In lieu of introduction...

It is well past midnight, and although your contact is more than an hour late, the wait is hardly unpleasant. You don’t remember the Acropolis being used for Elysium for more than a decade. The view is as impressive as always.

Turning to marvel at the ancient temple of Athena, you make out the approaching silhouette of a woman in a white dress. She moves with silent footsteps, her figure short and lithe. Her pale skin contrasts with her black hair, and you instantly recognize her from the description you were given. This must be Persephone. Fittingly, she shares her name with the mythological queen of Hades.

”If you were waiting for a more impressive reception, I’m afraid you’re 2500 years late.” she half-jests, as she approaches your small group of neonates. She urges you to follow, leading you towards the temple. ”Even the eldest of our kind don't remember the golden eon of Pericles any longer. You will nonetheless discover that, despite the ravages of time, the past is ever-present here. A shame we don’t have much of a future to offer the mortals.”

She looks at each member of your group, trying to guess how much you know already about the situation in the city. ”I suppose you read the news just like everyone else. You know how bad things are here. The government’s not likely to last past winter, but that’s no surprise considering it's founded on shaky alliances and unrealistic promises. The country’s a dept colony in all but name. The youngest of the kine know this, so they’re abandoning the sinking ship, as rats tend to do under such circumstances. At the same time, refugees from war-torn Syria and beyond arrive at our islands daily and by the hundreds-those that don’t end up at the bottom of the Aegean, that is. Quickly they discover they are unwelcome and unwanted. Here in Athens, vigilantes from up-and-coming neo-fascist parties are on the prowl every night, hunting down anyone of a darker complexion in the slums of the city. In turn, self-proclaimed anarchists, who understand as much about ideology as your average football hooligan, make a sport out of burning down press offices and randomly killing policemen. But racism is not only alive in Athens. It is resurgent throughout the continent, thinly veiled and scarcely contained. Nationalist parties such as the National Front, Ukip and our very own Golden Dawn are all too happy to jump on the euroskepticism bandwagon. Who knew that the lessons of two world wars would be so quickly forgotten?

But come. Today you will all be formally introduced to a very special club. There’s no need to be that bleak. Besides, wherever there’s turmoil, there are also opportunities to be had, and the times are nothing if not interesting…”
