Zeitgeist: The Gears of Revolution (D&D 5E)

Zeitgeist: The Gears of Revolution 5E - Forum
Dungeons & Dragons 5e

Steam and soot darken the skies above the city of Flint, and winds sweeping across its majestic harbor blow the choking products of industrial forges into the fey rainforests that dot its knife-toothed mountains. Since the earliest ages when the people of Risur founded this city, they feared the capricious beings that hid in those fog-shrouded peaks, but now as the march of progress and the demands of national defense turn Flint into a garden for artifice and technology, the old faiths and rituals that kept the lurkers of the woods at bay are being abandoned.

The Unseen Court, the Great Hunt, and the many spirits of the land long ago conquered by Risur’s kings no longer receive tribute, but they cannot enter these new cities of steam and steel to demand their tithe. The impoverished workers who huddle in factory slums fear monsters of a different breed, shadowy children of this new urban labyrinth. Even their modern religions have no defenses against these fiends.

Times are turning. The skyseers – Risurs folk prophets since their homeland’s birth – witness omens in the starry wheels of heaven, and they warn that a new age is nigh. But what they cannot foresee, hidden beyond the steam and soot of the night sky, is the face of this coming era, the spirit of the age. The zeitgeist.

The Basics
System: D&D 5E
Themes: Steampunk, Investigation, Conspiracy
Number of Players: 6
Starting Level: 3
Application Deadline: May 31, 2019

About the Game
Starting Point: You are all new members of the Royal Homeland Constabulary (RHC), loyal servants to the kingdom of Risur. Your job is to protect the kingdom and it's people, and investigate and deal with any threats to their safety. Throughout the game your loyalties may be tested as you discover the underlying secrets and truths of the kingdom and beyond.

Setting/Campaign: This game will be based on the Zeitgeist: The Gears of Revolution adventure path. This is an entire campaign and I am looking for players who will be invested in a lengthy game.

One reason I love this setting and campaign, is that there’s a lot of room and blank spaces for us to world build together. I encourage everyone who applies and ultimately gets in, to help fill in the gaps and if necessary bend what’s in the setting. If it’ll make for a more interesting character or story, more often than not I will go along with it.

The Rule of Cool: The same applies for rules and mechanics. This game is NOT FOR RULES LAWYERS. As with the setting, if you want to do something that’ll add to the game, I will most likely support it. On the other hand, I don’t want things to get too crazy or gonzo. I’ll allow rules to bent, but don’t try to break the system.

Story Over Mechanics (No Munchkins Allowed): I am looking for players and characters who want to help create a memorable story filled with memorable characters. This means that characters shouldn’t be perfect and that they should have flaws. The mechanics should reflect that somehow and I don’t want to see a ton of min/maxing or crazy character optimization. This game will be about the conflicts, plot lines, and characters that we weave and develop together, not finding the most uber-over-powered-one-shot-killing-flaming-raging-sword-of-doom.

Post Expectations: Aim for 3-4 posts a week (roughly 1 post every 48 hours). Holidays and weekends will be flexible. Every post doesn’t need to be a novel, but should be more then just mechanics. Post should include what your character does, says, or feels with good succinct descriptions.

Communication: If you are unable to post, life happens, then please communicate it so we can keep things moving. If I don’t hear from you in 72 hours, I will take control of your character (or give it to another player). If there is no communication for more than a week then I will remove you from the game.

To help supplement communication we will also be using Discord (text chat, not voice) once the game is up and running (mainly for OOC and questions). Game play will still be PBP and be handled on MW.

Technical Information
Character Creation Basics: Please review the the character creation guidelines here before submitting an application. Explore all of the forum threads as well. I don’t expect you read and memorize everything that’s there, but it’s all designed to help in character creation.

Source Materials: all official hardcovers (except for Ravnica) and UA Ranger. Zeitgeist Player Guide (available for free) and the Artificer (KIbblesTasty). Both of these documents are linked in the character creation thread. Other UA and homebrew will be on a case by case basis, but will be very limited.

Ability Scores: Point buy 27

Alignment Restrictions: No evil; avoid chaotic (unless you have a really good character idea that still fits)

Please limit your submissions to 1 application/character.

How to Apply?
Review the guidelines and when you are ready, create a new thread in the applications folder to apply.
When you are done with your application or if you have questions, please post them in this linked thread.
You can also discuss your application with fellow players here.
House rules are here. Please take a quick second to review them as well.
Once you have a concept mostly fleshed out, you can also begin roleplaying here.

Interesting. One of the first games I ever played on myth-weavers was a Pathfinder Zeitgeist game, I played Sharea Dovanne in Cruzinlox' Zeitgeist. Unfortunately it died out after only a month or two, yet the yearning to find out what might have been is still there.

I will definitely apply. The character may end up being similar, but still a new creation with a new background and new affiliations.

EDIT: I just noticed that you intend to use voice chat... I am not into that, so, I won't be applying after all and wish everyone to have a good time! (Of course I figured that out only after I bugged my boss to use the office printer and printed the Player's Guide.)

@Feuerrabe I don’t mind if you recreate your previous character. Just make sure it fits into the new system.

@Feuerrabe no voice chat. Just the discord app as an instant messenger for OOC and if you have questions. The in game play will still be PBP
