Planechase 5, Race for Immortality

GM Tibbysaurushex · 6 players

Travel through infinity in a "Race around the world" style scavenger hunt and discover exotic beings as you compete against other players to be the first to claim the ultimate prize, a place among the gods! Immortalization in it's most fabled and fantastic form!

Welcome to the 1st ever, bi-millenial Planechase Games!

With the Omenpaths open and the Multiverse feeling closer than ever, one interpricing figure has stepped forward to host a most splendid event. The God AO has begun spreading the message of their first-ever inter-planar competition. In these games, creatures from all over reality will compete with one another to solve puzzles, discover clues, and overcome deadly foes and challenges in the hopes of becoming the first to reach "The Pinnacle".
What's the Pinnacle, you might be wondering? An artifact purported to possess the ability to grant any before it divinity. God-hood was the prize, all you had to do was strike out and seek it!

What this Game Is:
A competition of sorts. A friendly one, no stress. Players will take on the role of one of any number of Planar denizens from the Magic: The Gathering franchise. While making allies, building an arsenal of powerful spells, and growing your skills and abilities through trial and tribulations, you'll explore myriad realms and exotic locations in the bid to earn the ultimate prize. Divinity and immortality! Way better than any dusty-ol Planar Spark. I couldn't find an appropriate system tag, and went with Miscellaneous because I wanted to try my hand at running This System Here. The game is something between rules-lite and freeform, and has a fairly interesting mechanical application where in you use existing cards from the franchise to create your character, build your list of spellls and abilities, and determine skill and combat out comes. Give it a read if you're interested please.

How will this work:

Play-by-post on these forums. Each of you will make a character using the provided ruleset (Free PDF available), and the following guidelines. Once your character is finished and approved, they'll be dropped into a random point in the multiverse and be expected to fight for survival. The game isn't purely combat based, so there will be the usual 3 pillars of any good RPG in play; Exploration and Roleplay will be as present as conflict. If your character dies, don't worry! You can always roll up a new one and rejoin the fun and chaos!

Lastly, feel free to team up to take down the competition, but be aware now the ultimate "End game" of this scenario is for ONE competitor to be crowned the victor. So alliances may not last. And bonds may well be tested.

Character Guidelines:

Create your character(s) using the provided ruleset, and the following Guidelines please!

  • Character's can be any humanoid race, not just Human (3 Limbs minimum, 4 ideal, 6 Maximum)
  • When creating your character, select a Plane of Origin for them. This can be any from the provided list at the end of this post.
  • You can choose any appropriate creature or spell card within the above guidelines from Your Plane of Origin or Any of the Bolded Planes on the list. If your character is not a native to their Plane of Origin, explain why in their backstory.
  • If your CMC is 2 or less, begin play with 1 additional Spell (CMC 2 or less), and 1 Treasure token.
  • At least One of your spell cards must come from your Plane of Origin.
  • No Planeswalker Cards/Legendaries.
  • One Equipment Artifact of CMC 3 or less in place of one of your starting spells.

Rule Changes & Clarifications:

Additionally, the following rule changes are in play.

- Planeswalkers are not Gods, and the rules for worship and abilities for such apply only to creatures you encounter with the God type.

- Planeswalkers you encounter or defeat can not be added to your Character Card. Instead they are saved in your "hand" as a permanent ability you can activate based on their Loyalty to you

- Treasure Tokens will be rewarded as I see fit. Not based on rescued NPCs or other factors. If there's a treasure in the environment, or you find/steal/sell/whatever something that has value, that is just a few ways to earn cash.

- A single Character Card (Creature's, enchantments, and a few others) can be added to your character at each level. So level 2+. Other cards can be kept as spells, allies, weapons, etc. Character Cards will be added through specific challenges and identified as such.

- Creature cards not added to your character can count as Allies or  Summons. Allies you control must not exceed your TALE in any single encounter. Summons have Summoning Sickness and are not allowed to Attack or activate abilities on their first turn (without haste).

- Deathtouch can be flavored as Venom, Poison, Magic, or some other form of wasting/slow dying. If the CMC and Current Hit Points of a target of Deathtouch is less than the Users Level ,you may choose to instantly kill them with your attacks.

- Your Hand is your person. Not a place or location, but you physically. If something is "In your hand" it's a part of your characters mind (Spells/Information), inventory (artifacts, equipment, tools, etc) retinue/party (creatures or the like) or their person (Enchantments and other effects)

- The Graveyard in effect simply means anything in the scene that's dead (not undead/or a spirit), destroyed, spent (Spells, enchantments, etc) or otherwise no longer active in the scene. Not a literal graveyard or plane of the dead or a demiplane.

- When a card instructs you to search or interact with your Library it simply means to take cards out of your Reserve List (more on this later)

- Indestructible DOES NOT mean you can not be defeated, simply that your physical form can not be destroyed and even at 0hp, you will get up again. (The why is up to you and the flavor of what's granting you indestructible)

- Starting Hand Size is equal to your TALE - CMC (Minimum 3)

Annnnd...That's it I think. Ya. Oh! Below you'll find the List of Planes of Origin you can choose from (or roll randomly on). Cards you choose at character creation can only be from one of the Bolded planes or your Plane of Origin.
