I loosely used "innate" probably as defaulting to some previous game mechanic for innate spell abilities. The class description has intuitively use as the operative language.
Won't argue, though, with avoiding a test that might result in taking damage!! Since the Pale One class is effectively illiterate with regards to scrolls and tablets and can't use them, it make sense that the limited ability that the class offers works cleanly.
