The PitchRed Markets is a game of "economic horror", where the scariest thing about the apocalypse wasn't that the dead rose again to devour the living, but that you still have bills to pay. It's a game about the lengths that people will go to in order to escape poverty, about what price is too high to secure a better future for yourself and your loved ones.


The GameHey there, Weavers! Octavian_5 here again. I'm back from a lengthy hiatus from the site, and given I've been obsessed with it for the last few months, I figured I'd try my hand at running a game of Red Markets, an RPG that bills itself as a game of "economic horror".

"Economic horror" is a bit of a strange genre, but it's one you've probably experienced even if you didn't know what to call it. An old-school dungeon-crawl where you're tracking torches and arrows and rations. A sci-fi game where you're desperately trying to fix your ship's life support systems before you run out of air. Family game night and you're playing Monopoly, where you're praying to God above you don't land on your sister's Boardwalk hotel. It's about having less than you want or need and having to make due with it, about the suspense that comes from limited resources.

The premise of Red Markets is that the zombie apocalypse happens, and the US government pulls back east of the Mississippi River. Two-thirds of the country are abandoned, and the people left behind are declared legally dead. The PCs are Takers, mercenary entrepreneurs whose goal is to profit enough from the end of the world to retire into safety with their loved ones. But security costs, and the Loss doesn't let go of anyone or anything without a fight.

In Red Markets, the real threat isn't the shambling hordes of the undead. It's the grinding cycle of poverty and scarcity threatening to wear you down into nothing. Everything costs something in Red Markets. Good gear is necessary to survive, but equipment takes money to both purchase and maintain. Your family and friends help keep you sane, but rely on you financially. Killing zombies costs bullets. Using your laptop costs battery power. Even the rolls that don't cost any tangible resource still cost time, and can only be attempted once. The skills needed when negotiating a fat payday for a contract are not the skills needed to survive that same job. Risking death for too little reward, however, will kill you as surely as a bite, although much more slowly.

Red Markets is not a game about killing zombies. It's a game about poverty, about scarcity, about hustling to stay ahead and stay alive, about complex socio-economics and family drama...and killing zombies. It's a game about cut-throat postapocalyptic capitalism, and you're on the wrong end of the knife.


ApplicationsIf this sounds like your sort of game, you're in luck! Applying is easy, and takes a few simple steps.
  • First, copy the character sheet template here.
  • Second, browse the information about the enclave the PCs will be living in and working out of, located here. Normally, creating an enclave is a collaborative effort between players and the Market, meant to promote a greater investment in the crew's home base. I think this is a great idea, normally. However, in the interest of minimizing the time between the application period and actually getting the game rolling, I have created the enclave myself.
  • Third, check out the Boom and Bust rules we'll be using here. "Boom" and "Bust" refer to two different variants of the rules that change the tone of Red Markets ; Boom rules make the game easier and more action-packed, while Bust rules make it more difficult and make it into a gritty poverty simulator. We'll be using a mix of the two for this game. These rules are negotiable, if the players feel like they should be adjusted.
  • Finally, fill out the character sheet and post it IN THIS AD THREAD.

I will be closing applications on Friday, March 22nd, 2019. This, I feel, is plenty of time to get an application in. I will be accepting a maximum of five (5) applicants.

During the application process, feel free to coordinate with myself and your fellow applicants in regards to things such as custom gear, taking other Takers as Dependents, etc.


Player ExpectationsFor the lucky folks who get in, I'm not expecting much. I'm keenly aware that life has a nasty tendency to knee us in the yarbles (see the disclaimer box below). I'd prefer at least one post per day, Monday through Friday, with posting on the weekends optional but very much appreciated. That being said, it rarely works out that way, so I'll understand if posting is a bit more...sporadic. But if you go missing for two or three weeks without so much as a warning, I'm probably going to find somebody else to fill your spot.

Seriously, if you're going to be gone for a bit, just let me know. I'll endeavor to do the same.


Books NeededThankfully, there's only one book you need: the Red Markets core rulebook. If you don't already have it, you can obtain it here. There are no supplements at this time, so the core rulebook is all you need.


Disclaimers and WarningsThere's something I need to be upfront with you guys about. The hiatus I'm coming back from is due to medical reasons. This past August, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 neuroendocrine cancer. It's not the sort of cancer that, at present, has a cure. It's extremely aggressive. I am terminally ill. I'm not telling you all this to fish for sympathy. I'm telling you this because I believe in being upfront with my players about possible issues. And the fact that there is a chance of me dying within the next year or so, however slim that may be, is definitely a possible issue. I am also currently undergoing my second cycle of chemotherapy, which usually results in me not being up for anything beyond simply existing for a few days after each treatment. What this means is that every few weeks, there will be a few days where I am barely active, if at all.

In short, my health may be a possible concern.

However, despite the difficulties that my health might pose, I have no intentions of simply up and abandoning this game because of it. This is the only game I have any intention of participating in for the foreseeable future, and as such when I am capable of posting this game will receive my full attention. Should I need to put this game on hiatus for any reason, either temporarily or permanently, you will receive ample warning. I have no intentions of merely vanishing.

All that said, if my illness being a possible problem is a dealbreaker for you, I understand completely. I'd like to thank you for at least reading this far, and express my sincerest hopes that you find a game to join that will both suit your preferences and remain active for a long time to come.

Game Description:

When the Crash happened, the world was thrown into utter chaos. For decades, we'd been collectively obsessed with the idea of a zombie apocalypse destroying civilization and wiping the slate clean. But when the tired cliche became a terrifying reality, that obsession killed as many people as it saved. And when the smoke cleared and the ash settled, the apocalypse would up as unevenly distributed as everything else in life. There were still Have and Have-Nots: those who had a pulse and those who didn't; those who had to wake up every day knowing that they could be torn apart and eaten by the undead and those that didn't have to live with that fear; and, as always, those who had money and those who didn't.

Humanity survived by leaving part of itself behind, amputating millions of people like a gangrenous limb. And you? You're on the wrong side of the incision, which means you've survived however you could. You've spent the last five years in the Loss, scraping by the best you could in a zombie-infested wasteland where the only thing in abundance is scarcity. But abandonment has never suited you. There's a better life out there, across the quarantine line. A life where you and your loved ones don't ever have to worry about feeling cold teeth break your skin and damn you to undeath, where you don't have to fear some long-extinct disease rearing its ugly head and killing you and all your neighbors, where you live instead of just survive. But the only way to get to that life is to buy your way in, to scavenge from the corpse of the world that came before like vultures. But it's possible. You can profit from Loss. The Crash killed millions, but maybe you can still make it rich.

Or die trying.

I figured they were like character classes pretty much, but some of the wording around tough spots was vague and I was wondering. It's OK, there was a tough spot that matched Oddball to a T.

Edit: Alright, aside from the two references, my character is good to go.

Double edit: If I understand correctly, we can fill in references during play? Like we need X specialist, and it just so happens my character knows a guy that does X?

That's correct. References are people your Taker's worked with before: other Takers, DHQS Stewards, believers, Valets, etc. They fill in gaps in the crew's skillset, or allow you to succeed at cost if you fail a roll. Your Taker might not know how to hotwire a car, but one call to Greasemonkey the mechanic and you can. You can swap out References as needed, provided that you don't owe them.

Do you see this as being more of an episodic 'gamey' sort of campaign, with black humor but otherwise relatively lighthearted despite characters dying and all that - like those old Gone With the Blastwave PBP RPGs - or more of a narrative, gritty sort of survivor-realist campaign?

Definitely more of the latter than the former. While thereís definitely room for a bit of levity (after all, itís so much worse to see a crew mate eaten alive by Cs when you were cracking jokes with each other not ten minutes before), I would say this game is definitely on the more serious end of things. Iím not shooting for something hopelessly grim, of course, but a lighthearted romp through the apocalypse this ainít.

Also, @Octavian_5, do you see this as being a limited game where we all race to retire and FIN, or do you see this being a more long term sort of project where we bring in new faces as people retire?

I'm not going to be the intimidating type--and my retirement plan is the creation of a Marxist Utopia. But duplication isn't the worst thing that's ever happened. Play the character you want. If you dump Sensitivity and I get shot in the forehead, then...you know...it's bad.

Meanwhile, I saw Oddball once, but now I can't find her sheet. Where's she hiding?

She's a pretty stealthy character. But Octavian has a link of applications in the main post.

I added Intimidation as well, so I can handle all the social skills. But that doesn't mean that you shouldn't. Again, one bullet in the forehead and we'll need a new one.
