Game Description

Heaven and hell suppose two distinct species of men,
the good and the bad.
But the greatest part of mankind float betwixt vice and virtue.

David Hume

In Varisia, the birthplace of legends, an ancient evil stirs. Its dreams reach far, and are full of malice. Its hunger is endless, and if unstopped, the world, your world, might perish in a storm of fiery vengeance.

As is the custom, only a small band of brave heroes stand between civilization and nameless doom. Will they be able to protect Varisia from an old nemesis? Can they stop the sundial, before shadow falls on Golarion? Will they stand united against the wave of darkness, or will they end divided and conquered?

Fantasy literature conjures the time when the fate of mankind balances on knife's edge. Avid readers have followed the companions take the burden of the ring and face Sauron. And countless epic campaigns have forged the image of fantasy gaming. Senior gamers have ventured into the Temple of Elemental Evil, braved the Giants and fought the Queen of the Spiders or found the Rod of Seven Parts. These classic campaigns are the stories told recounted in forums and home groups alike, tales that are passed from one generation of gamers to the next.

I invite you to embark upon such an epic journey with me. A very special one, actually: Rise of the Runelords is a super-sized epic, in that it stretches from level one to fifteen or higher. And it includes events that can be described as world-shattering.

I have to warn you, though: I will make this an extremely dangerous journey. The storyline of the campaign is ground-breaking, and I intend to have this be a credible threat, as you literally watch as the earth breaks beneath your feet.

As always, I'll adapt and expand upon the official campaign, making sure your party faces a matching, and exceptionally tough challenge level. Thus, contrary to what may be a first impression, there is no need to optimize much. In fact, I expect survival to be easier for well-balanced characters than for one-trick ponies. Moreover, I'd rather enjoy a great background, in-depth roleplaying with elaborate posts and exciting storytelling.

And all our yesterdays have lighted fools

The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle!

Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player,
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,
And then is heard no more; it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.
