Oh Children of the Stars, Heed My Call

Anyone who wants to be anyone knows that the path to glory is the path of a Pilot: the glory of combat, the glory of discovery, the glory of wealth and power. To change the world, to change the universe, one must don the armor of giants.

You've done it: you've passed the exam, and been accepted into the Anima Academy. Legendary Pilots have walked these very halls; hit the books, solved school mysteries, fought in Mecha tournaments, delved into the mysterious alien ruins beneath the school. They've graduated, and gone on to win wars and push the boundaries of the universe.

What will you do when you become a Pilot? When you become like a knight of old, a wanderer with the power to make a change? Where will you go in the universe, and how will you clash with powerful forces?

Key Features of the Setting:

  • A hopeful future devoid of petty things like prejudice. People fight for things that mean something: resources, status, power, faith, etc.

  • Exploring a universe full of aliens, wonder and adventure

  • Waxing philosophical on the nature of the cosmos, and on hard decisions that will have an impact on many lives

  • Joining sacred hunts for great beasts; tracking them down, learning their behaviors, and coming face to face

  • Our characters follow their own personal journeys as a team, starting at the Anima Academy where you'll learn to be Mecha Pilots

  • Over time, the forces of the Faceless Lord will begin to interfere with our lives, until by the end of the campaign we'll be forced to face him

How often will we be in Mecha?

  • You'll start without Mecha for a bit

  • Then, you'll be given training Mecha

  • From then on, ideally we'll spend about half of each adventure in Mecha, half outside

  • Some adventures may be spent entirely on foot, others spent entirely in Mecha; as students, it may be more often on foot

This is a "Co-Op" Fate Game

  • There is no Game Master

  • Instead, we work together to describe the world, brainstorm NPCs and plot on the fly, and occasionally ask for help from some random tables

  • Mostly you will post as your character; sometimes you will post descriptions of the environment, or roleplay as an NPC

Fate is a fiction-first RPG where roleplay and description come first, the dice only when they are needed. It is a 100% free game you can find the SRD for online at fate-srd.com. The Co-Op idea was inspiration taken from Ironsworn, another free game you can find at tomkinpress.com.

How to Apply

  • The setting has it's own wiki: Character Creation will guide you through it quickly and efficiently

  • Once you have a solid character concept, copy the Character Sheet Template Code from the Applications tab and start a new application thread

  • Answering these questions may help: why does your character want to be a Mecha Pilot? Who or what will your character miss the most from back home?

  • Focus on your character's primary motivation or ultimate goal: what is the first step on their personal journey? Write down 1 adventure-worthy plot point that will drive your character to make a hard decision with multiple choices and lasting consequences. For each Plot Point you resolve, you earn a Milestone

  • The bare minimum application is a High Concept, a Trouble, a backstory, and your first Plot Point

  • Deadline: End-of-Day November the 29th (2 weeks from ad opening)

Optional: Human Isekai Archetype

Destiny is such a strange thing, isn't it? One day you're going about life here on planet Earth, never knowing you might just wake up transported to another world. There's no rhyme, no reason: just spontaneous, life-changing transformation. Now, trapped thousands of years in the future, your only choice is to adapt, and to learn. Maybe one day you'll find a way back, or maybe you'll never want to go back home.

Key Features:

  • An option for if none of the alien races interest you, or for any other reason

  • If you're considering this, do not go to Character Creation: check out the Playable Races first and then decide, or simply avoid the wiki altogether

    • The Skills entry will still prove vital, however; your character has 20 Skill Points to use to build their Skills

  • You and your character will be experiencing the world with fresh eyes; every piece of lore you'll have to find out through gameplay

  • No one will speak your language at first; for a good while, only a few other characters will be able to communicate with yours

Isekai Character Tips:

  • What connection does your character have to their homeworld? What would make them miss Earth after being transported to another world?

  • What is your character's conflict? Is it internal or external? What feature of the new world can act as a reflection of your character's conflict, forcing them to work through their issues in the form of an analogue?

  • Since you'll only begin to gain sci-fi tech and abilities once you enter the other world, you'll have to start by relying on your character's core traits and human resilience:

    • Perhaps your character is a good leader who can rally their friends when they are shaken, granting a bonus to Anima to remove mental afflictions and Create Advantages in the face of overwhelming challenges?

    • A highly empathetic character might have a Stunt for making good first impressions, so that they can quickly build a network of contacts and favors in this new world.

    • A highly deductive character might have a Stunt for quickly identifying the traits of new creatures, environments, etc.
