The Great Modron March
Note: I'm seriously contemplating pulling in the deadline for recruitment to August the 14th! Needless to say, the response has been a lot greater than I anticipated and I've already got a wonderful pool of applicants. I can't express how surprised and grateful I am that everyone has entertained my half-baked application process...
System: D&D 5.5e!
Setting: Planescape!
Tone: As surreal, absurd, wonderous, philosophical and/or gritty as we want it to be.
Player Count: 6 Max
I'm a fairly seasoned DM and I'm intimately familiar with PbP, but I haven't run a game in a while and this is my first time advertising for a game on a very new forum. I appreciate any patience and grace you have to offer while I learn by doing the thing.
The Brass Tacks: I cannot stress enough that I'm looking for amicable, dedicated Players! I'm not really concerned with character classes or party balance right now, so I'm trying something new. There will be a Session 0 after applicants are selected where everyone comes together and hashes out final character decisions. For now, I want to know if we are compatible. I'm talkin about you, hot stuff.
PART ONE - WHAT IS YOUR DEAL?
How much do you love Owlbears?
How frequently do you expect the DM to post?
What do you feel is a fair amount of time for the group to wait on you if you cannot post?
What sort of tone do you prefer in an adventure?
Do you prefer a strict Rules as Written style or a more flexible Rule of Cool?
Tell me about one of your favorite characters that you've played in the past. What makes it memorable?
How would you handle an in-character disagreement?
What is one thing a DM or fellow player can do that completely ruins your fun?
How would you ensure that you leave enough space for other players to shine during roleplay or combat?
If your character's goals clash heavily with the rest of the party's goals, how do you handle it?
What do you think of using Discord to nudge each other for responses and check in?
Is there anything else you expect or would ask of some internet rando that is offering to run a game for you?
PART TWO - DON'T YOU WANT TO SEE A CHARACTER?
I GUESS. Pitch 1 or 2 flexible character concepts including their motivation to adventure with a group. However you want to format that is up to you.
If you're unfamiliar with Planescape and still want to play, just pitch a clueless Prime from whatever world/setting you choose! You'll pick it up as we go.
That's it for now.
The following is just FYI. Please do not create a character sheet for the application!
Allowed Content: Any Official. Reskin it to fit whatever weirdness you have rattling around in your brainbox!
Backstory: I don't need to see a 10 pager, but I'd like to see enough to get an idea of what the character is about.
Experience: We will begin at Level 2 and use milestone advancement.
Wealth: Standard Starting Equipment for your Class and/or Background
Ability Scores: Standard Point Buy
Hitpoints/Health: Max for Level 1, half for consecutive
Alignment: No restrictions as long as it doesn't get disruptive
Other Notes About Gameplay:
I don't track torches, the weight of gold, or nitpick over character sheets in general. If it's cheap and doesn't have an attached mechanic, I don't care. Treat your backpack like a magic hat, but whatever you pull out of it should make sense within the context of you backstory and background. Write the word "crag cat" somewhere in your application so I know you read this far.
Roleplay and Exploration are where I think we'll spend most of our time.
I love a skill challenge. Group skill challenges are even better.
I enjoy combat more if we do it less. That said, I try to create enjoyable grid maps for that stuff and keep it moving.
Rule of Cool is a cool rule.
Good Questions:
Will we use the AD&D or 5e faction line-up?
5e, but I'm easy. For instance, if you prefer Xaosects to Hands of Havoc, I can roll with that.
I'm aware that contradictions exist between the AD&D material and the 5e supplements, but I'm not a fan of the controversial Faction War or chalking it up to a "glitch" in the multiverse. Let's just say it didn't happen.
Does "Any official" include pre-2024 Material?
I'm not saying "No!" but I'm not saying "Yes!" either. If there's a pre-2024 and a post-2024 option for the same thing, I'm going to favor the new thing. But if you feel that it isn't the same and you'd enjoy playing the pre-2024 thing more, we can talk about it.
What is the policy on GenAI?
I request that you do not use it to generate content for this game, please and thank you.
Note: I reserve the right to change the application process and/or pretend this ad never existed if things get out of hand.
