COSMOS OF ELISSAR


The world upon which Elissar sits is unlike many others, and the nature of its creation (as well as the divine beings wrought by that) marks it as notably different from other medieval realms. When Elissar was wrought by Ulvatu, the Flame of Creation, its essence was splintered into many facets. These eternal valya (angels and demons) walked the world shaping it. Sages say that some of these beings still live on Elissar, perhaps in the guise of mortals or—in the case of demons—in their true demonic form.

Clerics. Clerics worship individual valya, usually the most powerful ones. Real clerics are, however, actually quite rare and most priests have no supernatural powers.

PLANES

Sages talk of the three known realms—Silyōna, Nülda, and Elissar.

The Shining Lands of Silyōna, the Heavens, are said to be across the sea, while Nülda, the Pit, is deep in the bowels of the world. There are myths of heroes who traveled to Nülda and back; there are none who have returned from Silyōna. How true is this? Who knows! Valya moored in what once was and unwilling to let go of the past are trapped in Nülda, and those valya oriented to what will be and willing to embrace the future move on to far away Silyōna.

Planar travel is unheard of in Elissar, and magics that entail travel to other planes, extradimensional spaces, and so on, do not exist. Unlike other worlds this place has no Astral Plane—it is the very firmament upon which all others rely. The Dreaming (the Fey Mirror) and the Bleak Gate (the Wraith Mirror) exist however, accessed only via rare portals.

Elemental Planes are thus a part of the world—they are concentrated locations of natural energy such as a volcano (fire), the depths of the sea (water), caverns deep underground (earth), or the clouds in the sky (air). Elementals can only be summoned from their element (a fire elemental from a fire, a water elemental from the ocean) so proximity to these is necessary for conjurers of such magic.

SILYŌNA

Silyōna, often referred to as The Shining Lands, is a celestial and exalted realm in the cosmos of Elissar. It represents the heavens and is said to be located across the sea, a place of divine beauty and serenity. Here’s what the lore reveals about Silyōna:

The Divine Essence of Silyōna: Silyōna is the embodiment of what will be, a realm that embraces the future and the potential for growth and change. It is the antithesis of Nülda, the Pit, which is moored in the past. Silyōna is a place where valya oriented towards progress and the embrace of what is to come find their abode.

Access to Silyōna: Travel to Silyōna is unheard of in Elissar. Myths speak of heroes who have ventured to Nülda and returned, but there are no tales of those who have returned from Silyōna. This shrouds the realm in mystery and makes it an object of aspiration and wonder for the inhabitants of Elissar.

The Role of Valya in Silyōna: Valya, the divine beings of Elissar, are categorized based on their allegiance and actions. Those who are forward-looking and willing to embrace the future are said to move on to Silyōna. It is a realm far removed from the material world, where these beings exist in a state of celestial grace.

Silyōna’s Influence on Elissar: While Silyōna may seem distant and detached from the material plane, its influence is significant. It represents the ideal, the pinnacle of divine existence, and serves as a guiding light for the valya and mortals alike. The Shining Lands are a symbol of hope and the promise of a brighter tomorrow.

Representation in the Cosmos: Each valya, whether residing in Nülda or Silyōna, is represented by a star in the night sky of Elissar. The stars twinkling above are a constant reminder of the presence of these divine beings and the realms they inhabit.

In essence, Silyōna is a realm of divine splendor, a place where the future is embraced, and the valya who are aligned with this vision reside. It is a realm that remains largely a mystery to the inhabitants of Elissar, a source of divine inspiration and the ultimate destination for those who seek to align with the forces of progress and light.

The Celestial Court of Silyōna: Silyōna is governed by the Celestial Court, a council of the most enlightened valya who have transcended the material concerns of Elissar. They are led by Elythia, the Star Weaver, who orchestrates the movements of the stars to maintain harmony between the realms. The court convenes at the Luminous Assembly, a palace made of crystalline light that floats above the highest peak of Silyōna.

The Gardens of Eternity: Within Silyōna lies the Gardens of Eternity, where time flows differently from the material world. Here, the valya cultivate rare celestial flora that blooms with the essence of creation. These gardens are a source of divine inspiration for poets and dreamers in Elissar, who sometimes receive visions of the gardens in their dreams.

The River of Souls: A shimmering river known as the Aetherflow winds through Silyōna. It is said that the souls of the departed pass through this river, where their memories are cleansed before they are reborn. The Aetherflow is guarded by the Sylphs of Serenity, ethereal beings who guide the souls along their journey.

The Archive of Destinies: Silyōna is home to the Archive of Destinies, an infinite library that holds the records of all past, present, and future events of Elissar. The Oracles of the Archive, a group of valya seers, oversee the library and occasionally share their knowledge with mortals through cryptic prophecies.

The Celestial Forge: At the heart of Silyōna is the Celestial Forge, where the valya craft artifacts of immense power. These artifacts are imbued with the essence of Silyōna and are capable of shaping the very fabric of reality. The forge is tended by Vulcanar, the Flame Shaper, who was once a mortal blacksmith elevated to the status of a valya for his unparalleled skill.

The Festival of Stars: Once every millennium, Silyōna celebrates the Festival of Stars, where the boundaries between the realms grow thin. During this time, mortals with pure hearts may catch glimpses of Silyōna in the night sky, and the valya descend to Elissar to partake in the festivities, sharing their wisdom and blessings.

NÜLDA

Nülda, often referred to as The Pit, is a dark and foreboding realm in the cosmos of Elissar. It is a place that is deeply rooted in the past, holding onto the echoes of what once was.

The Essence of Nülda: Nülda is the antithesis of Silyōna, The Shining Lands. While Silyōna represents the future and the potential for change, Nülda is moored in the past, a realm that refuses to let go of history. It is a place where the shadows of former glories and ancient regrets linger, a realm that is both a prison and a sanctuary for those who cannot move on.

The Inhabitants of Nülda: Nülda is inhabited by the valya who are trapped by their own past actions or allegiances. These beings, once divine, are now bound to The Pit, their light dimmed by their inability to embrace change. They are known as the Shades of the Past, and they wander Nülda, forever reliving their former lives and deeds.

The Landscape of Nülda: The landscape of Nülda is a reflection of Elissar’s history. Ruined castles, fallen monuments, and desolate battlefields mark its terrain. The skies are perpetually overcast, and a faint mist covers the ground, obscuring the paths that crisscross the realm. Time seems to stand still in Nülda, with every moment stretched into eternity.

The River of Remembrance: A river known as the Lethean Stream flows through Nülda. Its waters are said to hold the memories of all that has transpired in Elissar. Drinking from the river can grant visions of the past, but at the cost of becoming lost in one’s own memories, a fate that many of the Shades of the Past have suffered.

The Fortress of Regrets: At the center of Nülda stands the Fortress of Regrets, a massive structure built from the remnants of fallen empires. It is here that the ruler of Nülda, Moros, the Valya of Despair, resides. Moros is a tragic figure, once a valya of great renown, now reduced to overseeing the realm of lost hopes.

The Echoing Halls: Within the Fortress of Regrets are the Echoing Halls, where the whispers of the past can be heard. These halls are lined with mirrors that show not reflections, but scenes from history. It is said that the Echoing Halls hold the truth of every tale ever told in Elissar, but the truth comes with the risk of being consumed by the past.

Nülda is a realm that serves as a cautionary tale within the lore of Elissar. It is a reminder that while the past can offer valuable lessons, being trapped by it can lead to a stagnant existence. THE DREAMING

The Dreaming is a mystical realm that serves as a fey mirror of the material world. It is one of the unique aspects that sets Elissar apart from other medieval realms. The Dreaming, along with the Bleak Gate (the Wraith Mirror), can only be accessed through rare portals. The Dreaming reflects the material world but through a fey lens, imbued with magic and ethereal qualities. It’s a place where the elemental planes are not separate dimensions but concentrated locations of natural energy within the world itself, such as volcanoes, the depths of the sea, caverns, or the clouds in the sky.

The Dreaming is a testament to the rich tapestry of Elissar’s lore, where the fey and the material world intertwine, creating a realm of endless possibilities and wonder. It’s a world where the past, present, and future merge, and where the boundaries between the mundane and the magical are blurred. The Dreaming is not just a mirror; it’s a gateway to the heart of Elissar’s magic and mystery.

Elemental Planes and The Dreaming: Unlike other fantasy realms where elemental planes are separate dimensions, in Elissar, they are part of the world itself. Concentrated locations of natural energy, such as volcanoes, deep seas, caverns, and clouds, are the elemental planes within The Dreaming. This integration means that elementals are summoned directly from these natural sources, requiring conjurers to be in proximity to the respective elements.

Valya and The Dreaming: The valya, beings of divine essence, are said to have a connection with The Dreaming. In the ethereal tapestry of the Dreaming, the fey realm of Elissar, the twin moons of Lysara and Tenebria manifest in a more mystical and profound manner. The Dreaming is a place where the physical laws of the mortal world are gently unwoven by the threads of magic and imagination, allowing for a unique celestial display.

Lysara, in the Dreaming, doesn’t merely reflect light; it glows with an inner luminescence that paints the realm in a spectrum of iridescent hues. It is said that the light of Lysara in the Dreaming reveals the true essence of things, stripping away illusions and showing the heart of the feywild.

Tenebria, while still the Dark Sister, becomes a canvas for the dreams and nightmares of all beings. Its dark surface in the Dreaming is a swirling vortex of visions, reflecting not the light, but the hopes, fears, and stories of those who gaze upon it. It is a moon that sees into the soul, and many a traveler has been lost in its hypnotic depths, entranced by their own reflected desires or terrors.

The visibility of the moons in the Dreaming is not bound by the cycles of the mortal sky. They can appear full, new, or in any phase at any time, their appearance often linked to the prevailing emotions and events within the fey realm. During times of great fey celebrations or turmoil, both moons might be seen in the sky together, regardless of their phase in the mortal world.

THE BLEAK GATE

The Bleak Gate, also known as the Wraith Mirror, is a mysterious and somber realm within the cosmos of Elissar. It stands in stark contrast to The Dreaming, serving as its darker counterpart. Here’s what the lore reveals about the Bleak Gate:

The Essence of the Bleak Gate: The Bleak Gate is often referred to as the Wraith Mirror because it is a reflection of Elissar, much like The Dreaming, but with a more sinister and ghostly aspect. It is a realm that embodies the concept of purgatory, a place where spirits of the dead are said to linger before passing on to their final destination.

Access and Nature: Access to the Bleak Gate is as rare and guarded as The Dreaming, with portals existing only in hidden or protected locations. The Bleak Gate is envisioned as a hollow copy of the material world, lying just beneath the surface of Elissar. It is a place shrouded in mystery, where the dead pass through on their way to the afterlife.

Cultural Interpretations: Different cultures within Elissar have their own interpretations of the Bleak Gate. Some see it as a vision of the distant future, a world devoid of life, representing what Elissar will look like when all have perished. Others believe it lies on the dark side of the moon, a realm of shadows and echoes.

UNWORKED MAGIC

The cataclysms of Elissar’s ancient past have rent the fabric of arcana and divinity asunder a dozen times over, undoing much of the magic of previous ages.

Rare Conjuration Spells
Elissar’s unique planar nature makes the borders of the realms material extremely difficult to pierce and few know how to do so. The following spells are treated as rare spells in Elissar: conjure animals, conjure celestial, conjure elemental, conjure fey, conjure minor elementals, conjure woodland beings, gate, infernal weapon, planar ally. When you would gain one of these spells from a class feature or archetype, you learn a different spell instead (chosen by the Narrator).

Unexisting Enchantments
The following magic items must be crafted to exist in Elissar: armor of resistance (psychic), bag of devouring, bag of holding, bead of force, book of storing, cubic gate, handy haversack, helm of teleportation, ioun stone of agility, lantern of revealing, magic mirror (wall), mirror of life trapping, orb of elsewhere, portable hole, potion of clairvoyance, robe of stars, sack of sacks, talisman of the sphere, well of many worlds.

Unworked Spells
Astral projection and dream cannot be cast here, and a spellcaster must create the following spells to use them as they do not currently exist in Elissar: create food and water, demiplane, heart of Dis, magnificent mansion, maze, plane shift, rope trick, teleport, teleportation circle, tiny hut, word of recall.

VALYA

There is no distinction between the origins of angels, fiends, or gods. These are just mortal words used to try to describe the valya; they’re all splinters of Ulvatu, sparks from the flame, and categorized based on their allegiance and actions. Ulvatu is neither good nor evil.

There’s also not much by way of hierarchy, although some groups of valya do organize themselves: Ellmemog is the most powerful known valya, with fiendish legions under his command. He (and other very powerful valya) cannot enter the world and are trapped in Nülda or far, far away in Silyōna. Whether in the Pit or the Shining Lands, each valya is represented by a star twinkling in the night sky.

There are few valya wanderers on Elissar; some who are angels, and some, in the darkest places, who are demons. Sometimes demons take on beautiful forms and gain influence in the world. A wandering wizard might be a benevolent valya, a charismatic noble might be a power-hungry valya. Their identity as valya is obscure knowledge, often hidden.

WORSHIPPED VALYA

Here are a few Valya that are worshipped as gods in certain areas of Elissar.

Peregrine Pathlord

Origins: Peregrine is said to have emerged from the first path ever trodden by mortal feet. He was born of the desire to explore, the curiosity that drives one to see what lies beyond the horizon. As the Patron of the Perpetual Journey, he represents the unending quest for knowledge, experience, and self-discovery.

Domains: Peregrine’s domains encompass travel, choice, and destiny. He watches over all who travel for any purpose, be it trade, exploration, or pilgrimage. His guidance is sought at every crossroad, literal and metaphorical, where a decision must be made and a path chosen.

Symbols and Worship: Peregrine is often depicted as a wanderer with a wide-brimmed hat and a staff that points in multiple directions. His symbols are the compass and the crossroads, representing the guidance and choices that define a journey. Shrines to Peregrine are found at significant junctions and are adorned with offerings of shoes, maps, and compasses from those seeking his blessing on their travels.

Festivals and Rites: The most significant observance in his honor is the Festival of Paths, celebrated at the onset of the traveling season. It is a time when travelers of all kinds gather to exchange tales, maps, and wisdom. They seek Peregrine’s favor through the Rite of the Open Road, where they cast stones onto a map and let the pattern determine their next adventure.

Influence: Peregrine’s influence is felt in the restlessness of the heart, the yearning to roam, and the courage to face the unknown. He is believed to walk invisibly alongside travelers, offering subtle signs and omens to guide them on their way.

Legends: One of the most beloved legends of Peregrine tells of a young adventurer who stood at a crossroads, unable to choose a path. Peregrine appeared to the youth in the guise of an old traveler and walked with him, sharing stories of the wonders and perils of each road. By the journey’s end, the youth had found not only his path but also his purpose, and it is said that all who truly seek will find Peregrine at their side at the crossroads of their life.

Peregrine Pathlord’s lore is a celebration of the journey itself, not just the destination. He is the whisper in the heart that urges one to journey forth, the hand that guides at the crossroads, and the compass that points ever onward on the perpetual journey of life.
 



Thundarion

He emerged from the heart of the tempest, a deity of raw strength and indomitable will. His essence is intertwined with the primal forces of nature, embodying the unbridled fury of the skies.

Domains: The domains of Thundarion encompass strength, courage, and battle. He is the patron of warriors, blacksmiths, and all who seek to harness the power of the storm. His followers draw upon his might to face their battles, whether they be fought on the fields of war or within the forges of creation.

Symbols and Worship: Thundarion is often depicted wielding a hammer that crackles with lightning, his voice a thunderous roar that shakes the heavens. His symbols are the lightning bolt and the anvil, representing the destructive and creative forces of the storm. Temples dedicated to Thundarion are built to withstand the fiercest weather, and his altars are scorched with marks from ritual lightning strikes.

Festivals and Rites: The most revered festival in his honor is the Stormcall, a celebration that takes place during the most intense storms. His followers gather to chant and beat drums, their rhythm mimicking the heartbeat of the storm. The bravest among them perform the Rite of the Thunderstrike, where they seek to capture the essence of lightning within enchanted stones.

Influence: Thundarion’s influence is felt in the courage that rises in the face of adversity, the strength that surges in moments of need, and the resolve that hardens against the winds of fate. He is the spark that ignites the spirit of the warrior and the flame that forges the will of the artisan.

Legends: One legend speaks of a great hero who called upon Thundarion in the midst of battle. The sky responded with a cataclysmic storm, and Thundarion himself descended, his voice a thunderclap that rallied the hero’s faltering allies. With Thundarion’s power coursing through him, the hero turned the tide of war and secured victory.

Solethius

As the Radiant Beacon, he is the embodiment of the sun’s first rays, the light that dispels fear and uncertainty.

Domains: The domains of Solethius include light, wisdom, and guidance. He is the patron of those who seek truth, the lost seeking direction, and the oppressed seeking liberation. His followers are beacons in their own right, spreading his luminous teachings and striving to enlighten others.

His symbols are the sunburst and the lighthouse, representing the far-reaching light that guides and protects. Festivals and Rites: The most joyous celebration in his honor is the Festival of Lights, coinciding with the summer solstice when the day is longest. It is a time of jubilation, where his followers light candles and lanterns, symbolizing the light of Solethius reaching even the darkest places. The Rite of Illumination is performed, where seekers of truth walk a labyrinth lit by torches, meditating on the wisdom they wish to attain.

Influence: Solethius’s influence is felt in the pursuit of knowledge, the comfort of the lost, and the upliftment of the downtrodden. He is the spark of inspiration in the scholar, the guiding star for the sailor, and the comforting glow for the child afraid of the dark.

Legends: One legend recounts a time of great darkness when an eclipse shadowed Elissar for days. Solethius descended from the heavens, his brilliance outshining the obscured sun, and he battled the creatures of shadow that had emerged. When the eclipse passed, it was said that Solethius had left behind a fragment of his light in the sky, creating Lysara, the Luminous Sovereign, to ensure that such darkness would never fall unchallenged again.

Solethius’s lore is a testament to the power of light over darkness, wisdom over ignorance, and guidance over aimlessness. He is the Radiant Beacon, whose eternal light guides the inhabitants of Elissar towards a brighter future.

 



Justicar Veredictum

He came into being at the moment when the concept of law was born, emerging as the embodiment of order and the antithesis of anarchy. As the divine beacon of order, he represents the unyielding structure that underpins society.

Domains: The domains of Justicar Veredictum include justice, truth, and order. He is the patron of judges, lawmakers, and all who uphold the law. His followers seek his guidance to discern right from wrong and to administer justice without prejudice.

Symbols and Worship: Justicar Veredictum is often depicted as a stern figure, blindfolded to signify impartiality, with a great gavel in hand that resonates with the power of truth. His symbols are the scales of justice and the blindfold, representing fairness and objectivity. Temples dedicated to him are designed as courts of law, where disputes are settled and oaths are sworn.

Festivals and Rites: The most solemn observance in his honor is the Day of Adjudication, a day when the people of Elissar reflect on their deeds and seek to right any wrongs they have committed. It is a time when the law is reaffirmed, and the Rite of the Just Word is performed, where individuals confess their transgressions and pledge to uphold the truth.

Influence: Justicar Veredictum’s influence is felt in the order that governs society, the integrity of the courts, and the unwavering pursuit of truth. He is the conscience in the judge, the resolve in the guardian, and the certainty in the heart of the just.

Legends: One legend tells of a great city plagued by corruption. Justicar Veredictum descended upon the city, his gavel striking with such force that it shattered the chains of deceit. He then bestowed upon the people a set of laws inscribed in stone, which brought prosperity and harmony to the city for generations to come.

Justicar Veredictum’s lore is a testament to the enduring power of law and the relentless pursuit of justice. He is the Gavel of Truth, whose resounding verdicts echo through the annals of Elissar, ensuring that order prevails in a land of myth and magic.

 



Mortallis Arcanique

Mortallis Arcanique, the Sovereign of Mysteries, reigns over the enigmatic realms of magic and the inevitable end that is death in the pantheon of Elissar. Her lore is a profound narrative that weaves the arcane with the absolute, the mystical with the mortal.

Origins: Mortallis Arcanique is said to have emerged from the void at the beginning of time, a deity born from the convergence of life’s greatest enigma and its ultimate certainty: magic and death. Valya often have domains and the more powerful ones can grant miracles to their followers (manifestations of divine magic). Sometimes a cleric might not be worshiping the valya they thought they were; there are evil valya who can be deceitful that way and trick followers as to their true nature.

The valya on Elissar are the weakest of their kind; to be on Elissar diminishes their power. A valya cannot grant spells to their followers while on Elissar.
