Background:

Guang Wu was born to a minor clan of scribes near the border lands. Moulded from a young age to pursue the academic path, Guang Wu threw himself into bookish studies and had achieved enough qualification to enter the exams of the Imperial Academy. Unfortunately, news came that his family had fallen prey to a orcish rebellion, leaving him the sole survivor as he had been far from home.

Quitting the scholarly path for vengeance, Guang Wu enlisted in the army conscription, joining the empire in hopes of striking back at the rebels who had butchered his loved ones. After nearly a decade of campaigning, mostly used to beat down human and even elvish dissidents, the man had considered deserting until a chance reassignment placed him in a regiment sent to his homeland to liberate it from orcish hold. He was no doubt handpicked due to his then vocal hatred of orcs.

What awaited him in the fields of battle was brutality and ruthlessness, he relished in glee to claim the heads of the rebels, rising quickly through the ranks for his daring. It was there he saw his fair share of imperial corruption, shrewd politicking and general disregard for the welfare of soldier. All things that made him start questioning the path he had taken. Eventually, the fighting took him to his ancestral home. With blind vengeance clouding his judgement, he agreed to lead his unit with little support in a reckless assault under the behest of some nobleborn officer who had wanted to conserve his own forces. Any good officer would have tried to raise the pointless waste in soldier lives, but Guang Wu was not interested in his troops at that moment.

While he had survived the foolhardy assault by virtue of knowing the layout of the clan holdings, many of those who trusted him did not. In the holdings, what remained of his squad had found orcish young ones. There was an argument over what is to be done to the young, orders were to leave no prisoners and it was in the middle of all the shouting, the adrenaline, then a surprise attack by the mothers made Guang Wu see red. The next thing he knew, he was in a healer's camp, bathed in human and orcish blood. What happened was a mystery to him, and the other lone survivor of his squad refused to talk to him. Or even see him after the campaign.

With the rebellious orcs wiped out, Guang Wu turned down the offer to settle down. Opting to retire from the army, he sold his sword for enough gold to travel and live aimlessly for a few years before settling down in Esker as a gatherer, sometimes foraging in the unforgiving wastelands for strange material to sell to the local or visiting mage or scholar. Of the town, only Ella and Benjamin have some vague ideas of his past as he would interact with the former when selling his wares, and the later when he felt philosophical and the wounds in his soul unbearable.

He had pondered perusing Galena's service once, but due to his upbringing, shunned such weakness. In Gabriella he saw a bit of a kindred spirit and perhaps a possible path he could have taken in life. Occasionally he would be sought out by Fereen by name when she felt the need for extra muscle for work, and he had so far never turned down any request. He has a soft spot for Flick, and would never hesitate to dispense some life advice, even teach the goblin a thing or two about self defense.

Overall he is a quiet fellow in the village, joining in the festive periods, but saying little for the past five years. Perhaps now he can finally settle down, surely nothing worse can happen that he has not already seen.
