Create a Character

I would like to see a nuanced and complex character. Give me a snapshot of life before the calamity, and how they've adapted to living in the new world. Include as much information as you like about their ties to family and friends, loyalties to organizations, stuff they miss from the old world, or how they like things as they are now, and anything you think might be relevant to a compelling character.

This story will start in the mid Western United States, although your character may be from anywhere in the world if you have a reason as to why you're local.

Creating a Character

I don't really care how you present your character to me. Link a M-W character sheet, write everything out, send me a picture of your paper, etc.

Start with 125 character creation points.

1: Setting

This is set in a modern world that you would recognize, so no magic, no future science, no supernatural. The world is plunging into an Ice Age. No one you know has any reliable information about why, or whether it will get better or worse. Cold weather survival skills are totally commonplace now, and should feature in your character decisions. You will start on the road, on a long journey from one settlement to another. We can talk about why, or what you're looking for, but wilderness survival should be a consideration.

2: Physical Appearance

A general description of what anyone would notice upon meeting you for the first time. Attractiveness subject to costs.

Height and Weight (could become important for climbing trees or crossing rickety bridges).

Attractiveness

Attractiveness
Attractiveness Point Cost Reaction Bonus / Penalty
Hideous -20 -4
Ugly -10 -2
Unattractive -5 -1
Average 0 -
Attractive 5 +1
Handsome & Beautiful 15 +2 / +4
Very Handsome & Very Beautiful 25 +2 / +6 (-2)

3: Wealth & Standing

Wealth

In this game, money isn't used any longer except to start fires or to fill the toe of a sock as an improvised sap. Wealth is measured in food, equipment, and luxuries.

Starting Gear
Gear Point Cost Description (details are negotiable, these are guidelines)
Naked -25 You have nothing. Even what clothes you're wearing are torn and inadequate. You have no food, no weapons, no shelter and no stash. Not recommended.
Poor -15 Your clothing is adequate for daytime during clear weather in the summer. Your shoes are about to wear out. You have two days of perishable food, a butcher knife, no shelter and no stash.
Struggling -10 Your clothing is adequate for summer and winter during clear weather. Your shoes are adequate. You have 4 days of canned food, a knife, a pistol with no ammo, a plastic water bottle, a blanket, a few bandages, and a small, worn backpack.
Average 5 Your clothing is cold weather rated for short storm exposure. You have good hiking boots or quality sneakers. A week's worth of mixed perishable and canned food. A small medical kit. A large, sturdy backpack. Several changes of clothes. A working pistol with 1d+5 bullets, a tent and bedroll, a book of matches, various jars and bottles of water, and a few trade goods (books/painkillers/antibiotics)
Comfortable 10 Same as Average, only double, with a decent hunting rifle and 10 rounds, with a small stash of the same amount again hidden nearby. You might have one special survival item, like a battery heater with a solar charger, or a reusable water purifier.
Geared 25 Same as Comfortable, except the items are very high quality survival gear. MREs to last you the month. You have 3 special survival items, such as a high tech hunting bow/crossbow, a ghillie suit, climbing pitons and hammer, specialty rope, etc.
Ridiculously Geared 45 Modern and advanced military survival gear and weapons. You tell me.
You Have Wheels 75 You have a working car with a full tank of gas/diesel/battery charge, and a supply of whatever fuel it takes. Buy another slot on the chart to keep in your trunk.

Gear is incredibly important for survival. The more geared you are, the better your chances. It can be hard to hide how geared you are, and others may want you to share.

4: Advantages, Disadvantages & Quirks

Take what you like, and we'll discuss it. This is a real world/apocalyptic scenario, so magic is right out, and some organizational/civilization based advantages won't really be applicable. Be creative, and I'll do my best to accommodate you. I'm more interested in compelling characters than optimized, but play what's fun for you.

5: Skills

Obviously, cold weather winter survival, municipal infrastructure, construction... blacksmithing? Bowyer and Fletcher? Take what you like, and we'll discuss it. If you have some really unlikely or outlandish skills, come up with the story about why. The more hooks you give me, the more I'll like it.
