Return to Gurakh-Dûm
The Legend of Gurakh-Dûm
Long ago, the halls of Gurakh-Dûm, the Halls of the Ancestors, shone with the brilliance of dwarven craft and culture. Carved deep within the heart of the mountains, its towering columns and glittering vaults were a testament to the strength and ingenuity of the dwarven race. Here, the forges never cooled, and the wealth of the earth was brought forth in an unending bounty. Songs of heroes echoed through its mighty halls, and the light of the Great Hearth was said to burn with the favor of Mahal, creator of the dwarves.
But even the strongest stone can crack.
In its final days, Gurakh-Dûm was a kingdom divided. Whispers of discontent grew louder in the shadowed corners of its halls. Greed and mistrust festered like an open wound. The dragon, Varakorra the Unholy Fire, came not with fire and rage, but with a voice like honey and the guise of an elven emissary. Her name was Elenwë, and through her lies, she set dwarf against dwarf. She tempted the proud with promises of power and filled the hearts of the jealous with poison. When the time was right, she revealed her true form—a colossal serpent wreathed in flame.
The kingdom fell in fire and ruin. The Great Hearth was extinguished, the forges silenced, and the dwarves scattered. Clans once united by blood and stone became strangers to one another, retreating into their own corners of the world. Some adapted, some endured, and some faded into legend. Gurakh-Dûm became a haunted memory, its halls abandoned to darkness.
The Call to Reclaim
Now, centuries later, whispers of a new hope have begun to spread among the scattered dwarves. Signs and portents, dreams sent by Mahal himself, and the rediscovery of old maps have all pointed to a single truth: the time has come to reclaim Gurakh-Dûm.
The clans are divided. Many cling to their hard-won survival in the surface world, unwilling to risk their lives for the sake of a forgotten kingdom. Others see only danger and futility in returning to the cursed halls. Yet among them are those who remember the songs of old, who feel the pull of their ancestral home in their very bones. These dwarves have gathered—miners, warriors, smiths, lorekeepers, and dreamers—to embark on an expedition that will test their mettle and determine the fate of their people.
The journey will not be easy. Gurakh-Dûm lies deep within the earth, its once-mighty gates sealed by stone and time. The ruins are infested with creatures of shadow, ancient traps, and the remnants of Varakorra’s terrible reign. Rival factions—both dwarven and otherwise—may seek to sabotage the expedition or claim the riches of Gurakh-Dûm for themselves.
The Beginning of the Journey
The expedition begins at the Outpost of Karak Vareth, a small and hastily constructed camp nestled in the shadow of the mountains. Smoke rises from forges cobbled together with scavenged stone and iron, and the air is filled with the sound of dwarves preparing for their descent into the unknown. The smell of earth and metal mingles with the faint tang of fear, but also with a spark of hope.
It is here that you, proud sons and daughters of the scattered clans, stand together. Each of you carries the weight of your people’s history and the burden of their hopes. In your veins runs the blood of those who built Gurakh-Dûm, who fought to defend it, and who longed to see it reclaimed. Now, the dream of home rests on your shoulders.
The gates of Gurakh-Dûm are silent, its secrets waiting to be uncovered. The dragon’s shadow lingers, and the echoes of ancient songs seem to call from the depths. This is a tale of fire and stone, of loss and redemption, and of the dwarves who dared to reclaim their birthright.
Will you succeed, carving your names into the annals of dwarven legend? Or will the darkness of the past swallow you whole, leaving Gurakh-Dûm to remain forever lost?
The journey begins now. Grab your axes and hammers, your tomes and tools. The Halls of the Ancestors await.
