Butter Princess: A Game of Indulgent Doom
Overindulge at the state fair as you plot to seize control of a 90-bound butter sculpture. This is a modern horror game with a dark streak of surreal humor throughout. If going to a state fair sponsored by David Lynch with Werner Herzog as your tour guide sounds like a good time, this might be for you! Uses rules and mechanics from Trophy Dark.
Players should be excited about leaning into:
Details of the Minnesota State Fair: Be prepared to do a little background reading or keep some browser tabs open to bring flavorful, relevant details to your character and the game
Tragic Horror: Your characters are doomed by their compulsion to seize control of the Butter Princess; most will lose themselves to the fair, and those who survive will be forever changed. We want to wallow in their motivations, their failings, their obsessions.
Surreal Humor: The horror in Butter Princess will veer into the outrageous and darkly humorous: butter golems, fair food induced body horror, terrifying brand mascots; are you shuddering with laughter or terror?
Story Game Mechanics: Dice rolls in Butter Princess have significant and serious consequences, but they are more often about answering the question, "What happens next?" than, "Does my character succeed at this task?" Players will frequently be expected to flesh out the setting and game events by answering GM questions; they will also offer each other Devil's Bargains that give bonus dice in exchange for having specific, game-changing things happening in the fiction. This game will use a lot of "Hard Framing" of scenes, where the GM describes a situation you find yourself in at the fair instead of offering an open choice of where to go next.
