout: tallish, dome-headed, always dressed for success. The first true friend Copper had spotted. As he worked his way through the crowds toward the magic-priest, more than one of his new friends called out from among the various huddles of rogues, offering an inside joke or an introduction to others in the huddle. He smiled and responded in his easy-going manner taking the time to strengthen false bonds and meet new people.

Eventually, he reached the magic-priest, flashing his lopsided grin. "Hey, Egg. Find anything particularly tasty in this place?" He left the wording intentionally ambiguous, not sure if the priest was hungry, horny, or both. Likely it was both.

Despite the tension in the hall, the coppery-haired young fixer seemed his usual devil-may-care self.

Tony

The look on the mans face went from passive to abject terror in a fraction of a moment. "I...I just heard it today myself, I don't know why or what or..." to his credit he had not lost control of his faculties, but fear screamed in his eyes. Perhaps he knew who was lifting him from the ground and knew the reputation that he carried. "I only know that they called for everyone to be here." The man gulped, but remained still, waiting for Tony to release or kill him.

Kit

Another thief, a roof runner slid down into a seat next to Kit, even though there were several other seats open with a bit of space. But this young woman, Sal the seagull looked Kit up and down. Sal roosted in bell towers about Tremont, she would often sneak into merchants homes and remove things that were heavily dusty, leaving only a void in the dust behind. "I managed to knick Lady Torvains dragon tooth earrings yesterday. I have been eyeing those for a year, but she finally left them out of the safe after the Last Tide Ball." she said pulling at the earring that was dangling from her ear at that very moment.

Wotcha

As Wotcha dropped the coin into the bowl, the young man, who turned out to be a woman pulled the lid of a basket off a aqueduct vent leading below. "Be quick about it feathers, the Table is supposed to propose something big, a gathering like this has not been called for a long stretch" The basket led to a manhole that led to a very dry bed that even with the high level of traffic only had two sets of footprints, both going the wrong way for someone trying to follow them to the headquarters.

Egg & Copper

I leave this to the two of you to continue your conversation.

Egg finds the mood... sober. Well, the mood is a great many things each individual grappling with the troubling news in their own way, all of whom are more... in the present moment than Egg himself is.

Very well, then. We embrace the discomfort.

He may center his own whims in his mind, but he accepts the feelings of others too, whatever they may be.

As Copper greets him, Egg smiles and nods. "Afraid not. Oh, I suppose the wine is passable..."

Copper can surmise it is indeed both,

"How may this humble priest help a prince among men? Shall I offer an ear to hear your woes? Perhaps I can offer wisdoms from my holy text? And yet still, I could simply be a friend this most... troubling eve?" He means every word, Copper knows he'll fill whatever role is asked of him, though by the knowing look on his face he thinks he knows what the young man will choose.

Tony stifles a cough. It is not merely the lack of answers that frustrate him. This coordinated dance, this measured response, all of this simmering and lying in wait. He lets go of the poor fellow, and plays along with the ebb and flow of scoops and snoops, still visibly red, still shaking with anticipation.

Tony can feel it in his gut that a storm is brewing. This is all to disquieting. It hurts to feel this helpless, caged and controlled by hypotheticals. To worry is to suffer, but to not worry is to be unprepared.

In an effort to not further be conducive to the feedback loop of trepidation, he seeks for a seat he can stew on. He filters through the aqueduct, hoping the murmurs around him could carry some form of good news.

Upon reaching some semblance of succor, he sits at attention. He gives some of the advices he'd heard about mindfulness a try. Counting down from ten, from fifty, naming blue things in the room, going down the alphabet and naming things he sees.

'Restraint must be stored in the jaw,' he surmises, and his feels so tired, so spent.

Copper ran a hand through his hair thoughtfully. As if seriously considering the options, he deadpanned, "Hmm. That's a tough call. On the one hand, my roommate stole my croissant from the preserver in our apartment before I woke up this morning." Indignantly, he asked, "Can you believe it?" After what he took for a commiserating expression of sympathy from the priest, Copper pressed on, once again thoughtful. "Certainly a woe-sharing-worthy experience. But then again, that scriptural commentary about the hypothetical arcane uses of... procreative magic was certainly interesting. I'd be curious to hear more. But..."

Copper paused as if considering a weighty matter and coming to a decision. "I guess I'm just tired from working this crowd and could use a break with a friend who already knows my secret."

Months ago, Copper had filled the priest in on his alias activities within the guild. The priest had heard directly from Silk that Copper's identity as her fixer was never to be revealed.

The young fixer renewed the lopsided grin. "So, have you seen Wotcha around?"

Nodding to the gatekeeper, Wotcha ruffled his feathers before striding forth. He knew the path like the back of his hand, but he still occasionally stopped, looked and listened, wary in the wake of the news he'd been given.

As he neared the cavern the sounds and smells of the gathering reached the youngster. It seemed more subdued than he would have expected. He knew how rare these events were, but the shock waves of Hammars death had clearly brought down the normally raucous crowd. Wotcha wondered if he should try to lighten the tone with some music, but decided against it for now...he would judge the mood once he'd met up with his closest friends and allies.

Entering the main hall, the kenku had three priorities. The first, pick up a drink. Secondly, earwig and schmooze his way around the cavern to check what others had heard. Then finally, to find Copper to share what he had learned

"Then a friend I shall be." He says the words to Copper as if accepting one of what could have been several possibilities, even if they both knew Egg already knew Copper's answer. No few people had tried to call out Egg's behavior as making him a lesser priest or even unworthy to be a holy man, yet such verbal attacks ended up in failure as people underestimated the Elf's versatility and depth. He was shameless in his vices to be true, and he also was very practiced in soothing hearts and minds, of understanding people well. For him it's not an either/or, but a both/and.

"And it would appear Wotcha has just arrived." Perceptive is another one of Egg's traits, and if not that, the Kenku does stand out in the room.

"So as a friend then I ask to you, how are you? Truly? I find myself... struggling to let the atmosphere take me in as well. I seek... a balance in all things, and this evening feels quite unbalanced, far tipped towards stress and fear. It is as if I stand apart from it." Egg offers his own feelings first, to make it a more even exchange.

Kit leans back in his seat casually as he glances at Sal's new earrings. "Very nice. The best loot takes patience for just the right moment, eh? He crosses himself most piously as he mentions the name of the recently departed member of the Low Table.

Tony

As he walks into the large gathering and finds a seat hear a few friends greeting each other and some thieves conversing. The feelings washing through the crowd fight against his attempts to find succor. There were several tapestries with blue showing images of the oceans and the sheltered bay, one particularly foppish halfling wearing a violently blue outfit. One of the chairs at the Table upon a Dias. Then an Apron on a man tending a grill, a Bald Elf, Copper a Fixer for one of the chair members, a Dwarf, an Entertainer playing a set of hand drums that was drowned out by the roar of the low murmurs washing through the cavern...

Kit

The look upon Sal the Seagull's face broke from a smile to one of shame. "No, I was casing a ship that had recently come into the harbor. A Grand ship with an unnerving number of battle mages walking the deck." she said moving her hair to again hide the dragon tooth earrings.

Wotcha

When entering the large hall the noise rose from a growing murmur to a roar, even though no one was yelling, the combination of so many people even speaking softly created a large sound. It was not hard to find Watcha's friends, Copper's red hair and Egg's bald had a way of standing out for those who knew what to look for, and they were standing next to each other, and they seemed to draw a small opening around them.

Copper and Egg

There seemed to be a growing eddy of space around the pair as they conversed, which means they could have stretched their arms out and only brush others as they moved through the cavern.

Copper drew an apple from the small leather cross-body bag that never left his side. He'd been to the refreshments table earlier and stuffed a few choices offerings into the bag. He bit into the apple, a small polite bit, the expression on his face signaling approval of the flavor.

He considered the priest as he chewed and swallowed. "I feel ya." Pitching his voice low for Egg's ears only, he continued. "I tend to operate in my own little corner of the guild. Never been rotated through the various Chairs. So I've no connection to Hammer. But of all the Chairs, he had to be the most likely to die violently. I mean, his job required him to be visible and feared and hated. You can't scare people into paying up if you and your enforcers don't spend time making personal visits, right? That's the job of an enforcer: making visits and threats. I recon he was the most hated of all the Chairs."

Copper signaled with a hand for a pause as he cast a cantrip. The apple was rather juicy and he did not want to end up with sticky fingers. Finishing his magic, he let go the apple and it hovered in place before him.

"I suppose that's a bass-ackwards way of saying things could be worse. If it were any of the other Chairs taken out in broad daylight, I'd be more concerned. As things stand, I think they're going to announce the new Fourth Chair and the lead investigator into Hammer's death, tell us there's nothing to worry about and to cooperate fully with the investigation, and then send us home."

Two years of work Fixing problems for the Fourth Chair had further skewed the upbeat urchin's perspective. He tended to see problems as opportunities, and as things to be fixed via creative solutions.

The apple came to his face as if held by an invisible hand, and he took another bite.
