The year is 20XX.
Since its inception, the Internet has exploded to a point where almost every electronic device, from supercomputers to toasters, has been linked with the giant, global network. Humans, with the use of the devices known as Personal Terminals, or PETs, have been imbued with invaluable partners known as Network Navigators, or more simply as Netnavis or Navis, that can traverse the network and allow for ease of access for all. However, with the great convenience this age has ushered in, new dangers have surfaced as well: viruses, hackers, and other forms of net crime have also seen a dramatic rise.
Over the years there have been many large-scale incidents involving the network, many perpetrated by the infamous World Three organization, more commonly known as the WWW. However, time and time again these acts of terrorism were thwarted by the efforts of stalwart youths, spear-headed by the now famous Lan Hikari.
Now, the network enters a changing era, as the once leader of the WWW establishes his Iris and Colonel programs in order to stabilize the network and make it safe for future generations.
In the wake of these changing times, a new conglomerate has taken the stage. Known as the Kidou Company, this group has almost completely monopolized and standardized the PET market and upkeep of the network, allowing even the smallest child to have his own personal Navi without the necessity of the extensive programming knowledge that was once a requirement for such luxury.
But what is life without conflict? Even now, new threats loom, and even the legendary Lan Hikari cannot be everywhere at once. Who shall take up the mantle and work toward a peaceful future?
