Game Description

The village of Hommlet has grown up around a crossroads in a woodland. Once far from any important activity, it became embroiled in the struggle between gods and demons when the Temple of Elemental Evil arose but a few leagues away. Luckily for its inhabitants, the temple and its evil hordes were destroyed a decade ago, but Hommlet still suffers from incursions of bandits and strange monsters.

-"The Village of Hommlet," Gary Gygax, Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Module T1, TSR Games, 1979

I propose a rather ambitious undertaking which I will call "The Great Greyhawk Campaign." It will use 2nd Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons rules, but will include the following original 1st Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons modules (which I will convert to 2nd Edition rules):

  • T1: The Village of Hommlet (1979)
  • T1-4: The Temple of Elemental Evil (1985)
  • A1: Slave Pits of the Undercity (1980)
  • A2: Secret of the Slavers Stockade (1981)
  • A3: Assault on the Aerie of the Slave Lords (1981)
  • A4: In the Dungeons of the Slave Lords (1981)
  • G1: Steading of the Hill Giant Chief (1978)
  • G2: Glacial Rift of the Frost Giant Jarl (1978)
  • G3: Hall of the Fire Giant King (1978)
  • D1: Descent into the Depths of the Earth (1978)
  • D2: Shrine of the Kuo-Toa (1978)
  • D3: Vault of the Drow (1978)
  • Q1: Queen of the Demonweb Pits (1980)

If completed from start to finish, this campaign will begin at first level and should end somewhere around fourteenth level. Needless to say, the campaign could last years in real-life time.

I actually own all of the original books listed above, so the adventures will unfold just as they did back at the beginning of the Dungeons & Dragons era.

The only book you will need to play is a copy of the 2nd Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Player's Handbook. If you don't have this, but are interested in getting one, I'm told they can be found for fairly cheap on amazon.com and ebay.com. Otherwise, there are apparently "retro-clones" called For Gold & Glory or Myth & Magic available online. These are welcome to be used in the absence of the "2EPHB," but that book will always trump in the event of a rules conflict.

In terms of character creation, post any interest below, along with race/class/concept, that you'd like to play and we'll go from there. All characters will start with zero experience points and will be comprised only of races and classes in the 2nd Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Player's Handbook (that is, we won't use the "Fighter's Handbook," for example).

In terms of what I look for in players, I prefer strong writers with good daily posting ability and, for a campaign like this, the ability to stick around for a while. I'd like to start the campaign with between six and eight players.

I will close the "application period" on August 25, 2012, with a goal of beginning the actual campaign on September 1st, 2012.

I believe that, if successful, this campaign could prove a truly, er, well-weaved myth, so to speak. In starting this journey together, we'll be embarking on the same sort of adventure of imagination that was undertaken by the very minds that created Dungeons & Dragons! Indeed, we'll be exploring the actual labrynths, caverns, mountains, and forests created by the likes of Gary Gygax, David Cook, Tom Moldvay, and the other men who gave us this game.

So, who will join old Sam Crow for the journey from the Village of Hommlet all the way to the Demonweb Pits?
