The Right Side Of The Sky
So, here’s how it is…
‘Bout twenty years back, the Miranda Signal stirred things up but good. Reavers weren’t just spacer ghost stories no more. They was real, and worse the accidental creation of a government experiment in keep’n folk chemically pacified.
For a spell, folk were awful riled up. Looked like the Rim and Border Worlds were aim’n to rise again, kick off the Unification War all over again. But the Alliance spun the story, blamed a rogue faction, had a pretty little commission to investigate, threw a few scapegoats in jail, slapped down a few sanctions, called the Miranda Seven big damn heroes.
A fancy new, totally innocent I assure you, administration handed out just enough reform and concessions to keep a lid on things and noth’n really changed – politicians be slippery like that.
Things been all peacable since then. Apart from the Reaver Wars, but they was mostly just a series of skirmishes. Twelve years of the Alliance Navy save’n face for getting their asses handed to them by a buncha savages at the Battle of Kalidassa, when the Signal went out. “Civilisation” keeps creeping further and further out, bring’n all its stuffy rules, taxes and surveillance with it.
Still, there’s a little space left in The Black for independently-minded folks, out here on the raggedy edge.
We keep flyin’ best we can, make do and get by. Everybody just try’n to keep on the right side of the sky.
Hello!
This is my first attempt to GM a PbP game, so bear with me if my application guidelines are a bit wordy and clunky. But on to the fun stuff...
This game grew out of me thinking about what a Firefly revival might actually be like if it ever happened. So I baked in a connection to the original cast, and room for cameos from familiar faces.
Your characters are hiring on as the new crew of Serenity, working for a shipping co-op currently run by Zoe. Or booking in as a long-term passenger.
I do have an overarching plot in mind, but as a GM, I like to keep things collaborative and player-driven so it will be mostly in the background unless you choose to more directly engage with it.
I have "A-story" scenarios sketched out for the first two or three "episodes", but I'll be drawing on players' backstories and inter-PC relationships for inspiration on the B-stories - and if we make it that far, future episodes. The goal is to give each PC time in the spotlight to advance their own story arcs.
Tone wise: If Firefly was basically the post-Civil War Wild West, a Spaghetti Western in space, this is more like the tail end of the 19th Century when the American Frontier era was coming to an end.
Red Dead Redemption in space. People looking to hold on to that frontier freedom, and their own moral code, as the powers-that-be vie to impose their brand of order.
Game Expectations
I'm looking for 4-8 players, who can post at least twice a week, in character, on average.
I won't be a stickler for posting rates - if you know you won't be able to post for a bit, it'd be nice to let the group know. But there's no need to explain, IRL happens. I'll move things along with your character present but fading into the background until you start posting again, no harm, no foul.
Although, if I don't see any new IC or OOC posts, or get a private message after a few weeks I'll have to assume I've lost your interest.
And finally, your character can be a loveable bastard but don't be a dick OOC. The crew squablin' with each other was part of the charm of Firefly, but keep any inter-party conflicts verbal. Maybe a little light fisticuffs, shooting at other PCs is right out.
If you want to pull a minor Jayne-style betrayal out of greed or a moment of weakness, cool. Just keep it redeemable, so its believable the other characters would take yours back afterward.
It should be a dramatic complication to overcome, a threat of danger, rather than something that actually screws everybody else. I'd also prefer if you run something like that by me ahead of time.
