READ ME FIRST! Character Creation/Adventure League Rules/Resources

Looking to get into a game? Please follow these steps and guides below:
  • See the FAQs for your initial questions but we are happy to help where we can.
  • Create a new thread in the AL Character Creation folder for your Character (use the "In Progress" post-prefix found next to the post title when you first post).
    -- If you use a custom formatted post for your character sheet, please also fill out the MW sheet to make it easier for us to verify.
  • Create a 1st level Character using the Adventurers League Players Guide (see below).
  • Add a post to your Character's thread with a Logsheet for them (see below).
  • Notify us that your character is Complete so it can be marked as such, reviewed, and added to a table. A post in the OOC is best, then all DMs can see you are ready and you will get reviewed quicker.

Most of the games are for new 1st level characters. A few are now accepting 2-3rd level and may allow you to bring in existing official AL Characters so long as you can provide past Logsheets.

Multiple Games in Progress

When a character is Complete and has passed muster (verified to conform to the ALPG) you may request to be added to any table with open spaces. Check out the Open Games thread for a list of active games and their status for players. When a table fills up a game can commence. If no tables have spaces then you can keep your PC in the AL Legal section until a space becomes available. All new spaces tend to get advertised in the OOC so make sure you are subscribed so as not to miss out.

Periodically we go through all inactive PCs and check that you still wish to play, if we get no response within a week we shuffle your app to the Dungeons, it can be retrieved on request. If your account has been inactive for over a month we may remove you. You are more than welcome back, just ask, we only do this to keep the forum tidy, it's not a banishment

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are a few questions pulled from the FAQ. Feel free to review the entire Adventurers League FAQ v3.

Can I use the Variant and Optional Rules in the PHB/DMG?
The only optional or variant rules available for use are:
  • Variant: Customizing Ability Scores (PHB)
  • Variant Human Traits (PHB)
  • Half-Elf Variants (SCAG)
  • Option: Human Languages (SCAG)
  • Tiefling Variants (SCAG)
  • Variant: Playing on a Grid (PBR)

Without specific campaign documentation, any other variant or optional rules, such as Variant: Quasit Familiar (MM) are not available for use.

What About Unearthed Arcana?
Unearthed Arcana isn't an allowed rules resource (see below); without specific campaign documentation it isn't available for use.

Do I Need to Maintain an Adventure Logsheet?
Yes, you must maintain a separate Adventurer Logsheet for each of your characters. This logsheet catalogs your character's progression throughout their adventuring career.

Poor_Knight's comment: No need for names and DCI #'s unless you want to make these official. Not sure they're required anymore.

Does PHB+1 Limit my Choice of Backgrounds?
No. You can choose backgrounds from any official rules resource (that is to say any resource produced by Wizards of the Coast or the Adventurers League staff). You are not limited to backgrounds from your allowed rules resources.

Am I Required to Have a Faction?
Factions represent groups with specific interests in our campaign. If you’re playing one of the character races provided in the Player’s Handbook, you’re not required to be a member of a faction, though it is certainly encouraged.

If, however, you’re playing one of the races from Volo's Guide to Monsters a faction is required. See the document for that product for more specific information.

Logsheet

Instead of the BB Code logsheet, many people have been using this website for the AL Character Log:
http://www.adventurersleaguelog.com/...haracters/6731

It's quite simple to use and is a viable option instead of the BB Code sheet below. If you use adventurersleaguelog.com be sure to link your Log Sheet to your character's post.

~~~ or ~~~
You should copy this Logsheet into your character's thread to track its progress. The top version is how it will look, the bottom is the code needed to create it. Copy and paste the code into your character threads. To keep your thread clean and tidy you can place each logsheet in spoiler tags.
Additional Information Season 7 Games Only
The following guidance applies to Adventurers League sessions run during Season 7: Tomb of Annihilation storyline season.
When is the Curse applied?
  • August 16th, 2017: The Death Curse is applied to all D&D Adventurers League characters playing a season 7 adventure.
  • August 25th, 2017: The curse expands to encompass all D&D Adventurers League characters.
    Word on the street is this was changed to only affect characters playing in Season 7 modules.
How can you get rid of the Curse?
Characters can be rid of the curse in three ways:
  1. Opting Out. Individual characters can “opt out” of the death curse’s influence once, but is restricted to adventures from storyline seasons 0 through 4. Once that character plays a CCC adventure or adventure from storyline seasons 5, 6, or 7, the curse takes effect, and this option is no longer usable; they must complete either of the two options, below.
  2. Completing Tomb of Annihilation. All of a player’s characters are freed from the effects of the curse upon that player completing the final chapter.
  3. High-Level Play. Players can free their characters from the curse by participating in Tier 3 or Tier 4 adventures. Players exercising this option can’t return to Tomb of Annihilation with any formerly-deceased characters. Which character is freed depends on what the player plays, as follows:
    • Season 7 Adventure. All of the player’s characters are freed from the curse.
    • Non-Season 7 Adventure. The character playing the adventure is freed from the curse.
What are the Curse's effect?
The below effects of the curse are in addition to those provided in Tomb of Annihilation:
  • Characters who have previously been returned back to life find their hit point maximum reduced by 1 each day at midnight and at the beginning of each non-DDHC adventure. The adventure starts as the curse has been active for 20 days—thus any previously-dead creature subject to the curse finds their maximum hit points reduced by 20 at the onset of the storyline season. This reduction can’t be increased or restored.
  • Characters that spend downtime find their hit point maximum reduced by a number equal to the number of days spent.
  • In addition to raise dead, resurrection, and true resurrection, reincarnation won’t return the dead to life—the soul remains trapped and the spells automatically fail when cast.
  • As raise dead, resurrection, and true resurrection don’t work, faction charity is unavailable.
What Else?
When WotC releases more of the content officially, we'll update this post. Games that have a start date prior to the Curse effective dates will not be affected. Games that start on or after the effective dates will be affected as per the rules.
Before asking to be reviewed here is a checklist for your application and character/log sheet of the most common things we DMs have to comeback with when reviewing.
