Game Description

Helix City Ghosts

Helix City. Built on a small world light years from humanity’s home solar system. It began as a series of mining outposts, established centuries ago to exploit the deposits of rare minerals and other resources on the planet’s surface. Once, it proved to be a profitable enterprise, but the expenses of transporting the materials proved too high, the mineral deposits began to run dry, and many of the corporations funding the project backed out, leaving the staff and colonists to fend for themselves. This is a bleak city of misplaced optimism.

Factions have formed in the intervening years. A political and military stalemate has evolved, where organizations and mega-corporations hoard and grudgingly trade resources and technology in an attempt to control the population and influence the political landscape. Access to technology and resources has become heavily regulated, creating a war for control of both. All the time, the corporations watch for a break that may tilt the balance of power in their favor.

The factions themselves are not the wholesome corporations they once were. Their distrust has led to the use of some extremely unorthodox methods, always keeping the power and control among a select few. Centuries of interbreeding, mass cloning, genocidal class cleansing, sterilization and other spiteful operations have all contributed to shape a race that can only tenuously be labeled 'Human'.

After two hundred years of isolation, the inhabitants have become both morally and genetically corrupt. The prevalence of cybernetic technology has led to a trans-humanist movement. Some use this ground breaking technology to improve their lives, while others use it as a new form of body modification art, creating an underground sub-culture. Little will motivate these souls, save for a few common desires: To obtain wealth, power, or independence.

Those with the drive and determination can make a good living, whether they work as mercenaries, or become entwined in the ferocious power struggle that has emerged from the ever-growing social tension. Information, thoughts, feelings and rumors are echoed around the city by the neutral but informative Hardwarp FM, the expansive, planetary HINet system that exists parallel to the city as its own cyber-reality. For many, it is a way of holding onto sanity. For some, it is an addiction. But for others? It's an opportunity...
