Humanity had never been the most sturdy, or agile, or the most beautiful. They are not even the most humble or practical. In terms of raw ability, they are out classed in both their physical potential as well as in terms of magical aptitude.
Above all else, they are among the most short lived.
Many of the long lived races have viewed humanity as nothing more than a cosmic joke. Alive only long enough to know what they want, before dying a bitter death without having ever accomplished anything.
However, that short life span is actually the key to their power.
The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.
As limited as humanity is, no other race is as desperate or reckless in the pursuit of these limits. They strive to achieve as much as they can in the short, few years they have. Humans are the innovators, the achievers, and the pioneers of the worlds.
They build lasting institutions to pass on their knowledge to future generations. They build off the works of their predecessors. Some spend their entire lives trying to unravel just one secret of the universe, but then the next generation takes that discovery and uses it to unlock yet more mysteries. They constantly seek to hone their techniques and refine their knowledge, only passing along the most effective and efficient means to accomplish their goals.
They do this all for the sake of fitting more and more into their short lives.
No, they are not the only race to pass on knowledge to their young, but no other race cycles through generations as fast as they can. Thus, that short life span is the key to their evolution.
When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong.
Humanity in its perpetual arrogant youth constantly challenges the world around it, always expecting something more. The other races live long lives, they grow comfortable with their accomplishments. As civilizations, they stagnate and get set in their ways. Meanwhile, humanity constantly reaches for new heights, as the next generation is raised to surpass the last.
Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
As humanity continues to grow and change, they begin to change the world around them. With the latest innovations of man, the world will never be the same again. Now begins the Age of Mortals.
