It is not a very cheery thought, but perhaps the tunnel down in the pit was not put there so you could leave the pit, but rather so someone or something can come in a clear it up? I would assume that if someone had fallen in and survived that they would have not left the daggers behind as they may need them later. So I agree with Bernard. We should expect to find something moving around in here other than us. Hopefully of the living kind.

3 hours ago, Shocker said:

Bernard listens to the others discussing the pit “There is something missing here. There is dried blood on the spears, but where are the bodies that have shed it? So let’s be careful we might not be alone in here.

When Bernard looks closer, he realizes that the situation is even stranger than he thought at first glance. There is blood on the floor, but the spears appear to be clean. Or blood-free at least.

Once on the other side of the pit, Tabitha slung her shield back into place.

"These are all very good questions," she said as she peered back down gingerly into the trap. "I wager we won't have answers to them without going down there, though. Especially if Lyra is right. But, that means either there are other tomb robbers to deal with... or caretakers."

When the light was shone into the pit, Tabitha would try to get a look at the blood to see how dry it looked; was it still red or had it curdled to that telltale brown?

Molly.jpg.12e6a20b92637657efe19d090cb51596.jpgMolly gets down on his hands and knees and creeps over to the edge of the pit and looks to see if there is an easy way to get to the bottom and not get stuck on the spears. He also looks for a place to tie off the rope in case there is a way.

//i.imgur.com/UZu2gyS.png"Do we want to meet that cleaner now?" Thugnar stopped on his way to the northern exit to join the conversation.

"Can be the back entry to the house." He scratched his beard. "Or, you know, maintenance tunnels connecting all traps. Might be worth a shot."

Thugnar also looked around for something to fix the rope on. Should none be found, all he could suggest is to lower someone down. Not the best solution but at least scouting would be possible this way.

Molly and Thugnar

You look closer at the pit, and you don't think getting down will be that difficult. The spears have gaps between them, big enough to fit a person. They'd be a big danger to those washed into the pit by the Water Serpent but not to someone being careful, especially if you use a rope.

** OOC: No roll required to lower someone down into the pit. Jumping down is a DC 5 Dex check that you most definitely do not want to miss.

Everyone Else

You explore down the hallway, using your pole to check the slabs of the floor and proceeding very carefully. The hall itself seems safe. There is another chamber at the north end but you haven't gotten close enough to look inside yet. There are also two hallways branching off, one to the west and one to the east. There is also a stairwell that branches off to the east.

** OOC: See updated map. Time underground: 30 minutes.

Molly

Llore hovers near you, and uses his torch to light anything you try to look at.

"This is exciting, isn't it? Morgan won't believe the story about how you caught yourself over that pit."

He speaks in a whisper, but its the kind of whisper that carries.

Uh gentlemen. Before you exert yourselves climbing down into the pit, I would like to point out that there is a set of stairs right here that go down. There are also another hallway branching off in either direction further on and this one continues too.

So what say we take the stairs and see what is down there?

Lyra waits a few seconds and then starts down the stairs, trying to keep an eye out for other traps, like in the stories she was told as a child. She gingerly applies pressure to each stair to test it before stepping down and tries to hold the light so it would highlight any strings across the steps. She also scans the walls for small holes where darts are spears or such might come out at her.

Yup, she is paranoid.

*** OOC - The way Lyra is moving is basically the correct way to explore a dungeon and the reason that dungeon movement is so slow in OSR games. In general, I assume you are being careful when you explore unless you tell me you're going fast (ie running from a big monster), but it never hurts to call out specific things you're checking for if you suspect that sort of thing is there.

Bernard is the never do well second son of Count Dargolin, and has sent to manage his father’s estate in an out of the way village. In the counts words to stop him from getting into duels with other men all the times, especially not over the wenches.

He still isn't the shining Champion his father would wish for, but the experiences in the starless sea, have increased his martial skills and sensibilities.

"Curious and curiouser" the young noble mutters "There is blood on the floor but none on the spear tips of shafts. They can't be cleaned of by rushing water, or the floor would not still have some on it"

//i.imgur.com/UZu2gyS.png"So, who is going down?" Thugnar was ready to play his part in lowering someone down. However, if there were no volunteers, he would shrug and move to the passage behind the pit.

While Lyra was checking the first staircase, Thugnar was studying the construction itself. He was not a mason, but hoped for the blood of his ancestors to kick in. The murals on the wall he did not care much about but who built those walls and what to expect of them - that was interesting.

Thugnar placed his calloused hand over the stones and walked along the wall listening to the feelings.

Hearing Bernard's explanation of the spears and the way the water would have washed away the blood, Tabitha had a thought.

"Wait, you're saying the spears aren't bloody, but the floor is?" She furrowed her brow at how strange that sounded. "What if those spears are fake, and the actual trap is simply a long drop? Let me borrow that pole a moment," she said as she put her flail and shield down.

Taking the pole, Tabitha would carefully lay down at the edge of the pit on her chest. She didn't trust her balance nor the slippery floor. From there, she'd use the pole to reach down into the pit and try to tap the spears to make sure there weren't an illusion. After that, she'd tap on the floor for good measure.

If it turned out the spears were real, and she found nothing else, Tabitha would stand back up and back off from the pit, handing the pole back to Bernard or whomever wanted it.
