Reign of the Lich King

“This 5.5e D&D campaign takes place in Azeroth, aka the World of Warcraft! In this "what if" scenario, the Lich King has won the war in Northrend, though a few desperate survivors of the Horde and Alliance expeditions remain to oppose him.”

As the Lich King, Arthas Menethil once led the undead forces of the Scourge on a campaign that would have overrun the world. Had the Horde and Alliance not journeyed to Northrend to oppose him, all of Azeroth might have been lost. Thankfully, through the heroic actions of the world's champions, the Lich King was dethroned and all life was spared the curse of undeath.

But what if one key moment had gone differently? What if Tirion Fordring was killed before he could come to the aid of Light's Hope Chapel when the Scourge first attacked? In such a timeline, the Death Knights never would have been redeemed. The Ebon Blade and the Argent Crusade would never have been formed. And without their strength added to that of the Horde and Alliance, the Lich King would have won...

Hello, and thank you for your interest in this campaign! The game will feature two parties of 5 players each: 1 Horde and 1 Alliance. The action will take place entirely in Northrend, and gameplay will favor exploration and combat. The style will be largely open-world sandbox, with no linear path or quest-givers to tell you where to go or what to do, and so ideal players will be those who can make decisions and drive the story forward on their own. Don't expect me to be holding your hand, as I will be busy trying to kill you.

On that note, there are two things all prospective players need to be comfortable with. First, the game will be PVP flagged, meaning conflict between players will be allowed. I don't expect players within the parties to be killing each other, but if the two factions come into contact, that's a different story. Second, when it comes to encounters, the DM's gloves will be off and no punches will be pulled. So have a backup character already in mind, just in case.

If all that sounds rather harsh, welcome to Northrend! The tone will be rather bleak. This is not the pun-filled cartoony Warcraft where orcs dance like MC Hammer. This is the version of Azeroth where all hope has been lost and life itself hangs by the thinnest thread.

And if you're wondering, you do NOT need to be a 20+ year veteran of WoW or the RTSs to enjoy the game, as the setting and story will be very focused. There is a lot of lore to Warcraft, but much of it will be effectively ignored due to the nature of the game. But for those who are interested in learning more, I've included bios of relevant NPCs, a brief history of Azeroth, and other tidbits. There is also a wealth of information out there online for further study.

Finally, we will be using the D&D: World of Warcraft Gameplay Expansion, of course. Details on available species and subclasses can be found here in the character creation topic. But for the application process, we will NOT be building out the character sheets. We will handle that after players have been selected, at which point I'll share access to the sourcebook on DnDBeyond.

Applications will open on Nov. 3rd and close on Nov. 17th, and I'll hope to have player selections made shortly thereafter. I'd like to get the game going around Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) so that the initial momentum hopefully carries us through the holidays and beyond.

Please only apply with one character. Put your best foot forward.

To apply:

  • Create a thread in the Applications area that includes the character name, species, likely class/subclass (if known), and whether you're Horde or Alliance, in the title.

    • Ex.  Sameerah Nasri, Human Paladin, Alliance

    • Species Allowed:

      • Alliance

        • Humans (including Kul Tirans)

        • Dwarves (Dark Iron with permission)

        • Gnomes (but no Mechagnomes)

        • Night Elves

        • Draenei

      • Horde

        • Orcs (Mag'har with permission)

        • Trolls (Amani and Zandalari with permission)

        • Forsaken

        • Tauren (but no Highmountain)

        • Blood Elves

        • Goblins

    • Disallowed Classes:

      • Death Knight

      • Demon Hunter

      • Evoker

  • Describe the character's personality, backstory, and general appearance. You may include artwork if you wish.

    • When considering your backstory as it pertains to the campaign in Northrend, you can decide whether you were part of the Borean Tundra front or the Howling Fjord front. If you're familiar with the zones, you can also consider quest content there as canon and incorporate details however you see fit. But after those zones, the timelines begin to diverge. So if you are keen to include something from later, please ask first.

  • You can make mention of your intended build, but I do not want to see any of the crunch. That will come after you are selected.

  • If possible, clone over an existing post from another game that gives me a sense of your posting style. If you'd prefer to write a new one for your proposed character, feel free, but try to make it representative of an average post.

  • Finally, tell me a little bit about yourself. In particular, what level of familiarity do you have with Warcraft? Again, it's not required! I'm just curious.
