Game Description
Bycydorn's School of the Arcane Arts
Setting
Londlund
, a world that has forgotten magic...
The shadowlands of Nup located east of the mountainous kingdom of Rang are wild and untamed. A lazy river runs from the mountains of dawn in the east, northward to the Sea of Cala through the moors of Catun and the giant burgundy woods of Gnostwood Forest. The sparse villages along the banks of the river make up most of the inhabitants of the vast regions of Nup save those that dwell in the centrally located dwarven city of Catun, center for the logging and mining industries. Those few denizens of Nup are descendants of an ancient race of seafairing dwarves, though the technology and means of long sea voyages has been lost. The dwarves all refer to the winding river as "Dragon River," though dragons have been unseen for at least a millennium.
One village, Lond's Run, stands out from other riverside villages as the home of a special school. A school for the gifted. Master Bycydorn, a wizard older than the towering burgundy wood forests of Nup, takes in orphans. Gifted orphans.
Magic has faded from the face of time and the inhabitants of the realms have not seen a fireball, illusion or even a simple levitating cup in generations. Religion has gained a choke hold on the hearts and minds of this world and magical outpourings are not well received. The worshipers of Pelor in the expansionist empire of Ael commonly practice sacrifice of those who show magical inclination. The mountain kingdoms of the elder races of Rang have lost all connection to magic and place their trust instead in the power of industry and holding back the onslaught of Ael. It seems the world has lost all understanding of magic.
It is this reason perhaps why
Master Bycydorn
has chosen to locate his school for the magically inclined in the far wild land of Nup. Here among the morland dwarves, one can live a simple life, far from the iron fisted rule of imperial Ael and the mountain strongholds of Rang.
Every student at
Bycydorn's School of the Arcane Arts
is magically inclined. Many are orphaned, and all revere Master Bycydorn above all else. They also know his love and his compassion. The world beyond the Mountains of Dawn and Gnostwood Forest hold only rejection, scorn and heartbreak. Bycydorn's school is a place of safety and understanding.
Here your adventure starts.
General Info
The elements of this game are a mad mash up of many genres of fantasy. DnD 3.5 is used for all mechanics and statistics. For things such as alchemy and dragon lore, I pull heavily from The Elder Scrolls. I use the political climate and visual style of the Witcher book series when imagining this world. Aspects of Bycydorn's School of the Arcane Arts borrow heavily from the Harry Potter series as well as Kaer Morhen from the Witcher books. Naturally, the Lord of the Rings movies play a role conceptually as well. If the thought, "Hey this reminds me of Hagrid from Harry Potter" enters your mind, you are most likely spot on. And that is intended.
I have a very free and open approach to PbP GMing. If you conceive of a town for your player background and it does not conflict with anything in the game, then it will become an official part of the game. You as a player have the freedom to help create content in the game. This goes for character names, aspects of lore, geography and cultural tradition and so on. I am your guide, but you as the player have a lot of responsibility for and freedom in the creation of this story.
I would like to have players that want to average 3-5 posts per week, but as with all other aspects of the game I will tailor the posting rate to your needs and mine as life allows. I am an English as a Second Language and World Studies teacher in Hawaii and I understand the need to balance DnD with RL. My goal is to create a game that encourages player investment and long term gaming. I am looking for players who enjoy character creation and action scenes, but are passionate about character development, role playing and creativity.
