Far From the End of the World
It wasn't too long ago that people couldn't remember what happened. An event otherwise known as the End of Earth. All manner of things from massive solar flares to pulsar gamma waves had been pounding on the planet and its inhabitants. With only ten years left to decide the human race's fate, the Earth's Governments had started ambitious projects to see them live another day.
Three Colony-Class vessels left Earth that fateful day. Filled to the brim with every survivor they could find, with at least one representative from every country they could reach in time. The President of the United States, The Prime Minister of Great Britain and the Prime Minister of Russia all made tearful speeches as humanity had left the only home it had ever known.
As the ships passed Jupiter on their way to clear a path for their jump to FTL, it happened. Off in the distance, in a great flash of light and bright ball of flame, the Earth's atmosphere was blown away like dust and the surface scorched black. Humanity watched on in horror as all life on the planet was snuffed out in an instant. Mothers and children cried, while every man hung his head in shame, everyone wondering what went wrong.
But there was hope! Top secret files had been brought out of the dark. Alien life had existed after all! They knew humans were finally venturing off into the sea of stars to find a new home. Instead of humans being alone in the Universe, they had allies... or at least others they could rely on.
The only thing left to do was find a suitable planet to colonize and terraform.
