Game Description

Tianxia: Blood Silk and Jade

Legends of Kung Fu is a rotating GM game using Tianxia: Blood, Silk and Jade, powered by FATE Core. Using the setting from the book, the empire of Shénzhōu and specifically the province of Jiāngzhōu and city of Băo Jiāng as our primary location.

The feel of this game is more Kung Fu than Wuxia. Focusing more on Kung Fu schools, rivalries and local trouble than sweeping epic, mystical tales. Think Fist of Legend or really any Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan movie.

Everyone will be expected to run a Session within each season (story arc). A session is 3 to 5 scenes. Each Season will have a general theme set by the Season GM that season, which we will take in turns acting as. Season GM may run first and last Sessions.

Without further ado:

Legends of Kung Fu

Our protagonists are Martial Artists in the Kung Fu driven city of Băo Jiāng, the jewel of Jiāngzhōu in west-central Shénzhōu.

The community of Wu (warrior class kung fu practitioners) is large and varied in Băo Jiāng. Traditionally run by a council of grand masters, elected by masters or better every five years. The last 15 years has seen a breakdown of this council as one point of the five-pointed star has fallen away. We are in "The Time of Four Lords" and there is no longer a balance to the yin and yang, but conflict.

The time of election is another year away and things have grown dire. There is a corruption of Chi in the community that seems to be hampering growth and mastery of kung fu, and strife between schools is reaching an all time high. Our heroes are all interested in "Restoring Order and Solving the Chi Corruption."

Most skilled warriors (and all our heroes) frequent, once invited, Faultless Wu's Tea House. A grand Tea House for kung fu warrior's who only gain invitation from a respected member. Their is a strict non-violence policy that nobody dares break. It is in essence sacred ground to warriors deemed worthy enough to enter. Faultless Wu is a master purported to be flawless at any style he has learned, and he learned them all.

Very few are ever invited to the upper room, where it is rumored that an ancient Faultless Wu, having mastered life extending techniques still resides.

Our heroes have been invited to the Tea House for the first time. It is very rare for non-masters to be invited to the Tea House. Even more rare for them to be called to the upper room. The doddering old, nearly senile master informs you that you show promise, and that a corruption of the chi in all of Shénzhōu has occurred, stemming out from Băo Jiāng. Your growth in Kung Fu shows you have a resistance to the darkness. He believes you to "One Of The Seven Order-Restoring Dragons". He will ask for your secret assistance in uncovering and combating this darkness over Kung Fu in the land.

Faultless Wu
High Concept: Ancient Flawless Kung Fu Master
Trouble: With age comes knowledge, but that means there is a lot to forget...

Faultless Wu can serve as our "Fixer" for lack of a better term. He can be used to send our heroes on our missions, quests or even just mundane errands for him (maybe he wants fresh moss from the highest tree on nearest mountain, maybe its just for his tea, maybe for some mystical purpose). This gives us an easy way to make the adventures happen with a common hook, which can be hard in rotating GM games.

Tea House

This just serves as a safe haven and place to regroup or begin missions. I picture nothing fancy, and nothing is charged for. A place for (generally) masters or better to gather on neutral ground.

Season One
Since this game was my doing, I'll take the role of Head GM for season one and do the wrap up episode. We've previously discussed that we want to save moving to the rank of Master (Kung Fu rank 2) to season 2. So, I've built our first season around the premise that something is hindering advancement.

Any sessions around the investigation of Chi Corruption or dealing with the lack of Order among the Kung Fu community are great hooks for this season. I'll take what we've run with and wrap them up (and hopefully tie more than some of them together at the finale).

Some ideas:
  • Two rival schools are at the point of almost having street wars. Our heroes must diffuse it
  • Orphans (or homeless) are being kidnapped and their Chi harvested, who or what is doing it?
  • Ingredients need to be gathered for a Chi strengthening potion to add to the city's springs
  • Something or someone dark is contaminating the city's water with Chi corrupting magic?
  • The police force and army are on the verge of declaring martial law, the one behind it must be convinced otherwise or stopped.
  • One influential master stands in the way of an upcoming tournament, find out why and correct the problem (blackmail? kidnapping? magic? vampires?)
  • The heroes are poisoned!? They have a very real timeline to complete a task for the poisoner to get the antidote in time.
  • River pirates are kidnapping and smuggling out promising Kung Fu students, stop them and figure out where / why / for who they are taking them
  • IMPORTANT Leave questions open, like "who is the dark force working for?" open for the wrap up. Your antagonist could be taking advantage of the Chi Corruption and perhaps not behind it, or are they?
