Shattered Kingdom
The Nation of Anselem has been ruled by the bloodline of Revan for three centuries, after Arcturus Revan united the thirty clans and dynasties of the land. He united through force when necessary but also by promises of defense from threats of foreigners across the sea as well as a rising supernatural threat through thinning borders with the spirit world.
His grandson Geralt slew the last dragon and created the weave that strengthened the border between worlds. Arcturus the Second son of Geralt lead the Crusades that purged the darker spirits and creatures from the land leaving a land where mankind could sleep safely.
There has been a decline in the last several generations of the family and many of the clan heads have begun eyeing up nearby lands to seize as their own rather than bow to the Revans any longer.
The Renegade lords found their chance when Gamel Revan and his family were killed by a violent spirit incursion in the capitol before it could be put down by the defending forces. With that spark all the formerly unified clans splintered and started looking out for their own interests and some building armies with the aim to control the nation much as the Revan bloodline had.
The last chance for peace was your lord Hadyn Genault cousin of the late lord Revan. Hadyn along with several of his close allies had built a web of further ties and deals that would keep the peace and keep the clans united as one nation but his control was far weaker than he had thought and assassins came for him and his forces were destroyed by or absorbed by his enemies. His dying words to you were to save his son back at home, and now you must escape the madness in the wake of betrayal as the nation prepares for war
