I'll count my blessings while I still have them - none of them were so big or so powerful as Adam, and they didn't cause quite so much disaster when they woke up. But there were just so many, and those were only the ones we knew about.Nerv was never meant to handle something on this scale. The idealists over in HQ were hoping their little Angel would draw all the others to them, turn a global war into a series of home turf skirmishes. That never happened. With Angels raising their ugly heads all over the world, Nerv had to step up Project E and its Mass Production subdivision, churning out half-baked Evas as quickly as they could cobble together whatever spare parts they had lying around. It was nothing if not desperate, but it worked. For a while. Turns out that fielding an army of superpowered alien cyborgs only works as long as they listen to you. After the last active Angel went down, the MP Evas (we call them Empies) turned around and tried to finish what the Angels started. It was something like a hive mind, all those Dummy Plugs networked together trying to kill us all. The regular Evas we had dispatched as unit commanders got stabbed in the back by their own platoons, so for a while it seemed like we were completely screwed. But somehow the reserves managed to turn back the tide and send the Empies packing. So here we are in the middle of a three-way war. It's quiet now - it's been six years since an Angel woke up, and no one knows what the Empies have been up to since they disappeared back in '21. But none of us have forgotten that they're both still out there, and that they have us on the brink of total annihilation. We need to be vigilant. We need to be prepared. We need you." --- The Commander of Nerv-Alaska addresses new recruits. |
