Seeing the party started to retreat, and observing the vicious disposition of the gnome, the Paladin shouted at the group "Get back! I will cover you!". Vala stood with her shield up, moving backwards whilst closing the gap between her and the group. "I don't think it'd be wise killing him", she concluded with a moderate tone.

Taking a defensive stance (dodge action).

"Thank you Vala, everyone retreat," Makaria echo's the sentiment of the other two and appreciated the shieldmaidens efforts to block any incoming crossbow bolts with her shield. Makaria, heads back down the passage make a turn on the left out of harms way, and out of direct sight from the crossbow contraption; and Gnome controlling it.

The Gnome is cackling madly as he fires at the retreating group. Vala holding her shield up being the obvious target. In rapid succession the automatic crossbow is hurling 2 bolts at the retreating paladin.

1 first bolt hits Vala and deals 10 points of piercing damage, while the second goes entirely wild

Since Vala took a defensive stance from the moment Gilavar talked to the gnome mounted on a turret, I believe both attacks must be rolled with disadvantage. On the other hand, Vala is not in the line of sight or immediately visible.

If you had taken the dodge action, attack rolls would have been with disadvantage. You did not declare such an action. The attack hits.

I admit to having overlooked the posted dodge action, in that post. But I will not accept defensive stance as an automatic declaration of a dodge action. So I’m not entirely sure what that second post is about.

if you feel I do not get your intended actions, state them clearly. You wrote you move backwards, where do yo move to and how far? If you don’t provide that information I will rule your position based on MY understanding where you are. In this case still in the line if sight of the crossbow. I’ll take back the ruling about your character being hit, but I must insist on clarity of action declaration for the future.

Gilavar doesn't spot any obivous resistance ahead of him, just the regular hallways with the lamps lighting the walls in their regularly spaced positions. The Corridor leading to the north seams to curve towards the west while there is another passage leading east.

((Need to know if Katya's metamorphosis was successful or not?, and noting her token, position with the Gnome?? Since she Makaria retreated to where she was to her left and Makaria can see looking at Kataya from behind rock))

Yes Katya has turned into a regular size spider, and decided to take a position above the gnome. Not sure how well Makaria would see such a small target based on the distance.

Languages: Common, Elvish, Draconic, Druidic

FeatsObservantQuick to notice details of your environment, you gain the following benefits:

Increase your Intelligence or Wisdom score by 1, to a maximum of 20.
If you can see a creature's mouth while it is speaking a language you understand, you can interpret what it's saying by reading its lips.
You have a +5 bonus to your passive Wisdom (Perception) and passive Intelligence (Investigation) scores.

 | FeaturesRitual CastingYou can cast a Druid spell as a ritual if that spell has the ritual tag and you have the spell prepared
Wild ShapeStarting at 2nd level, you can use your action to magically assume the shape of a beast that you have seen before. You can use this feature twice. You regain expended uses when you finish a short or long rest.

Your druid level determines the beasts you can transform into, as shown in the Beast Shapes table. At 2nd level, for example, you can transform into any beast that has a challenge rating of 1/4 or lower that doesn't have a flying or swimming speed.
You can stay in a beast shape for a number of hours equal to half your druid level (rounded down). You then revert to your normal form unless you expend another use of this feature. You can revert to your normal form earlier by using a bonus action on your turn. You automatically revert if you fall unconscious, drop to 0 hit points, or die.

While you are transformed, the following rules apply:

Your game statistics are replaced by the statistics of the beast, but you retain your alignment, personality, and Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores. You also retain all of your skill and saving throw proficiencies, in addition to gaining those of the creature. If the creature has the same proficiency as you and the bonus in its stat block is higher than yours, use the creature's bonus instead of yours. If the creature has any legendary or lair actions, you can't use them.
When you transform, you assume the beast's hit points and Hit Dice. When you revert to your normal form, you return to the number of hit points you had before you transformed. However, if you revert as a result of dropping to 0 hit points, any excess damage carries over to your normal form, For example, if you take 10 damage in animal form and have only 1 hit point left, you revert and take 9 damage. As long as the excess damage doesn't reduce your normal form to 0 hit points, you aren't knocked unconscious.
You can't cast spells, and your ability to speak or take any action that requires hands is limited to the capabilities of your beast form. Transforming doesn't break your concentration on a spell you've already cast, however, or prevent you from taking actions that are part of a spell, such as Call Lightning, that you've already cast.
You retain the benefit of any features from your class, race, or other source and can use them if the new form is physically capable of doing so. However, you can't use any of your special senses, such as darkvision, unless your new form also has that sense.
You choose whether your equipment falls to the ground in your space, merges into your new form, or is worn by it. Worn equipment functions as normal, but the DM decides whether it is practical for the new form to wear a piece of equipment, based on the creature's shape and size. Your equipment doesn't change size or shape to match the new form, and any equipment that the new form can't wear must either fall to the ground or merge with it. Equipment that merges with the form has no effect until you leave the form.

Circle Form: MoonThe rites of your circle grant you the ability to transform into more dangerous animal forms. Starting at 2nd level, you can use your Wild Shape to transform into a beast with a challenge rating as high as 1. You ignore the Max. CR column of the Beast Shapes table, but must abide by the other limitations there.

Starting at 6th level, you can transform into a beast with a challenge rating as high as your druid level divided by 3, rounded down.

Combat Wild ShapeWhen you choose this circle at 2nd level, you gain the ability to use Wild Shape on your turn as a bonus action, rather than as an action.

Additionally, while you are transformed by Wild Shape, you can use a bonus action to expend one spell slot to regain 1d8 hit points per level of the spell slot expended.
<1/2>
Wild CompanionAt 2nd level, you gain the ability to summon a spirit that assumes an animal form: as an action, you can expend a use of your Wild Shape feature to cast the Find Familiar spell, without material components.

When you cast the spell in this way, the familiar is a fey instead of a beast, and the familiar disappears after a number of hours equal to half your druid level.

Her mandibles chitter as she hears the Gnome cackles loudly while it attempts to skewer her companions, attached to the ceiling just above it, she decides that the offender is not going to stop without intervention, as he clearly does not care for their words. Moving a little further behind him, she loses her grip on the ceiling as her body begins to change forms once more as she falls through the air, rotating so that when her large bear paws hit the ground and room shakes from the weight, she is standing, many heads taller than the Gnome before her, whose weapon is facing forward at her friends.

"Grrrrrrr....."

The low grumble escapes her throat, and the strength she feels coursing through the rippling muscles of the bear form are intoxicating. The gorilla form had felt strong, the wolf form had felt swift, but as a bear? It felt unstoppable. As gently as she could, she moves to grapple the Gnome, hoping to pull him away from the machine and to end the onslaught without her friends getting hurt, or upsetting any of the other Gnomes that would likely take the assault of their companion as a slight towards them. This was a peaceful mission, no matter how hard others would try to make it. If the Gnome was trapped in her grasp, she would simply lift him off of the platform and hold him there, forcing him to listen to them.

Well, not to her. The bear form was many things, but eloquent was not one.
