EXPERIMENT 19166

Hell is nothing like the paintings of old, be they biblical or mythological in origin. No, hell is dull and grey. To feel the licking heat of flames across my ankles would be a mercy, for with them would come a sense of self and the pain of knowing my feelings are true. To hear the snickering voices of the devil's flock would be music to these ears, perhaps words I might understand. It has been weeks, perhaps even months since I've heard, seen or touched another living soul. My hell is an enclosure of neutral grey walls, a tattered foam mattress upon which I sleep, and in the corner a cracked handbasin and ceramic latrine.

I own a stomach that aches with hunger, groaning in protest. A meal hasn't arrived for days now, and I'd finally grown accustomed to the food. Three servings a day delivered, a shrink-wrapped parcel that slides to the floor through a dark and angular slot in the wall. At one end of my hell lies a door, a metal rectangle that refuses to resonate no matter how hard I slam, yell, hurl insults or knock at it. I don't remember arriving through it, nor do I allow myself to expect to leave through that way.

So I sip of the bland water from my faucet, and lie down. I think of who I used to be and those I've left behind. With every breath I admit defeat. I promise myself to no longer ask myself the irritating questions that this hell so easily summons. I give up.

CLACK!

In a cold sweat I awaken to stare at the solitary incandescent light above, tucked into a prison of its own behind thick wire mesh.

CLACK!

The sound comes from the door. I dare to stand and raise a hand against it, and give it a push...

Key game features:
  • Set in the modern world, present day Earth, with a twist of fantasy. We are using D&D5e rules and incorporating Draco Homebrewery's Modern Handbook to cover modern equipment / setting etc where required or relevant.
  • This will primarily be a story and collaborate writing project, rather than a traditional game. The impetus will be on character development, relationships and personalities.
  • Themes covered will include imprisonment, anguish, self-discovery, mystery, exploration, horror / science fiction and survival.
  • Our intention is for the project to run long-term, with an expected posting frequency of 2 posts per week (just let us know if you need a break / time out at any point). Writers can opt for leading roles, or if you are less available we can tailor a "supporting role" for you. In honesty, the pace will likely be "slow", with plenty of time to think and ponder upon your future progress.
  • Well-considered and posts of depth preferred over quick one-liners. Spelling and grammar is important, but creativity is above all else. The focus is on writing, storytelling and fun, rather than "winning".
  • This is not a scripted adventure, nor is it a sandbox. It is a concept with ample space within it in which characters can effect the lives of others, the outside world, and determine their possible futures. Actions will have implications. Details will be important.
  • Your character's history and previous life-experience is up to you. In the early stages it will be all you have, so go deep with it. If sections need to be written out as things progress, then so be it. There will be plenty of opportunities for players to contribute as NPC's in other people's pasts, flashbacks etc, as well as their primary characters.

Inspirations: We won't be drawing concepts intentionally from other media sources, but it is worth noting that if you've ever wanted to write in a setting or with a flavor that is Half-Lifeian, Day of the Triffidsish, or even Mad Maxian, then you might find yourself right at home.

The Beginning: Assume that you won't know your exact location. You won't have communicated or related with another person for an extended period of time. You have the clothes on your back and the memories in your head, that's it.

Game status:

We are currently seeking character applications, as we will work through the first batch of submissions and plan their parts in the story to come.
