Once upon a time the world was full of color and magic, blessed by a god who people now only know of as The Painter. One day, The Painter suddenly and inexplicably disappeared, but as he was known to go on adventures or paint in reclusive spots his followers barely noticed this disappearance. However, over the years people began to notice that the color of the world was slowly draining away, and once powerful mages and demi-gods lost nearly all of their mystical powers. Eventually, almost all of the color in the world faded, leaving only dull remnants. It did not take long for the world to fall into chaos, and the law of the land fell to the law of the sword. Hundreds of years later, the land stands divided between the Seven Kings of Tarsus. Any land not owned by the Seven Kings belongs to part of the Wastes.
Recently, a rumour has spread through the kingdoms like wildfire: a traveler has come to the tiny town of Red Gate. They say the traveler speaks of a land behind the Wastes, where vibrant colors and magic still exist. He whispers in reverent tones of an artifact that still echoes with the power of The Painter. In a rush to claim the artifact for themselves, the Seven Kings have each marshaled a cohort of the willing, the desperate, and the mad and struck out for the town of Red Gate, each intent on gaining the knowledge of the artifact's location and a way to cross the impassable Wastes.
