4e paragon tier hybrid game (PbP and planned online gaming table sessions)

Haunted By Trolls and Flashbacks - Forum
Dungeons & Dragons 4e - Forgotten Realms 4e

Looking for 4-6 players for a 4e dungeons and dragons (yes: square fireballs, daily and encounter powers, standard-move-minor and flanking) game. We'll be mostly focusing on paragon tier but there will be some opportunities to play heroic level as well. See the game description for details.

I do expect a combination of character driven role play and tactical combat.

We don't have a lot of 4e games on the weave right now but a few years ago we had quite a few and it work surprisingly well in PbP format. So, dust off those old books and whip up some characters and lets get some old school tactical combat going.

I like both the slow & steady progression of a PbP game and the much faster progress that you can make with periodic synchronous sessions. With this game I am trying to bring them together. See the description section about flashback encounters for more details.

I am looking for filling all the 4 roles. Beyond that I'm looking for good writing, interesting sounding characters. I will give preference to folks who I have played with in the past and know will be good. But I expect there will some space for new players as well, so don't hesitate to put in a character application.

Game Description:

This is a Heroic and Paragon Tier 4e Game. This game has two parts one taking place in heroic tier and another part in paragon tiers. You may apply to one or both.

Paragon Campaign DescriptionIn the swamps and forests east of the the town of Moonstair a threat is growing. Trolls and other monstorous humanoids are massing under the banner of a new king. If heroes are not found, and soon, Moonstair could just be the first of many settlements that the new king of the Trollhaunt will have to crush in order to carve out the resources and territory his new nation needs to survive.

We'll run the main thread in traditional PbP fashion here on the weave using the game forum and will mostly follow the plot outlined in the module: King of the Trollhaunt Warrens by Richard Baker and Logan Bonner. Characters will be 11th level for this.

Posting frequency: I expect players to post every few days to keep the game moving.

Heroic Campaign DescriptionThis game is a series of flashbacks revealing the history of a parties adventures that took them across the realms of Faerun and from neophytes to champions. This game will take place in the form of isolated encounters taking place between level 1 and level 10. You can take one character through the whole arc or try out several.

We'll use the weave for characters, OOC chat, tracking equipment and advancements, narrating "the space between flashbacks", a game log (for us to remember what happened), and organizing the sessions. The main role play will happen using a teleconferencing + game table set up. I'm open to a variety of teleconferencing solutions (google hangouts or similar) and plan to use roll20 for the game table.

These will be encounters drawn from dungeon delve, other modules, and perhaps a homebrew encounter or two. Characters will start at level 1. Please post one or two characters. You'll have the chance to swap out characters quite freely in this part of the game (we assume time passes between flashbacks and the party composition might change).

You don't need to be able to do all the flashbacks -- life happens and this is just a game -- but of course I hope you'll only apply if you do care about this game and will make a reasonable effort to participate. I'm thinking weekends but this can be discussed. I am on california time.

Rules for both gamesMostly very standard 4e rules. I have the essentials books but please expect that I will be using the basic rules (+errata). If you have a question on how we are going to handle something, just ask.

Also, in both the live and PbP parts of the game I'll generally be using the streamlined skill challenge rules used by Rodrigo D. Lopez in the podcast "Critical Hit" http://majorspoilers.com/category/critical-hit/. I'll provide details for those not familiar.
Character Generation
Pretty straightforward.

Stats: Please generate starting stats using the standard 22 point buy.
Gold: For the heroic tier just use the usual level 1 gold rules. For the level 11 build generate gold and equipment using the standard formulas provided in the game books (free 12, 11, 10 items + 9000 gold).
Other stuff: Backgrounds are ok. Themes are ok. Hybrids are ok. No essentials classes, please. No evil or party-undermining characters, please. Go ahead and take one free expertise feat.

Ask if you have any questions. Please provide the usual backstory, description, and such.
ApplicationsI will create two aplication thread groups -- one for heroic tier characters and another for paragon tier characters. Applications should go in the appropriate thread group. Check in on the OOC thead and then create a thread for your character.

Applications due for both sides of the game: Feb 2

I love 4e and was looking forward to this, but I find playing over audio connections extremely awkward, and my schedule is very weird so it's hard to attend such sessions in their entirety (that's one of the main reasons I like playing asynchronously on message boards).

I still might be willing to give this a shot since 4e games are so rare, but how wedded are you to the audio sessions? It seems weird to me to mix the two; you risk losing both the crowd that doesn't want to play on message boards and the crowd that doesn't want to play live.

Also, as I'm mulling over character concepts, where exactly is the campaign taking place? It looks like the Nentir Vale transplanted to Faerun, but where is the Vale placed in Faerun?

I'm in a similar boat. Love 4e but I don't know how much I can commit to live sessions. If it were just doing some RP on discord that would be one thing, but otherwise I'm not sure, which sucks because this looks good.

Hmm ... What is it about the map + voice session that you don't like?

is that because of tech issues, poor bandwidth, or some other issue?

this I totally get. I like the asynchronous nature of the board as well.. but i find that this makes the pace very slow. In the games that I play via audio + a shared map we cover a lot more ground. Trying in this game to bring both together.

If I can get enough interest in the hybrid concept I want to try it because I think the overall experince could be great. But if, as you suggest, the hybird aspect turns folks off I can re-tool the game to be PbP only. At the end of the day I just want to see some 4e action on the board here and am willing to GM to make that happen.

Basically, yes. I'm using this module but placing it in faerun. I hadn't really thought of where it will be but can do so (or take suggestions from the crowd). I basically just wanted to give people the option of drawing on an established world for backstory and context .. and I know forgotten realms and eberron. This didn't seem to fit eberron exactly so I picked forgotten realms. We can work it in somehow.

Doing some wiki reading on Natir Vale and I came across the following tidbit.

"According to Christopher Perkins, the Nentir Vale was originally conceived to be part of the Forgotten Realms setting, before being used as the main region for the Points of Light setting." wiki

Just more what I know I can commit to. Discord I can do easily from my phone if I need to, but I'd feel bad if I couldn't make a session otherwise.

ok. if you played would you be able to make some sessions and not others? These are intended to be vingets where the cast can change -- if someone can't make them all that is ok.

It's a combination of several small issues, I guess, that add up to make it a turn-off.

My microphone is poor, for starters, though it's probably sufficient. Speaking personally, I find my mind wanders a lot during audio-only interactions (conference calls, podcasts, radio programs) if I don't have a visual to focus on at the same time. My schedule is erratic, so it's hard for me to block out large chunks of time, especially since I already have a weekly in-person game. And I feel awkward RPing over voice when I'm not home alone.

Individually, all things that can be overcome, but taken together I fear it would make participating a chore rather than fun.

Like I said, though, I could give it a try.
