Game Description

The Chiron Sector

System: The Stars Without Number faction conflict system. The overwhelming bulk of these rules can be found in chapter eight of this free pdf. Some house and procedural rules will be outlined in the forum.

Style: This will be a PvP enabled sandbox game. Players will take control of the various factions that hold influence over the Chrion Sector of Terran space. These factions will often take the form of planetary governments, but can also include powerful trade conglomerates, vicious pirate gangs, influential religious movements, or any other organization that could influence things on a planetary scale.

Setting: This game will be intentional setting light. This is because the players will basically be generating the setting with their actions and responses. The following is brief summary of what lead to the current state of the sector.

Aided by powerful psychics derived from experimentation on human genetics, the Old Terran Empire proliferate throughout the stars with unprecedented speed and prosperity. Highly advanced, psychically empowered jump drives allowed colonization, commerce, and conquest to spread at a speed nearly 10 times that of the outdated spike drives used in ages past. Mankind's potential seemed to be almost limitless.

This all changed with the Scream. The Scream was an intense wave of psychic energy that emanated from an unknown source somewhere near the center of our galaxy. As it washed over the worlds of the Old Terran Empire it rendered all psychics brain dead, or worse, insane. This virtually paralyzed interstellar travel and communication as the few spike drive equipped ships still in operation where located in the furthest reaches of the empire not frequented by larger jump drive equipped vessels. Deprived of their regular shipments of food from agricultural planets the core world are presumed to have starved. Many other worlds had all the elements needed for continued human existence, but lacked the fossil fuels or radioactive materials necessary for high technology. These worlds fell into primitive states of existence, sometimes even forgetting or distorting their high tech ancestry. In the 600 years that followed the more self-sufficient frontier sectors became the new hubs of human civilization. The Chiron Sector is one such hub.

The Goal: Players should not consider the supremacy of their faction as their only goal. The ultimate goal of this game should be to create an interesting and dynamic story about factions vying for influence and, in some cases, survival in the burgeoning age of a New Terran Empire.

I have not used this system in this way before and I am sure that, like most systems, there will be certain combinations of strategies and assets that will prove stronger then others, in some cases possibly unfairly so. Please do not make it your goal to find and exploit these imbalances to the detriment of the story.

That being said, it should be noted that this game, like life itself, will not be fair. Some factions will begin play less powerful then other and might face restrictions that will put them at a disadvantage. The players of these factions should not consider themselves condemned to irrelevance, but challenged to greatness. I eagerly await under-dog factions rising to power and prevailing factions falling by the wayside.
