[1 Mission Play] Frontiers of Nature: Restore The Cities
In a time where humanity retreated into city-states as nature, amplified, encroaches and retakes the land, sea and air, you will be at the forefront of a nearly impossible goal --- bring human society beyond mere survival, and thrive again under its own powers.
While politicians, military commanders, and community leaders each in their own way rally the citizens to participate in this goal, you take a different path.
Because you are a B.R.A.T -- a Border Recovery Auxiliary Trooper
With your armored battlesuit, and your unit, you will step back into the hazardous wilds...
...and recover the borders of human civilization.
- WORLD -
At some point, the environment became so inhospitable, it was no longer sustainable for large countries and companies to operate. Society organized itself into city-states when governments and corporations collapse, leaving behind smaller entities that pick up the pieces. Most people retreated into walled cities, domes, caverns or underground vaults. The less fortunate struggle in fringe communities, enduring elements, bandits, and being caught in the occasional low-intensity conflicts as city-states vie with each other for water, arable land, and mines.
During the environmental upheavals, scientists report sightings of abnormal evolutions of species among the flora and fauna, speculating that the harsh changes to the environment and the lack of original habitats had triggered genetic changes within. The animals and plants grew bigger, aggressive, and smarter. Soon, cities came under attack not just from enemy states and bandit raiders, but also natural wildlife that are encroaching onto new prey grounds.
The sky is a seething mass of charged ionic particles and scorching rays, rendering electromagnetic radiation erratic and long-range communications unstable. Cities never developed beyond their own boundaries out of poor organization, and messenger caravans are constantly attacked en route. Flight is unfeasible, and aquatic vessels fell prey to the giants of the deep. Human territory became relegated to shrinking land surrounded by megabiomes and battlefield graveyards.
Several strong city-states are still fighting ferociously, with borders constantly shifting. The most powerful military hardware are sent to the front lines, with secondary units protecting the cities and their dependencies. But a much smaller group of soldiers are sent into the wilds and uncharted lands beyond basic radar range, mapping out places of danger, or more importantly, finding or creating new lands for the cities to expand into. The immediate threat is to protect what few we have now, but the long term ambition is to carve out new areas. This is where the BRATs come in.

- THE EXPEDITION -
Of all the services, the most complex is the mission to expand the borders of the city-state, needing to penetrate into mutated wildlife, fend off brigands, and establish lines of trade and communication to settlements you discover. If they prove difficult, you will instead mark them as areas of conquest for larger armies. You are fielded with the most basic of the armored infantry suits, the BRAT, or Border Recovery Auxiliary Trooper suit. It is a battlesuit meant for multipurpose expeditions, outside of most installations or outposts range. You are not rated beyond standard-issue arsenal and utilities. Those are exclusive to active duty advanced assault elements.
Your objective is to suit up and form a squad to penetrate into lesser known territories. You are not meant to stay in city-state regions, nor willfully invade other competing occupied zones. Those are the duties of the main army and the vanguards. You are auxiliary, and you are meant to recover or take back the borders from the uncharted. You are neither military nor mercenary --- you are operators sanctioned for opening territories in the wilderness for city-state expansion.
All operators are volunteers either from the uniformed services or private citizen registrations. Your commission can be arranged from cities, outposts or affiliated settlements in allegiance with your city-state, and your topographical findings will be sent back for study and inclusion in the expansion plans. Operators are given priority access to food, life support, and the permit to upgrade your modules with relevant available facilities.
Your unit, comprising 3 to 5 Troopers, have been tasked to range out and find an abandoned walled city. Control revisited past communication logs and determined there were three possible known cities based on the City Computer .
