Night Below: An Underdark Campaign

GM Morphling · 4/5 players · posts Weekly

This is the classic AD&D 2E Night Below campaign converted to GURPS 4E and using every Dungeon Fantasy supplement available. I do not possess GURPS 4E revised, so if there are any clarifications or rules present in that edition that aren't in the old 4E and you think we should use them, let me know. I am very curious about the revised editon. The game is ostensibly set in Greyhawk, but that's not going to come into play very significantly and the setting might end up being heavily modified (for example, I will allow you to create your own deity for your character to worship instead of using a Greyhawk one).

One core component of this game is diplomacy and making allies in unusual places. This doesn't mean that everyone needs to be a silver-tongued bard, since heroic deeds can win you allies just as surely as honeyed words. Rather, it means that the characters with the best chance of success will have an open mind when it comes to accepting help and a willingness to turn even the strangest enemies into at least temporary allies.

Haranshire is a peaceful little barony, where the people are happy. Their coexistence with the goblins of the hills and the lizard folk of the swamps is uneasy thanks to past hostilities, but under the protection of Count Palfrey and a trio of mysterious yet heroic rangers, peace has finally settled in. But in recent days, not all is well in Haranshire. Signs of a darkness creeping over the land go unnoticed, and evil is left to fester. When a group of young adventurers pass through on unrelated business, they are quickly sucked in. Will they prove to be the saviors that this world so desperately needs, or simply corpses destined to be dragged down into the Night Below?

Game Length: This is an entire campaign consisting of three parts. I cannot responsibly estimate how long it will take to complete, but probably a year at bare minimum.

Characters: Young adventurers. Your character may have plenty of talent and/or well-studied but should have little in the way of practical experience. You might only be in it for the money at first, but the premise of the campaign involves acting for the greater good without any real promise of reward. Something that I never see but would like to is a healthy rivalry amongst the characters. If your character has above-average wealth, charge a premium when other characters ask you to sell loot on their behalf. If your thief finds a tiny but valuable gem that they could easily pocket without anyone else noticing, go for it. You can bet I put it there just for you, just like I did the holy weapon for the Holy Warrior. If the party wants your heavily muscled Barbarian to carry all their loot for them, make them pay for a frame backpack. Hell, make them pay to hire you as a porter. You get the idea. Of course, you might decide to select disadvantages that would prevent your character from behaving in this way, but if not, why not?

Note on character creation for new players: If you have little or no experience with GURPS, I suggest you just describe your character to me and let me create them for you, letting you approve the sheet when I'm done. I can't honestly say that GURPS is a newbie-friendly system.

Post Frequency: Being very experienced in GMing PbP, I know better than to go in with firm expectations of posting rate. That being said, my policy is to wait about 72 hours between my posts and then do my best to move the game ahead regardless of whether everyone has put in their piece, even if it means temporarily taking over a character to have them take an action during combat. Players that go for extended periods of time (my discretion) without posting or notifying me of absence will be removed from the game and a replacement will be sought.

Post Quality: Sometimes a one sentence post describing your character's action is sufficient, but players who do only that need not apply for this game. Generally, I want you to use your posts to help bring your character and the world to life.

Technology: This game will use Discord for OOC communication to help speed along the game. You may join the Discord before you are accepted and are highly encouraged to do so as healthy and frequent participation in the game's Discord is a major green flag when it comes to accepting players. The Discord server is here, please set your server nickname to your MW handle to avoid confusion. This game will also use the free GCS program for character sheets found here. Use of GCS is optional but highly recommended. It's easy to learn, it's frequently updated, and oh yeah, it does your math for you. No AI content of any kind, be it art or writing, is permitted.

Important: This game is explicitly welcoming of LGBTQ+ players and characters, as well as any and all other minorities or marginalized groups.
