Tales of the White Star

GM Tiger667 · 5/6 players · posts Once per day

The story of a struggling mercenary company operating in the Periphery of the Inner Sphere; surrounded by giants among what was once the Aurigan Coalition before that fell apart. An aging company leader gets killed in his first steps on the road of an epic treasure hunt, leaving his adopted children/pilots with little to their name except their threadbare mechs and a possible lead to untold riches. The year is 3046 and times are tough. Do you have what it takes to live the mercenary life? This game uses the "A Time Of War" version of the Mechwarrior rpg as well as the Battletech: A Game of Armored Combat rules for mechcombat. You will spend a large amount of time in the cockpit and on hexmaps. Mechcombat is run by me using MegaMek; having MegaMek yourself is not required. The world is a variety of grays, if you expect to play the "good" guys against the "evil" guys this isn't the game for you. The clans aren't a thing yet so those are out. This game is kind of a sequel on the Battletech computer game; having played it is a bonus but isn't necessary.

The White Star mercenary company is a struggling band of hired soldiers led by the ageing Maynard Calhoun. The Inner Sphere is a dangerous place and the Periphery doubly so but the reward here at the meeting point of 5 great powers, The Free Worlds League, The Capellan Confederation, The Federated Suns, The Taurian Concordat, and the Magistracy of Canopus can be great. At least that's what they say.

The year is 3046.

Maynard Calhoun was killed in an unfortuitous shootout after reconnecting with an old merc unit comrade as he apparently was starting out on a desperate treasure hunt. Now his protege's are left alone with only their mechs and the company's fading reputation to their name and the hint of an unfathomable treasure.

This game has a narrative focus and a healthy mix of roleplaying and combat (at least that's what I'm trying to accomplish), in and out of battlemechs. I've never gotten the hang or seen the fun in puzzles so that will be lacking. This isn't a sandbox game and I will provide a story but the players have freedom to pursue it in any way they feel is best.

Quickstart rules for the game can be found here and can be downloaded for free. These are nearly all that is required to play the game though the main rulebook holds expanded character creation rules among other things.
