Vampire: Masquerade

Los Angeles, 2018

One year ago, Los Angeles's already-miserable sense of security was shaken even further, when the upper floors of Venture tower exploded in the dead of night. Police ruled it a terrorist attack --the second within a week-- but rumors say that people saw a large, bat-like creature circling the top of the tower before the explosion. But the official story is that that's all poppycock.

Of course, there was a bat, what the supernatural elements of the city call the "Chiropteran Behemoth." Or, more commonly, "the former Sheriff." One year ago, a fledgling vampire who was unusually competent rocked the supernatural world, when she, essentially, wiped out the leaders of most of the supernatural factions in the city, without supporting any of them.

The resulting power vacuum destabilized the local community, and as a result, things quieted down quite a bit in the city, after the detonation of Venture Tower. But just under the surface, tensions run high. With no faction rising to the top, and everyone acutely aware that a fledgling caused the current state, new Embraces have slowed to a crawl, even among the Sabbat, and no one trusts those that are Embraced.

So, of course, you had to have the bad luck to be Embraced now, right?

Hello! I'm a first-time ST, looking for a few players for a Vampire the Masquerade, 20th Anniversary Edition game.

The game is set in Los Angeles, following the events of the Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines video game, specifically the Independent Ending, where (spoiler alert) the fledgling Player Character kills or causes the Final Deaths of most of the city's Kindred leaders.

Players take on the roles of newly Embraced vampires, dropped into LA with minimal to no proper education beyond "You eat blood now so don't starve to death." This is a game where you got shafted, and no one likes you or trusts you.

This is a game where the Masquerade is a big deal. This is a game where the World of Darkness is dark, even for the people who live in that darkness. This is a player-driven, sandbox game, where the PCs are encouraged to set their own goals and work towards them.

This is a game where the world won't go easy on you. If you get in a shootout in the streets, you can expect a heavily-armed SWAT team to show up. You might be a vampire but a vampire is going to have trouble with 10 or 15 officers, just from sheer numbers. If you Frenzy while hunting, and people see you, rumors will start to spread, and other Kindred will hear of your misdeeds.

And if you draw too much attention, the Society of Leopold might even make their own efforts to stop the dangerous monsters in their midst.

But if you play your cards right, plan ahead, work towards your goals, and (most importantly) keep me having fun, you might have a chance at making it through these difficult nights.

As a side note, there is one player, Gris, who requested a game of this style, so he has a slot. Besides Gris, I'll be taking four applicants.

Game Description:

Your last hunt.... whatever you did, it drew some attention. Not that you know what that is. No one explained any of this shit to you, and now here you are, a stake in your heart and a bag on your head.

You don't even know where you are. Tossed in the back of a van, and brought to this place. The bag is yanked off your head, but the stake is still in your heart. Can't take any chances, after all. Looking straight ahead (not that you have a choice) a well-dressed black man stands before you. He pauses at a few different angles in the room, including your own eyes. You imagine there are others, bound like you are. The man looks forward again, and speaks.

"Good evening. You all have caused quite a bit of trouble."

What the line on canon characters from the game? I'm thinking more the thin bloods on the beach than Nines, though Damsel would be cool...

When you say Bloodlines was a year ago, does that mean it's 2005 in-character? Edit - oh wait, I just spotted that it's 2018 in-character too. Good.

Oh, and when generating a Thin Blood character, are we using the standard numbers (7/5/3 Attributes, 13/9/5 Abilities, 3 Discipline dots, 15 Freebies) or the ones from The Time of Thin Blood (6/5/3 Attributes, 12/8/5 Abilities, 2 Discipline dots, 18 Freebies) ?

Are you looking for a coterie style game where the PC's band together in mutual support or will it be more four independent sandboxish storylines that may or may not intersect? Certain concepts work better for certain styles of play after all and not all characters are party friendly, either by accident or intent . . .

@Pink Jedi Ranger The only sourcebook allowed is the main V20 book, plus the Dark Ages 20th Ahrimane, so I'll be using the Fourteenth Generation and Fifteenth Generation flaws, plus the Thin Blood flaw, in the core book to represent thin bloods. Otherwise they have standard generation. I've already made the PCs start weaker than average (with only 10 Freebies and a ton of restrictions on Merits, Flaws, and Backgrounds), so I don't really need to weaken thin-bloods further outside those flaws.

@Cirlot The scenario in the Game Description will be roughly how the first thread starts off, so I am going to smash the group together at the start. But it's a vampire game, so I expect players to do their own things from time to time. Still, I'm leaning more coterie-ish than several solo games. Mostly because I'm not an experienced ST and I'm not sure how well I could track four solo games at once and how they interact with each other.

@TiffanyKorta sorry, I missed your question the first pass. Bloodlines canon characters aren't available as Sires, and I won't tell you what they're up to right now, because your characters sure as heck don't know, but half the reason I'm doing Bloodlines stuff is because I'm terrible at making NPCs, so if I can crib them from the videogame that's great. Many of them will probably make appearances, if you go to the right areas.

Yeah, I was most displeased that they didn't port the rules for Thin Blood Insight into the V20 Corebook considering all the extinct bloodlines and their Disciplines that they did include towards the end.

Anyways, at it's simplest, Thin Blood Insight is like the Malkavian Insight from Bloodlines except it only works on the past & future of vampires, including their fate come Gehenna potentially (and it's how Rosa, the Thin Blood Oracle "sees the end of all things; over and over until I cease to dream" and how she vaguely knows what's going on even if she doesn't understand everything she's seeing).

In any case, I understand not allowing it if you don't have the appropriate book for handy reference
