The year is AD 2015.
It is a world very much like our own. Facebook, Twitter, hybrid cars, smartphones, tablets, terrorists and corruption - all the things we love and hate about our world are the same there.
But there are differences.
At night, strange abductions, disappearances, and deaths puzzle and perplex the police. Mysterious occurrences and impossible wonders happen daily, just out of sight, where only a small handful can see them.
Most people never learn about these things. They will grow old and die having believed their world bereft of mysticism, save for the scriptures of their favorite holy books.
But there are some who learn the truth.
Changelings. Ordinary souls, taken from their old lives, twisted by exposure to the True Fae and made more elfin for it. The lucky few escape, returning to the realm of normal humanity after the world has forgotten them – and in groups, they band together, to protect themselves against the Keepers that pursue them, and the superstitious mortals that mistrust them.
Mages. Men and women granted a glimpse of a fantastical, and sometimes dangerous, world beyond the boundaries of understanding. They etched their names into the soul of the world, and in so doing became tied inexorably to it. But this power is far from tamed, and arrogance can be a mage's undoing – to say nothing of the machinations of their ambitious fellows.
Sin-Eaters. Souls destined for death, but who defied its call, binding themselves instead to strange and mercurial spirit-beings – their Geists. The mark of death remains with them, and from it they may draw strength – power over the living and the dead, yet with it an obligation to protect the boundary between those worlds.
They live lives much like ours. Where we struggle with mundane worries, they face pains supernal and extraordinary. But like us, in spite of the pains and hardships they face, they can find happiness. They can learn to accept what they are and what their lives have become.
