Burnt Offerings Part I - Festival of Fire

The half-orc knew better than to try to chastise Shaataq. Though he was much larger than your average house-cat, he still shared many of the same mannerism of his smaller cousins, and it was simply intolerable to him that someone else was the center of attention.

When Chatahee walked over, Aggezar was lost in thought, trying to determine the best way to navigate the free food and drink the festival offered in order to maximize the volume he was able to consume. Start out with meats or with the denser desserts first? I won't have to wrestle with the cat over the desserts, though wrestling usually makes me hungrier. Hmmm...

Lost in his strategizing, Aggezar is unable to hide his surprise when the new-comer chose to speak to him, out of all those in the crowd. "Yes," he blurted out, not really knowing what to say, "it is." After a few self-conscious moments, he offered, "Aggezar," and extended his hand in the same way he'd seen many of the townsfolk greet each other.

Moving in closer to the half-elf, he whispered, as though afraid others might hear him, "I'm thinking of starting in on the meats first, particularly the curried salmon and peppercorn venison, then moving to the pies. I think I can manage one of the pumpkin AND one of the berry. After that, I figured I'd get down to business with as many potatoes as I can. Then, and only then, will I engage in the feats of strength. What do you think? Is your strategy very different?"

Chatahee shakes the hand he is given, finding an encouragingly strong grip. He grins. No-one else around here looked or dressed remotely like him, except for this half orc, not that being a half orc was a problem.. he being half and half himself.

"Chatahee, of the Giant Killers mercenary band, though I am not with them at the moment." he returned by way of introduction, looking at ease with himself in a way one would normally expect in an older man.

Aggezar's plan for the food, was once again, comfortable territory for him. A nomadic existence had bred in him continuous consideration of where the next bite of food and the next drink of water was coming from. Looking around at these 'rabbit folk', scurrying around their little burrows, he could tell most of them didn't feel the same.

"Your plan sounds good, though I'd go easy on the potatoes, make you sleepy and slow. Looks like the food around here doesn't have enough fat for my taste but looking on the bright side, the smoked, salted meat will keep longer in a bag."

"I'm thinking the young men with me will be more interested in the sweets, I'll scavenge what I can, let them scavenge what they can, and then I'll swap my desserts for their smoked meat."

In saying such, Chatahee considered himself far from honest. Disappointment with Shayliss had merely stoked the fires of desire within him.

"My friend, I realize that we are little more than strangers, though our blades and our bearing suggest that we are as brothers under the skin, forged in blood and fire and extremity of combat. But might I ask which gentle maidens within the town would cost me my life to pursue?"

Where can a man find a good mug of ale and a pretty warm body?

“The name is Jackson Ratarion, and yes I am original from Riddleport, Madam Mayor,” came Jack’s answer, but before he could finish the small talk with the mayor, she was already starting the speeches and he felt a pair of eyes staring at him, and he gave the sheriff his best disarming smile as he moved away from the platform and into the crowd to get a better view of the speakers.

As each one ended, Jack’s mimicked the crowd if they clapped or cheered, but as they finished and announced the beginning of the Swallowtail Festival, he looked around for where the large cat had vanished too. It had made a daring act by stretching on stage without a care of what the town thought of it, and as he scanned the crowd he noticed the cat standing next to a rather large half-orc wielding a polearm style weapon.

Well this will be interesting!

As he stared making his way over to the pair, a third party interjected himself into conversation with the half-orc, this one wielding a similar style weapon and he wondered if he had chosen the wrong fighting style all those years ago, which brought a chuckle to his lip as he came closer to the trio, “Excuse me gentlemen, the name is Jackson “Jack” Ratarion. It would seem that out of all the folks who’ve come to Sandport, that us four stand out like sore-thumbs, wouldn’t you agree?”

"Mmm... does that four include the big cat or not?", he says smoothly, looking Jack over speculatively. From there his gaze turns to the Nun close by. "If it does then we're more than likely looking at five."

Even as he is talking, he's glancing through the crowd, looking for women carrying books or with an air of education about them. Yep, definitely in the mood for a wizard girl or a librarian.

Snapping back to the immediate, he idly remarks.. "I'm looking for blade-work myself. Seems scarce hereabouts, all I've heard about is some boarded off haunted island where the deputies removed the stairs, apparently so as to keep the local rabbit folk from tripping over and hurting themselves. And of course Old Light... don't feel up to messing with ancient stuff though..."

OOCStarhawk: Titus Scarnetti was at the Plaza, escorted by a bunch of yes-men and bodyguards. The boys could point him out to you. It is Aggezar who stands next to the nun (Parice).
Zman: The name is Sandpoint... not Sandport... lol.

When and if the three of you go into the streets to hunt for food, you will find that the taverns are closed but the smell of baking and roasting is in the air everywhere as the establishments prepare for the big lunch following the butterflies release at noon. In the front of each tavern you can find stalls with snacks - mostly sweets and fried stuff.
If you head to the Market Square, you are called to join the games, mostly by groups playing tag-of-war and other games that involve the use of strength.

Agezzar smiles, and proudly pats Shataaq, "It always includes the cat!"

Frowning at the lack of food once they start out, the half-orc asks incredulously, "These people engage in their feats of strength BEFORE they fill their bellies?!" Confused, Agezzar whines, "This makes no sense. Come, let's best them quickly and be done with this farce."

Tag-o-War Contests!
The men contesting in Tag-o-War encourage you to join them, each team trying to get one or all of you to join them. You notice that the teams were not randomly formed just now. Rather the men in each team seem to know each other from their daily profession. This Tag-o-War game actually turned into a contests between different guilds and professions.

Sack Races!
If you feel like makin' a fool out of yourself you can join the men racing from one end of the Market square to the other while they are inside a sack. This is an individual contest... No teams.

Spartan Race!
A group of 6 women stand on wooden pedestals ready for this race. The race begins when 6 men (any of you may be one of them) race to the women, grabbing them over their shoulders, and then racing through town! The race takes you through Market Street, across the south bridge, then along the river to the north, back into town through north bridge, and back to Market Square through Festival Street. This is an individual race that requires luck, wisdom and stamina!

Chatahee joins the enthusiastic men from the Glassworks, thinking to stand out more, among what seems like the weakest group physically. The fact that they are richest and most skilled artisans of the lot also figures into his calculation.

Since Chatahee got 17 on his Strength check, the glassworkers actually got up to 21. Chatahee has the highest roll among them so he has the lead role (so its his 17+2 for glass worker 1 +2 for glassworker 4 = 21). The Glassworkers match with the Dokyard men and leave the carpenters guild behind.
There will be a rematch between the Dockworkers and Glassmakers!

OOCYou may roll a STR check for the rematch and I will add the post later.

Chatahee, very much into making friends and influencing folk, with his ability and forthrightness, as opposed to his innate charisma, spends time chatting with his new team.. the glassmakers. At the rematch he takes his shirt off, revealing the scars of combat, sucks in his cheeks to accentuate his cheekbones, stands straight to the full extent of his 6 foot frame, and flexes his powerful muscles..

"Alright, alright, alright... let's get this done." he drawls, exuding an air of quiet pantherish confidence, looking across at the dockwalkers as if they won't stand in his way.
