Fairydale - Forum
Dungeons & Dragons 5e

Game Description:

Fairydale is a world inhabited by creatures, characters and magic from folklore, fairytales, mythology and fantasy literature (in the public domain).

Considering this is my first time DMing in this format, the campaign will try to mix everything: combat, RP and exploration pretty evenly.

The tone will shift with the party. It definitely isn't static. Probably not too dark and probably not too Disney.

I would prefer posts at least once a day, but I won't do much unless you disappear for a week without warning.

This campaign is mostly sandbox, so just explore and meet people and gods and monsters, maiming things if you want and hopefully trying to fulfil a plot. There's also a good amount of my own worldbuilding to tie everything together, so don't be surprised if you see anything like that.

All characters must be based off a character from a fairytale, folklore, mythology or fantasy literature within the public domain.

I would like 3-5 players.

Starting level is 1.

As for sourcebooks, I'm only using the basic DMG, PHB and MM as well as my own homebrew creations. If you want to do something from another sourcebook, you can, but ask first.

Use proper grammar and punctuation. The quality of the writing can be meh, but get the English right.

You'll likely begin in Grimmland, the land where most of Grimm's Fairy Tales take place (basically Germany). However, if it seems that almost everybody has chosen some Greek hero or a character from the Arabian Nights, I will change the starting location.

Ability scores will be point buy.

Remember, this is my first time DMing in this format.

Oh! Hey, this brings back memories. I used to DM a game like this once. XD

I'll throw my hat in the ring.
Where would you like us to post our applications in your game forum?
Would Xanathar's Guide to Everything be okay as a sourcebook?
What's the total number of points for Point Buy? 27?

hey! would you mind a newbie like me joining? i'm trying to get into this stuff and have pretty much read through the PHB, of course if you don't want me playing that's fine too. i understand that i would most likely get in the way.

Your character has to be based off a fairytale character. I'm sorry, I realised I didn't specify that in the original post.

I think a lot of my information vanished to somewhere.

Gods are not allowed. Demigods are, but no gods.

You are allowed to combine two characters as long as they're similar enough. For example, combining the woodsman from Little Red Riding Hood with the woodcutter from Hansel and Gretel to create the ultimate woodcutter character. Or combining every aspect of the stock hero Jack to make a character who climbed a beanstalk, jumped over a candlestick AND went up a hill to fetch a pail of water. Right, I forgot to mention. Nursery rhyme characters are also allowed.

If a character is unnamed, you have to give them a name. If the character is named, you cannot change their name. If you want to combine a named character with another named character (like the Moirai from Greek mythology and the Norns from Norse mythology who are fundamentally exactly the same), you just have to pick one to name it after.

I'm pretty experienced, but I would like to try something light-hearted such as this.

I can't for the life of me find an english version of a tale I have in book form. Supposedly, it's a chinese tale about a young hunter named Sung Lang having to replace the absent lord of rain to end a drought by riding his flying horse and sprinkling water from a magic pot, only to end up flooding the land and having to fix the mistake by retrieving a magic hand-mirror that shines hotter than the sun from a giant snake. He ends up marrying the lord's daughter and eventually becomes the new lord of rain.

I did find a transcript of the book online, but it's in italian. I guess they changed the tale so much that it has nothing to do with the original, though it looks like the chinese lord of rain does indeed create rainy clouds by sprinkling water from a magic pot.

Oh well, I guess Sung Lang would have been banned anyway since he basically becomes a god.

I have a couple characters already made for similar games. Would they be alright to use?
