For more than three thousand years, the Alliance of Worlds had expanded steadily, assimilating cultures into itself peaceably and, having obliterated their fleets, graciously refraining from conquering those races which initiated hostilities against them. Fully a fifth of the galaxy could be said to comprise their territory and the civilization was at a stage where there was no longer any possibility of disaster. At which point, their borders touched upon those of the Empire and the Shattering War began, serving as a brutal reminder that nothing is invincible.
Had it not been for the matching signatures of their ships, the Alliance would have thought they were facing a multitude of enemies, for there was no other similarity between the invading fleets in strategy or design. As swiftly as it began, this terrible conflict ended and the invading fleets were replaced by solitary emissaries in tiny shuttle-craft without escort by so much as a single fighter. It took quite some time before these ambassadors were actually met by Alliance diplomats and the reason behind their appearance is still unknown.
Although technically there have been twenty years of peace since the end of the war, few can forget the horrors they experienced and there remains widespread distrust of the Empire, especially considering the horrific casualties suffered. Now, rumors of Alliance vessels along the border, effectively reduced to wreckage and with the only survivors driven to madness or catatonia, are spreading through the population and with the situation as charged as it is, the top priority is preventing another war from breaking out.
