Before

“You know what I miss? Pop. My guitar, my iPod, hanging out at 1984, real beds, oh… oh my god Milky Ways. So good.
You don’t miss the big things, the real things. You never think about them, it hurts too much.”

Cadence Sawyer was a pretty ordinary teenage girl growing up in Springfield, Missouri. Her dad, Will, was an engineer and big ol’ nerd, while her mom, Carolyn. was a nurse originally from New York. They divorced around the time Cadey was 14, and she, her little brother Hudson and younger sister Elsie, mostly lived with their mom after that – and Candence transferred to Glendale High School. By her junior year, Cadey was a just a little above average academically, and part of the popular set – although far from one of the real social movers and shakers, she was on the cheer and track teams, played a mean guitar. Her boyfriend, Derek kept asking her to play with his band, but Cadey didn’t have the confidence to play in front of an actual audience rather than just a handful of people at a party. Things were normal for most of 2010, Grandpa Sawyer took the kids out camping and hunting once a month like he always did, Hudson was an annoying pain-in-the-ass, Elsie was getting kinda-cool Cadey guessed. There were tests, and the usual teen dramas at school and Carolyn’s new fiancé Shawn tried way too hard to be the cool stepdad while Cadey and her dad finished restoring a 1968 Ford Mustang Shelby for Granpa Sawyer.
Things started getting really weird on Cadey’s 17th birthday. Her dad surprised her with the keys to the Shelby, okay that wasn’t the weird part but it was what was on her mind most of the day. The weird part was things like the neighbors packing up and leaving, all in a hurry, and the President announcing a global pandemic. Cadey’s mom had already insisted on keeping the birthday small, worried about the virus, then she also got called in to the hospital mid-family celebration which sucked. But whatever, Cadey already planned to sneak out that night for a real party with her friends. The last just weird thing she noticed on her way out was the silhouette of Mrs. Thompson-from-Across-the-Street walking around her living room – which was odd, because the little old lady hardly got out of her wheelchair at all.

Things got a lot worse than weird after that.

After

“There’s only us and them, now. The living and the dead, and there’s way too few of us left. So, I have a simple rule; you kill, you die. And these days, stealing supplies is just killing someone slow.”

Springfield descended into chaos overnight, and Cadey barely escaped the bloodbath her party became. She couldn’t even call for help, as the phone network overloaded and collapsed. By the time she got home, it was a wreck and her family was gone. Whatever happened they didn’t even have time to leave a note, so Cadey grabbed what she could and was about to go look for everyone else when Grandpa Sawyer turned up, his truck loaded with supplies. He told Cadey her dad would get everybody else out, and they were probably headed to the family cabin like he was. The two of them never knew for sure, since they didn’t make it that far – between all the other people fleeing the city, and the military fighting the walking dead their way was blocked.
They eventually ended up with a group of survivors that coalesced around a couple of survivalist-militia types. It was tense, but it almost seemed like the group would work for a about two months. Then things went south, people were hoarding food and supplies for themselves, fighting over just about everything, stealing from each other – and the group just violently disintegrated. Grandpa Sawyer was killed, and Cadey had to kill. She was left alone in the wilderness with a nasty headwound and a gash on her cheek and had to stich them up herself with improvised sutures.
She managed to survive, wandering and scavenging, for maybe another month or two with only a stray dog she named Hudson for company. She decided if she ever found another group, she wouldn’t let it fall apart – that she wouldn’t, nobody would survive if people acted like that. So anybody who did was a threat to everybody.

Then she ran into the group in the Ozarks. She wasn’t sure she could trust them at first, but a couple of them at least said the right kind of things and talked about building something. She liked the thought of that.

I like. :)

The before/after really works and give a good point of view. Right now it's only been about 6 months, but seems like a hard one for Cadence. How did she end up with her dog? Anything specific thinking breedwise, etc? :)

So after a bit of research, I'm going to make Hudson a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog. There's a bunch of breeders of that specific breed in and around the Ozarks that Hudson could plausibly have come from, directly or indirectly, and "Swissies" are generally described as big, smart well-socialised working dogs/pets - they've even traditionally been used to pull small carts. They're wary of strangers, but protective of people they've bonded with. So all and all, a good apocalypse dog,
