Your experience in enforcing the law, and dealing with lawbreakers, gives you a feel for local laws and criminals. You can easily find the local outpost of the watch or a similar organisation, and just as easily pick out the dens of criminal activity in a community, although you're more likely to be welcome in the former locations rather than the latter.

BackgroundVulcas's story and lot in life really starts with his maternal grandparents. His Grandfather Paymon Ammon pursued an Elven woman and while they loved each other, her long life and sense of duty to her responsibilities to her own people led her to leave Paymon shortly after giving birth to their daughter Isabella. Paymon eventually moved on, took a wife, and had a more conventional life.. while trying to steer his daughter clear of making the same mistakes he did. Isabella did however have a hard time growing up. She was officially a bastard, but was in practice her fathers favoured child which left her somewhat ostracised by her younger, more legitimate, siblings. By the time she had grown into a young woman Isabella had internalised the need to be an independent person, becoming a capable warrior and an aspiring and talented businessperson. Neither of these things protected her from the charms of the Minstrel. Paymon did his best to warn his daughter against the advances of of the travelling performer, but a few months after meeting him she realised she was with child. Her father was furious, the Minstrel seemed unconcerned, but within the day had vanished from Bards Gate and had not been seen or heard from since.

The baby was born without initial complication.. until the midwife picked him up to hand to his mother. She nearly dropped the child in shock at his temperature. When a healer was consulted they unformed Isabella that the baby had somehow been born with a fever and was unlikely to live through the week. Isabella clung to hope like any new mother would, and the babe lived through the week quite capably, robustly even. Once she was sure that he child would live, Isabella chose to name him Vulcas; a bastardisation of an old elven dialect's word for fire since he was still unusually warm despite otherwise being in perfect health.

Vulcas grew up knowing he was a Bastard's Bastard. He could claim noble lineage, but the upper levels of society merely tolerated his presence out of the need to not come across rude. Even Paymon only tolerated the boy for love of his daughter while quietly resenting him for representing how his father stole away Isabella from the life Paymon had envisioned for her.

By the time he was an adolescent Vulcas had learned to scrap as hard or harder then any of the other noble children his age, and to let their glares and whispered comments roll off his back. In fact he had come to not care to much what anyone had to say about him other then his mother since pretty much everyone else seemed to have it out for him. It was around this time that he developed an interest in himself. He was unusually hot to the touch, fire hardly burnt him and for a little over a year he had been able to call up small flames on a whim. When he expressed his desire to learn more about himself to his mother she was initially reluctant. She had told Vulcas the story of how she met his father, omitting only the Minstrel's name because she was quite certain it had been false anyway. For her that was the extent of it but when he insisted she arranged for him to meet with some more learned scholars she knew through her business contacts. It was through several months consulting with them, as well as auditing a couple of classes at the Bardic College that Vulcas was introduced to the study of the Arcane.. and then to the fact that despite his almost intuitive grasp of Primordial.. that he was unlikely to become an accomplished wizard. He had the mind for it but not the feel that truely distinguished masters of the art. He also had come upon a dead end as far as his search for information about his own background was concerned.

By then he was nearly of an age to be considered an adult and was generally expected to join his mothers trade businesses, something he found impossibly dull. Instead he joined the Gatesmen. After a couple of seasons that proved to be even more dull then shadowing his mother's trade deals had been. When he turned his resignation in to his Captain the man was unsurprised and suggested he try the city constabulary, even offering to put a word in with his sister - who was an officer with the Brownies. Life with the Brownies was nearly a perfect fit. Vulcas's keen mind left him able to reconstruct events after the fact, a skill he tuned and refined over several years working as a Brownie. Unfortunately his personal habits including a tendency to disregard the proper chain of authority as well as his choices of activities while off duty had a tendency to reflect poorly on the Brownies - who were already struggling to bring in patronage and funding from the cities nobility. When he began to pursue a noble he suspected of foul play a little to vigorously and without enough evidence it was unfortunately simple for that noble to put pressure on the Constables as a whole to get rid of him. He was left with a choice; resign or be removed. Vulcas chose to resign, promptly turning around and joining an investigation agency where he would be able to continue to employ his investigation skills.. and still giving him a somewhat legitimate reason to continue looking into his unfinished case..

Hey @bwatford I'm not all done with the mechanics, but I've cobbled together a background and would love to see what you think of it!

Please disregard...

@dunecat I have decided not to do reviews of applications prior to the ad closing due to demand and the number of applications now being received. I do encourage everyone to assist each other with feedback if they so choose.

That being said, let me know when this application is completed so I can mark it as such.
