Numeria. A barren land inhabited mostly by monsters and barbarian tribes, it is a difficult place to make a life. There are few reasons for civilized folk to venture this way, and even fewer to live there. However, there are stories: stories of ancient artifacts that can perform wonders without the use of magic. Of strange automatons that roam the towns and cities of Numeria, both humanoid and not. Of Numerian Steel, a series of rare metals with incredible properties that make up the bulk of the country's trade. Of the Technic League, a cabal of magicians who seek to understand the wonders that dot the landscape. Some of these tales are fiction, nothing more than the usual exaggeration that occurs as stories are passed along. But many are, in fact, true.
And it is within this country that you find yourself. Maybe you are the latest adventurer, brave or foolhardy enough to come chasing the possibility of wealth. Perhaps you are a native, one born and bred in this harsh landscape with the guts to leave behind your home and go forth to make a name for yourself. Or maybe you are one of the people who has heard the stories of ancient wonder, and has come seeking a greater understanding of life and the world around you. Whatever the reason, you have made your way to Torch, a large town built around it's namesake, an everburning violet torch that occupies the top of a large hill, and one of the few flames hot enough to melt the "skymetals" that make up Numerian Steel. As such, it is the only place to work the metal outside of the capitol of Numeria itself, Starfall. This reason alone is why the traders and traveling smiths continue to pass through, and why the town continues to exist.
Which is why the town is in serious jeopardy when the violet flames suddenly go out.
