The Twilight War

The Cold War never ended.

The USSR fell, but the Warsaw Pact remained. While everyone got very rich off trade, the Warsaw Pact maintained a moderately hostile stance to social encroachment by The West and NATO Countries.

After China caused COVID and upwards of 700 million deaths across the world, Russia invaded China, starting the Twilight War.

Germany was, as ever, the flashpoint in Europe.

The German Democratic Republic fell to a carefully-engineered plan by the German Republic in 2021. Poland declared themselves neutral, while NATO and the Warsaw Pact fought over Europe and the Pacific.

This carried on for four years, living only a partially mass industry-capable Russia and an essentially untouched -- save Portland, Oregon, which was backpack-nuked with multiple devices--United Ststes.

The elections of 2024 end with charges of voter fraud on both sides and assassinations on POTUS and VPOTUS within minutes of each other and the former Speaker of the House as POTUS. The new POTUS and both candidates have legal problems that preclude them from taking office; the military coordinates with the Joint Chiefs and stays the hell out of politics.

Your problem is that you ended up among the troops in devastated Europe, Poland to be precise. US Forces are being conveyed back to the United States, as after one last major battle, Russia is spent for at least four years.

The only winners in the Twilight War were the United States, Canada, Poland, and Israel.

This system uses a modified mash-up of Twilight: 2000 Version 1 and Version 2 rife with house rules.
Plus a whole bunch of house-ruled stuff to accommodate more accurate versions of equipment.
