its the year 2790, an event known as the great scream killed off half of the galactic human population and removed any traces of ways to reach the inner core worlds of the former United Colonial Protectorate, including earth. The remaining planets have split from the once over-arching UCP into sector-based governments. You are in Sector Valkeran, one of the frontier sectors of the former UCP.
Sector Valkeran is run by seven corporations, each CEO and his executive staff forming a council which decides sector-wide policy. Underneath them are the governors, who govern an entire system with the magistrate responsible for planetwide government. This is where you are from. You all grouped up, and have purchased your first ship from Eridani Systems, the pre-eminent ship manufacturer of Valkeran. You've purchased a Free Merchant, a type of light frigate. You took out a loan with 20% flat interest, a pretty good deal.
