Into the Shadowlands
Into the Shadowlands
An L5R 4th Edition Play-by-Post Campaign Set in 1168 IC
The Year is 1168, under the reign of His August Majesty Hantei XXXVIII. The Empire of Rokugan stands as it has for over a thousand years, its Clans ever at odds in courts and on battlefields, yet united under the Jade Throne. And yet, beneath that unity, something festers.
At the close of the most recent Winter Court, held at Kyūden Hida, the unthinkable happened: an incursion from the Shadowlands. It was brief—swiftly repelled by the Crab—but the Emperor himself witnessed the chaos and the horror, and he did not dismiss it as an isolated act. No longer content to rely solely on the duty-bound Crab Clan, an Imperial Decree was issued:
“Each Great Clan shall provide one vassal, pledged by their Champion, to serve on the Kaiu Wall for no fewer than twelve months. These chosen shall live, train, and fight alongside the Crab Clan as defenders of all Rokugan. This is no punishment, but a service of the highest honor. Let those who serve return with strength—and understanding.”
📍 Location: Shiro Kaiu & the Kaiu Wall
You begin your service at Shiro Kaiu, the legendary fortress-engineering complex that anchors the Wall itself. You will be stationed at various posts along the Kaiu Wall, a towering marvel of defensive architecture that spans the southern border of the Empire like a stone spine—the final bulwark between Rokugan and the Shadowlands.
Whether you are Crab-born and now tasked with guiding these outsiders, or a samurai far from your familiar lands and customs, you are all now bound by duty and Jade to face the unspeakable horrors that lurk beyond the Wall.
🏯 The State of the Empire (1168 IC)
-
The Hantei still rules from Otosan Uchi, but his health and mind are waning. Whispers of succession stir.
-
No Spider Clan exists. Daigotsu leads the cult of Fu Leng from the shadows, but he has not yet emerged to claim legitimacy.
-
The Shadowlands grow restless—more organized, more brazen, and more coordinated than usual.
-
The Crab are overextended, losing more territory than they can reclaim. The Hiruma lands remain overrun.
-
Tensions simmer between Clans over the decree—some see it as an insult, others as an opportunity.
-
The Taint is spreading in subtle ways: strange dreams, outbreaks of violence, whispers that shouldn't be heard.
🎎 Your Role
Each player is a sworn samurai sent by their Clan, or a Crab assigned to train and guide the others. You are expected to:
-
Defend the Wall
-
Participate in patrols and counter-raids into the Shadowlands
-
Learn to work together under the command of the Crab
-
Make offerings to the Fortunes, the Kami, and—if desperate—the Kuni
-
Survive
You may be a bushi, shugenja, or courtier—but out here, your name means little if your blade falters.
Note: There will be a lot of combat... while a good 'face' in the group wouldn't be a bad idea, if that's the focus of your character, you might be underwhelmed by your role.
Now that that's out of the way, my advise on your character build... Play your absolute favorite character in L5R, even if it's the Courtier. Don't focus on Shadowlands in your build... Shugenja with all the right spells for vs taint will feel meta-built, and less likely to make the cut because I won't choose based on the best characters, I'll choose based on the most love of the character. Make me feel the love.
Lastly, I love homebrew... alternative path, advanced schools... love it all and there aren't enough, so chat me up on that. Kiho? Kata? Absolutely (especially if you have the advantage for it). Build something you'll love. I'm not easily convinced that people love to play a Crab... so if you're aiming to play one, show me that you've loved that clan for years. Munchkin/min-max? I don't mind... L5R isn't THAT abusable... so sure, Isawa Shugenja, Hida Berserker, Dragon Tattoo Monk, Mantis Archer, Kakita Duelmaster... all acceptable.
