The touch was sickening and rolled through the dwarf's skin, muscle, sinew, and bone.

Ingrid pushed through that feeling, brought her mace up on her opposite shoulder and swung again.

~ Skum Cave - Post Battle ~

~ Month 2, Day 9: Afternoon ~

Ingrid's mace-smack sends the skum nearly flying as it's eyes close and it offers no defense against the subsequent fall. He lands awkwardly half in the water and half out, but his body continues to slide into the pond until it drops deeper into the water then you can see.

The snakes dissipate and go back to whatever hell they were called from. Everyone pauses to quickly take stock of the chamber and whatever threats might remain.

Cloaker bodies are still about and taking up space with one still breathing, though barely. In contrast, most of the party seems relatively fine. Some cuts and bruises, sure, and some of you took a few more blows than others. The only who looks to be in particularly bad shape is Vannan, who remains on the ground with his lips slowly turning deeper shades of blue with each passing second.

Coals stares down at Vannan, barely registering that their opponents are out and the fight is over.

Her weapon and shield hit the ground, then she herself drops to her knees next to the elf. Her small, scaly hands are placed upon his still form. Her yellow eyes close and she prays quietly.

"Please," she says, voice quavering. "Let him live."

Coalscuttle's lays her hand on Vannan's still body. Her magic courses over and through him...but it seems to have no discernable effect. No breath passes his lips nor does his chest rise to take any in. He lies as still as the ground beneath him.

Nothing.

In response to her prayer, Coals feels the power flow from her and over her friend, as she had felt the previous times she'd used this ability.

But...

Nothing.

Vannan fails to get up, fails to breathe again, fails to... do anything except get colder.

The realization slowly dawns on her.

She is too late.

She's failed.

The keening high-pitched wail of a kobold in grief echoes off the walls of the chamber.

Draco sheaths his rapier and gives a look around. With no more threats around, he goes to approach Cessah, to ask something. He wasn't sure what as his mind suddenly got drawn to the Kobolds wail. He was rushing over before he could think, as instincts flare up at the sound of a friend in despair. He stops by the body of Vannan, then kneels down and attempts to heal him as well.

Draco's magic does nothing. No signs of life at all, only further confirmation of death.

Quim

The snake in front of him had disappeared when it's summoner had been killed, but that realization did not come to Quim until long heartbeats afterwards. He stood, staring at where the snake had been a moment ago, and thrust his blade into the air a few times to ensure it hadn't simply gone invisible in some way.

As the fighting faded with the sinking skum body, so too did Quim's bloodthirst. Only then did he recall a thing he'd overheard a soldier say once about the battlefield. With quicker steps than he truly needed, Quim bounded toward the downed cloaker and plunged his sword into its meaty body. Satisfied that they were truly dead, he looked for the next step bequeathed to him from some stranger's wisdom. But before he could think of what that might be, the kobold's anguished screams broke his fervor.

He watched from across the room as Draco tended to someone out of view. Quim paced around the edge of the room, the central platform and rock formation obstructing his full view, until he stood beside the oversized dwarf. He hadn't the ear to know what Draco was casting, but he knew it to be magic nonetheless. He waited to see if it had it's intended result.

Draco stares at Vanan's body, fully expecting him to get up and grunt or something. Constantly, magic has seemingly been able to twist the world and do the impossible. But this? This meant that magic had a limit to what it could do and bringing the dead back was it.

Unless he just wasn't strong enough? But that knowledge didn't help now. So he instead looks up, then to Ingrid. If anyone could do anything now, it would be the one person versed in magic and healing in the group, not his mess of magical power that was brute forcing. Maybe he was replicating the spell wrong and was missing something?

Coal's keening scraped the edges of Ingrid's awareness as the corpse of her foe slid into the watery dark. Who? She wondered, but at a glance it was plain. Vannan had been difficult to trust at first. Abrasive, standoffish, untrusting. Dwarf-like in those regards, she reflected in silence. It was why, then, that she had come to trust him faster then the others. Predictability, and mutual understanding. Knowing the course he might take. She hadn't expected he die here.

Death was part of life. Ingrid's expression tightened, and she made for where the woman had been heard screaming before all the conflict began without word of comfort to the others. She beckoned Quim to follow. This was not a place to mourn losses. Best they finish what they came to do, and quit this place.

~ Skum Cave - Post Battle ~

~ Month 2, Day 9: Afternoon ~

As the chaos and raw energy of the battle subsides and everyone feels safer with each passing moment that the enemies have been defeated, the grim reality that enemies are not the only who have fallen grows more stark. The duergar large size suddenly shrinks back down as he checks in on his companions, Pox and Eunice, making sure to give the goat a good scratch behind her ears.

Cessah.jpg.f03a4f38a12908686f889e45afccf6e9.jpgByran looks at first to Coalscuttle and her wailing mourn, but clearly unsure of what comfort her might offer he instead approaches Cessah, who is still intently studying the runed pedestal. When he places his hand on her shoulder to get her attention, she merely glances over at him briefly with a somewhat dismissive, "Oh, I'm fine." Tracing her fingers over and around the runes she quietly speaks words that make little sense to anyone else. "What is this one? Life? Birth? Rebirth...live again..." she trails off and is silent for a few moments. When she speaks again she is now standing, and her voice is loud enough for everyone in the tower to hear. "This pedestal, this altar...I might be able to use it to...to revive him." She looks to the runes again, shaking her head and pursing her lips intermittently, but she continues, "I can't be sure without a great deal more study, but it seems that this altar has some power of life and death. I don't think it can create life on its own, but I think it can...borrow? Steal might be a better word, I'm not sure."

"This place, inhabited by abominations, is not where I would risk my eternal soul for a second chance at life. Better we honor Vannan for what he accomplished. Toast his name, lift his voice in song, and raise monument to his memory that he might never be forgotten. I wouldn't sacrifice another life to see his returned. You have given me a great distrust of these old places, Cessah." She began to pace, retrieving her shield. It made her anxious to hear Coal cry so, but a part of her now far more ancient then her years knew that this grief must be one weathered. An internal war.

"You fought well." Ingrid complemented the Duergar, as she stowed her things.

Cessah.jpg.f03a4f38a12908686f889e45afccf6e9.jpgThe eagerness on Cessah's face is obvious as she turns to Ingrid. "We have a chance here to attempt a miracle! Don't let your fears or misgivings about me stop you from saving your friend's life. Please!" she pleads with Ingrid, but turns to address the rest of the group as she tries to convince someone to agree with her.

Rath.jpg.8b6ff1880958019bfaabe4590a43dbc2.jpgThe duergar nods at Ingrid, "As did you. Knocked that sea slug t' the depths, where'e belongs!"  He let out a chuckle to himself as he quickly shrunk back down to his normal size, smoothly slipping the shaft of his warhammer into his belt. Taking a leisurely stroll over to the cloaker near Vannan, giving it a push with his armored boot. "Er...this feller's still breathin'." He raises his eyebrow and shrugs a bit, though he suddenly seems to be contemplating something as he slowly turns to the group. "This borrowin' of a life...any reason we couldn't use this one?" he emphasizes the cloaker with another push from his boot. "I'm gonna smash him with m'hammer anyhow, so why not bring back yer friend instead?" He offered another shrug, though he doesn't display the energy of zeal that she does, he seems to be simply offering a possibility. "Yer friend, yer call," he adds as he starts looking around the room and picking up useable arrows to hand back to the tiefling.

Quim

Quim swallowed hard. His gaze had followed the duergar over to the other cloaker; the one Quim had planned to see to next had he not been interrupted by the wailing kobold. The dark dwarf's assessment had brought Quim's actions full circle. He'd essentially cut their likely candidates in half by offering the other cloaker a mercy stab just a few moments ago. If not for Coal's crying and Cessah's interruption, Quim would have done the same thing to that cloaker too. The realization made him reconsider doing anything else in the room, even speak up.

It didn't help that the conversation was leagues outside what Quim understood anyways. Anything that stumbled out of his mouth now would no doubt make him look foolish. The plight of a backwoods pig farmer, no doubt.

Being this uneasy made him itchy to solve problems with his sword or fist. With Cessah's body language suggesting she wasn't quite ready to give up the fight, Quim shuffled a few steps closer to her. His blade down at his side, but not put away.

Coals' crying has quieted down - kobolds apparently don't have the lung capacity to sustain such a wail for long - so she overhears Cessah's eager suggestions.

She makes a snap decision.

"We - we must try it!" she stammers as she stands to her feet, wiping moisture from her nose. "Vannan is our friend. Cessah, please, do what you can."
