Art's brows furrow as he inspects the first scroll. On the second scroll, his brows soon unfurrow.

"I should like to hold onto these. One requires more study, the other would be... uniquely useful to a qualified professional such as myself."

He stashes both scrolls into his scroll case and packs it back away.

At the stairs, Art considers the party's position relative to the town of Sandpoint, wondering precisely where in town the blocked stairwell might lead. He then examines the rubble for evidence of how it collapsed, and to discern whether it's a recent collapse or not.



The Collapse
Awarthannen believes the party is somewhere below Market Street. The collapse is very old, and originally happened when the Thassilonian Empires fell thousands of years ago. Not too many years ago however, it collapsed further down the shaft, letting fresh breeze penetrate from above, and voices too if one listens carefully. Under the right guidance and control, it is likely that a bare handed mindless group of Sinspawns could have cleared the ruble and climb out into town if they worked together for a few days. Thankfully, there do not seem to be any Sinspawns left, and you haven't heard Erylium since she disappeared.

After informing the others of his findings and thoughts, he concedes aloud, "Perhaps now wouldst be a most opportune moment to return to town, alert the authorities, and contemplate our findings."

"Agreed," Lurr states, sort of blankly as she looks around the halls at nothing. "We need to get Jack back to the cathedral."

She swoops up the wine bottle and gives the rotting bird a kick. The bird flits back into the spherical room, and resumes it's listless floating. She smirks, and turns back the way they came.

Jack nods his head somewhat wearily. "I will not sleep tonight regardless." He observes. "But returning to Sandpoint now seems prudent." He notes.

He clenches the glowing gem in his hand and unconsciously runs the other through his hair. A shiver runs through him at the thought of what this curse may yet do to him and ads purpose to his steps back toward town.

The party leaves the catacombs and exits the Glassworks just as the sun disappears into the sea on the western horizon. With Jackson clutching to dear life and to the Dawnflower gem, you head towards the cathedral where Ameiko is still hospitalized. On the way there you stop at the barracks, and inform the officers on duty about your adventures in the catacombs. The officers decide to immediately re-block the entrance to the tunnel's and post guards at the glassworks to make sure nothing comes in or out.
At the Cathedral Father Zanthus welcomes you with a relieved smile. He is glad to see you returned safely from you ordeal, and suggests Jackson will stay at the cathedral for the night under the protection of the gods, while the rest of you take the rest of the night off to have a good and healthy sleep. His servants will prepare Chatahee's body for a proper funeral which will take place tomorrow morning after Jack's healing ceremony which he is preparing as you speak.

Before the day's endBefore Lurr, Awarthannen and Jackson leave for the inn, you might want to share with each other things you learned in the catacombs and make things clearer. Having an idea of what you are up against will be an advantage in the days ahead.
On the next day, Jackson will have to attend his ceremony right after sunrise. He will be fatigued from lack of sleep for the rest of the day, so it is up to you to decide if you hit the road to Thiseltop immediately or wait for the next day. Chatahee's funeral will also take place in the morning.

The following morning several events come to pass...

Father Zanthus performs the ceremony with Jackson and uplifts the vargouille's curse. Jackson is safe now, but will remain fatigued until he rests for 8 hours. The dawnflower stone is returned to the altar with great ceremony.

Shortly before noon Chatahee is brought to peace. His body is buried with great honor at the cemetery next to the cathedral, where many Sandpoint citizens come to share their respect to the fallen hero. After the funeral Zeno announces that he cannot take the stress anymore. Adventuring life, he says, is not for him. He'd rather be a carpenter like he father and his father's father before him.

Awarthannen meets with Bordret Quinck to tell the old man of your underground ordeal. Although the old scientist is excited about the news he cannot offer any new information. He can only confirm what Awarthannen already knew and understood. Like father Zanthus and the sheriff's deputy, he is most worried about the developments in the goblin's front, especially the rumors you brought about the new visitors to Thisteltop and Nualia's army.

After the morning's events unfold, Awarthannen makes his way back to the Rusty Dragon. Nondescript and hooded, he was most disinterested in being feared or stared at yet again for his odd appearance.

Hidden beneath his deep hood, the squinting gray man was engrossed in his own private thoughts as he walked. Pondering Tsuto's notes on Thistletop, of Nualia, and the impending assault, he mulled over every sentence, nay every syllable, in his mind with a fine-toothed comb so as to miss nothing. Calculating the probabilities of what it could all portend, he at last deduced the most probable scenario, given the current information available to him.

Oh, not about the battle, you see. The town and its fate were of secondary importance to him. Rather, he was intrigued by the mysterious power mentioned in Tsuto's notes. It's not that he doesn't care about the town and its people. Had he his way, he'd much prefer the largely ignorant rabble here stand their ground than it be assailed and replaced by goblin wretches. Yet his mind could not help but go over and over it, again and again... What was this "greater evil" beneath Thistletop? What power has Nualia found yet thus far failed to "free" in order to "add its strength to her own?"

'Perchance Thistletop conceals another remnant of Thassilon beneath it?'

The door of the Dragon closed behind him, Awarthannen removes his hood. He rubs his strained, enigmatic eyes as they adjust from the affliction of the noonday sun's garish light.

Art scans the crowd for his remaining companions, and takes a seat with them.

Seated with perfect posture, the elf glares uncomfortably at Jackson and Lurr before breaking his silence. Speaking to Lurr in particular, "The quasit's apprentice has 'silver hair' and 'violet eyes.' She has a 'celestial taint' she wishes removed through Lamashtu's aid. What might your religious training say of the nature of such a creature as Nualia?"

A chill runs through Lurr's body when Art talks of Lamashtu. "Pain and hate." Lurr speaks out cryptically.

She clarifies. "My goddess speaks of the Inner Beauty we all can find inside ourselves. It is up to us all to bring that inner beauty out, and share it with the world. Love and beauty flowing from the inside to the out." Her voice lowers, and an obvious discomfort comes over her. "Those who follow the Mother of Monsters wish to snuff out that inner beauty. They strive to pervert, twist, and violate the flesh - of themselves and others - and that perversion drives itself deeper and deeper, corrupting the heart, and spoiling the mind. Destroying beauty from the outside in."

"If this woman was as outwardly beautiful as Tsuto describes, a beauty that could be the result of celestial lineage, yet she turned down this path - then she has been truly hurt inside, either her heart, or her mind - or both."

"We should be careful. She is hurt, and a beast in pain is not to be cornered." She looks down into her mug, and quietly takes a sip, then looks up to Jack and Art. "I fear the three of us may not be ready to face someone in her state."

Feeling much like his old self again Jack is in a good mood despite the morbidity of the conversation. "Thistletop looks to a tactical nightmare." He notes offhandedly in an attempt to broaden the discussion. "The motivations of Nualia and her madness aside she has put herself into a formidable position. Logistically speaking that is." He observes.

"Getting onto and off of that island will not be easy." He suggests rubbing his chin and then shrugging his shoulders. "The bridge seems the best access point although it is undoubtedly the most obvious."

Returning his attention to his food for a moment he also finds himself somewhat distracted by Ameiko whom he keeps glancing toward now and then. "Um..." He suddenly frowns as something occurs to him. "I don't think we should allow ourselves to empathize with this woman. The nature of the malady consuming her is a tragedy perhaps but it is unlikely we will find a way to free her of it. Save for doing so through less ... diplomatic means..."

"Anyway." He says clearing his throat with a cool drink. "Just wanted to mention that... Don't want us to get caught up in thinking she can be saved or something." He confirms. "Our focus needs to be getting to Thisletop and eradicating the menace. Not to mention getting out alive of course.

As Lurr gets a couple of sentences into her talk of "love and beauty," Art at least tries to resist the urge to roll his eyes. But he doesn't quite succeed. He follows up with a reworded version of the same question, seeking a more specific answer this time. Judging by his expression, an answer preferably devoid of hippie-dippie "love and beauty" philosophy as well.

"You would require more information to discern the specific kind of celestial creature she might be, then? T'would be useful to better ascertain her strengths and weaknesses in advance."

He nods in agreement with Lurr's suggestion of needing more help. "Perhaps we might enlist the services of Miss Shalelu Andosana. Her knowledge of the region would be most useful."

Art concurs with Jack's assessment on Thistletop. "Indeed. Undoubtedly, there will be sentries as well. I can remain unseen for a sufficient moment. The arcana required to shield us all from visual acuity at once still eludes me, however. I'd expect little coordination or sustained effort from the likes of mere goblins alone. But with Nualia's leadership? Considering their successful raid and what we've learned of them since, we would be wise not to underestimate their alliance."

Concerning Nualia, he suggests a third option apart from her immediate death and her redemption. "We should seek to capture Nualia alive, if possible. There is potentially much to learn from what she has uncovered beneath Thistletop."

Art's enigmatic eyes light up at this point. His hands steeple before him, in a posture suggesting a dark plot is now afoot, "I expect she may have discovered more ruins of ancient Thassilon, you see. She may be useful to us alive. For a time, at least."
